MobiMESH Network Architecture

                                • Backbone:
                                  wireless
                                  multihop
                                  infrastructure
                                • Access:
                                  appears as a
                                  WLAN to clients
                                • Wired
                                  Backbone
                                  integration
Access Network
• Any Wi-Fi (IEEE 802.11) client can access the network
• The Access Network is perceived by clients as a standard
  Wi-Fi network
• The Access network can work in the 2.4 Ghz, 4.9 Ghz and
5 Ghz frequency band, at admin's choice
Access Network (2)

• All security protocols for access networks are supported:
   – WEP
   – WPA/WPA2 (PSK, EAP-TLS, EAP-TTLS, EAP-PEAP...)
   – MAC ACL
   – VPN
• RADIUS integration for Authentication, Authorization and
  Accounting (AAA)
• Captive Portal support for Hot-Spots
MobiMESH Backbone

• MobiMESH Backbone constitutes the wireless distribution
  system
• Multi-radio, Multi-hop network
• A real, layer 3 network
• Main tasks:
   – Transport access traffic
   – Signalling
   – Mobility Management
• Radio-Aware Routing Protocol
MobiMESH Radio-Aware Routing Protocol

• Protocol Features:
   – Multi-channel: interference aware
   – Aware of the physical rate of the link
• The Idea: Avoid using the same frequency in and out the
  same node
• More interfaces (and frequencies) on a node -> less
  interference
• Most producers (Cisco, Tropos, …) still developing it!!
Single Radio Vs Multi Radio

• Single Interface: half duplex link, low throughput

• Multiple interfaces: contemporary transmission and
  reception, high throughput
Real Mesh Vs Bridged Networks

        REAL MESH BRIDGED NETWORKS

• Layer 3 • Layer 2
• Routing protocol: • Single IP network:
   – Optimization – No routing, only
     mechanisms broadcasting
   – Failure recovery – Bandwidth loss
• More Scalable – Manual and slow failure
                              recovery (if any)
• Easy management
MobiMESH Backbone Security

• Router Authentication
   – MobiMESH Routers are authenticated through digital
     certificates
   – No attacker node can enter the Backbone Network

• Traffic Encryption
   – Both data traffic and signalling is encrypted
   – Ciphering with time-changing key
MobiMESH Mobility Management
• Access terminals are tracked and their position is known to
  the Backbone network
• Once a terminal changes access point, traffic is routed to
  the new location
• Active connections are not lost!
   – Max Handover time is
     around 100ms
   – Best performance on the
     market!
MobiMESH Management System

• The MobiMESH Network is managed
  through the MobiMESH Management
  System (MMMS)
• Main tasks:
   – Network configuration
   – Configuration provisioning
   – Network management
   – Network monitoring
MMMS: Network Configuration

                    • Every parameter on the node can
                      be configured on the MMMS
                    • Every wireless interface can be
configured as a backbone or as
                      an access interface
                    • Every interface can work on both
                      2.4 GHz and 5GHz frequencies
MMMS: Configuration Provisioning

• The MobiMESH network is self configuring
• It automatically creates the desired configuration
• When a node is powered on:
   – It tries to find the MobiMESH network
   – It contacts the MMMS and it retrieves its configuration
   – It applies the configuration
   – It joins the network
MMMS: Network Management and Monitoring
• The Network can be managed and monitored through the
  integrated map
• Some administration tools are provided:
   – Backbone Link Status
   – Connected Clients list
   – SNMP Echo test
   – SSH Console
   – Watchdog
   – Node Recovery Mode
MobiMESH Installation
• MobiMESH Installation is an easy
  task
• When the node is placed on the
  poles, the Positioning
  Interface helps pointing
  antennas
MobiMESH Installation (2)

                      • Once MobiMESH Routers are
                        installed and powered on, the
                        network comes up
                        automatically
                      • If any configuration mistake has
                        been made, the watchdog
rescues the node: no need of
                        on-site intervention
                      • Remote management
