Open Ethernet: an open-source approach to modern network designAlexander Petrovskiy
The era of closed proprietary hardware platforms is coming to an end. Today, in the world of Web-scale IT, the industry is starting to adopt new approach, based on the principles of openness, scalabilty and customizability. However, in more conservative networking industry, traditional equipment and proprietary technologies from a single vendor are often being used, which limits the flexibility, prevents innovation and narrows down the choice.
The "Open Ethernet" initiative from Mellanox brings open source principles into the world of modern networking and allows customers to select the best hardware and software to design network infrastructure, based on open and standard protocols and technologies, also opening the way for broad adoption of SDN.
We will also discuss optimizations for MPI collectives communications, that are frequently used for processes synchronization and show how their performance is critical for scalable, high-performance applications.

Learning from ZFS to Scale Storage on and under Containersinside-BigData.com
Evan Powell presented this deck at the MSST 2107 Mass Storage Conference.
"What is so new about the container environment that a new class of storage software is emerging to address these use cases? And can container orchestration systems themselves be part of the solution? As is often the case in storage, metadata matters here. We are implementing in the open source OpenEBS.io some approaches that are in some regards inspired by ZFS to enable much more efficient scale out block storage for containers that itself is containerized. The goal is to enable storage to be treated in many regards as just another application while, of course, also providing storage services to stateful applications in the environment."

RoCEv2 is an extension of the original RoCE specification announced in 2010 that brought the benefits of Remote Direct Memory Access (RDMA) I/O architecture to Ethernet-based networks. RoCEv2 addresses the needs of today’s evolving enterprise data centers by enabling routing across Layer 3 networks. Extending RoCE to allow Layer 3 routing provides better traffic isolation and enables hyperscale data center deployments.

Content Delivery Networks (CDN) play a critical role in optimizing network bandwidth resources and improving content delivery performance. This session covers the architecture of a content distribution service with emphasis on the where and how content origination occurs, methods of distribution, and the impact on network resources. Key principles are highlighted that enable you to maximize the value of a CDN. These caching principles are applicable to any CDN technology whether deployed by the content provider, content aggregator, content distributor, or content consumer. Content delivery architectures are evaluated on how well they serve different content types including Adaptive Bit Rate video such as Apple's HTTP Live Streaming, Microsoft's HTTP Smooth Streaming, and DASH methods. Attention is focused on dimensioning the resources (e.g. cloud compute, storage, and network capacity) to enable efficient content distribution and CDN component optimization. Cisco's Open Media Distribution is used as a reference implementation in the presentation to describe and illustrate these principles.

Advanced Networking: The Critical Path for HPC, Cloud, Machine Learning and moreinside-BigData.com
In this deck from the 2018 Swiss HPC Conference, Erez Cohen from Mellanox presents: Advanced Networking: The Critical Path for HPC, Cloud, Machine Learning and more.
"While InfiniBand, RDMA and GPU-Direct are an HPC mainstay, these advanced networking technologies are increasingly becoming a core differentiator to the data center. In fact, within just a few short years so far, where only a handful of bleeding edge industrial leaders emulated classic HPC disciplines, today almost every commercial market is usurping HPC technologies and disciplines in mass. Additionally, with the rampant adoption of demanding workloads like Machine Learning, cloud to on premise providers are now deploying the same advanced networking technologies and delivering the same core capabilities and performance as traditional HPC environments. These same data centers embracing AI are also driving the increased adoption of complex technologies including containers and virtualization that must also be optimized for performance, optimal profit and operational efficiency. In this talk we explore how high performance networking has emerged from HPC to become the critical path for the cloud, machine learning and much more."

"Impact of front-end architecture on development cost", Viktor TurskyiFwdays
I have heard many times that architecture is not important for the front-end. Also, many times I have seen how developers implement features on the front-end just following the standard rules for a framework and think that this is enough to successfully launch the project, and then the project fails. How to prevent this and what approach to choose? I have launched dozens of complex projects and during the talk we will analyze which approaches have worked for me and which have not.
