This document summarizes a talk given by Chris Heilmann calling on JavaScript developers to focus less on impressing each other and more on building. It discusses how developers prioritize convenience over user experience by using complex frameworks they don't understand to solve problems that don't exist. It encourages developers to embrace new JavaScript features like ES6, simplify their code, and focus on performance and the needs of all users.
Fixing security by fixing software developmentNick Galbreath
Fixing Security by Fixing Software Development Using Continuous Deployment
Do you have an effective release cycle? Is your process long and archaic? Long release cycle are typically based on assumptions we haven't seen since the 1980s and require very mature organizations to implement successfully. They can also disenfranchise developers from caring or even knowing about security or operational issues. Attend this session to learn more about an alternative approach to managing deployments through Continuous Deployment, otherwise known as Continuous Delivery. Find out how small, but frequent changes to the production environment can transform an organization’s development process to truly integrate security. Learn how to get started with continuous deployment and what tools and process are needed to make implementation within your organization a (security) success.
In the last year or so things changed drastically. Everybody uses an iPhone6, is connected 24/7 at high-speed without data caps, is healthy, has shiny teeth and loves spending money on your products. All you need to do is constantly innovate and you'll be a major success. The term for this is "the modern web". Another word for it is nonsense. There is a web people want and there is one that people use. We should start thinking about upgrading the one people use and stop chasing our own tail trying to mimick other environments.

The Web moves fast, really fast. No one talks about what version of a web site you are using. Maybe you are using the beta version. Even then, it is always new. The Web is obsessed with new. It thrives on new. To meet this demand, in the early years of the web, teams learned a new way to deploy their software. Rather than the traditional models used by compiled, installed software, these pioneers on the Internet deployed software when it was ready. That meant Web sites could be responsive to changes, fix bugs quickly, and add new features to compete with the market. This method is still alive today. Successful web companies still do this to keep their advantage. While there are no set rules, there are good examples of what others do and how it helps them be successful.

Do you know your users? Are your users engaged in the development of their business application? Do they enjoy working with your application? Developing a complex information system is a challenge for any development team. System architects and developers often prefer to concentrate on technology, data model and business logic, in the process neglecting the user interface. They forget that user interface is the only part of your information system that users see, and often the most important metric of usability and quality. High-quality user interface is not just a matter ofengineering, but also of social skills and life and business experience of developers. Make your customers happy!

We’re entering a new era where an increasing number of devices with wildly divergent features -- including phones, tablets, game consoles, and TVs -- are connected to the Internet. As the way people access the Internet changes, there is an urgent need to rethink how we use the web to communicate. This doesn't mean creating separate solutions for each device but rather preparing our existing content to meet this increasingly unpredictable future. Dave Olsen and Doug Gapinski will share and examine examples that show how responsive design will help institutions rethink and adjust for the future-friendly web.
Primary topics that are covered are: understanding the reality of web development today, example RWD design patterns, and understanding how to test and optimize the performance of your RWD website.

We can be brilliant developers, but we won’t succeed—and won’t lead our organizations to succeed—without a new perspective (if you will) and new assumptions about the components of the “technology ecosystem” that are fundamentally critical to our success. This includes the operators, QA team, DBAs, security folks, and even the pure business contingent—in most cases, each of these individuals and groups plays a critical role in the success of what we create and give birth to as developers. What we do in isolation might be genius, but if we insulate ourselves—especially with arrogance—from these colleagues, neither our code nor our organizations will realize their full potential, and most will fail. The bottom line is that our old ways are no longer viable, and as the elite within our industry, we will be the leaders and heroes who discard old assumptions and adopt a new perspective in this exciting journey to digital transformation—where the impossible can become reality.

This session aims to address this, and, using lessons learned from several real-world examples, it covers topics such when to rewrite applications (if at all), modeling/extracting business domains, applying the “application strangler” pattern, common misconceptions with “12-factor” application design, and the benefits/drawbacks of container technology.

First Steps with Globus Compute Multi-User EndpointsGlobus
In this presentation we will share our experiences around getting started with the Globus Compute multi-user endpoint. Working with the Pharmacology group at the University of Auckland, we have previously written an application using Globus Compute that can offload computationally expensive steps in the researcher's workflows, which they wish to manage from their familiar Windows environments, onto the NeSI (New Zealand eScience Infrastructure) cluster. Some of the challenges we have encountered were that each researcher had to set up and manage their own single-user globus compute endpoint and that the workloads had varying resource requirements (CPUs, memory and wall time) between different runs. We hope that the multi-user endpoint will help to address these challenges and share an update on our progress here.

A call to JS Developers - Let’s stop trying to impress each other and start building
1. Call to JavaScript developers:
Let’s stop trying to impress each other and start building
Chris Heilmann @codepo8, Web on the Edge, Helsinki, Nov 2015
11. BROWSER DO AN
INCREDIBLE AMOUNT
OF WORK FOR US…
• Display of all kind of media content
• Fix minor mistakes in our code
• Optimise our code to run smoothly
• Provide us with developer tools
• Provide us with deep insights what
our code does to the computer
• Allow us to automate testing in
them and debug remotely on
devices we don’t even own (using
3rd party services)
12. So how come we
made the web all

13. CONVENIENCE
BREEDS MORE
CONVENIENCE
• Browsers aren’t good enough
• Development environments are not
predictive and do our work for us
• Languages are confusing
• We should have to write less code

Instead of celebrating how lucky
we are, we complain…

INTEREST IN SPENDING MONEY ON THE WEB FOR WEB SERVICES…
19. THE WEB IS AN
AMAZING IDEA AND
OFFER…
• Access to information world-wide,
24⨉7
• Independent of hardware, software,
ability, or geographical location
• A read/write medium, everybody is
invited to become a creator and not
just a consumer
20. ONE PERSON’S
BEAUTY IS ANOTHER
ONE’S WORRY…
• It is hard to build software and
interfaces for the unknown
• Open distribution, caching and
availability of source code is
anathema to content providers
wanting to protect their content.

23. AS DEVELOPERS, WE
ARE ASKED TO DO
THE IMPOSSIBLE…
• Make it work the same in every
browser
• Make it easy to maintain and we
want to control everything
• Make sure it is also accessible - I
think there’s a law we need to
follow
• Don’t spent too much time on it -
let’s release it now and fix it later!
• Use this analytics code you have
no clue about - we need to know
how people use our products
24. THE ANSWER IS
ALWAYS JAVASCRIPT
• Javascript is too powerful for its
own good.
• Almost everything that goes
wrong can be controlled and to
a degree fixed with JavaScript
• This leads to people relying on
libraries and frameworks

• Analyse the speed of your products
and improve it by simplifying them:
webpagetest.org
• Stop trying to guess what browser is
in use and assume unknown
browsers to be good, not terrible.
• Keep up to date with what browsers
can do: caniuse.com and use it!
• File bugs, report issues, talk to us!
93. JAVASCRIPT IS STILL THE

VERSATILE AND
INVITING LANGUAGE
OUT THERE…
