9 Ways to Develop Personal Power
Key points from the Hangout with Filipe Carrera, Peter Milligan, & Sofie Sandell on 30th September 2016.
1) Develop a Manageable Lifestyle.
Living a good life and being a good leader for yourself and your family is about love and boundaries. I
have a friend who reminds me to make things easy and manageable. I can make things more complex
than they need be so it’s work in progress. One source of inspiration is the philosophy of LEAN from
Toyota. I read the book Lean@Home, and use some tips from it in life. http://lean-at-home.com/en/. [SS]
2) Fully Recognise that Your Power Starts with You.
This might seem obvious, but many of us can make the mistake of thinking that our power comes from
external factors such as our employer, job title, qualifications, and bank account. Those things can be
useful, but a person’s true personal power would be revealed if all those things were taken away. Roger
Hamilton said something similar: “Your wealth is what you have when you lose all your money.”. [PM]
3) Power Comes from Sharing.
Retaining information was once a source of power, but the world has changed, now when you share your
experience and your knowledge you get back more knowledge and with that more power. [FC]
4) Maintain a Sense of Coherence.
You make better decisions for yourself if you have a sense of purpose and connection. I loved listening
to an interview with a teacher who mentioned Aaron Antonovsky, an Israeli-American sociologist. His
theory is that the sense of coherence helps you cope better in life. In short, it is about a sense of
comprehensibility, a sense of manageability and a sense of meaningfulness. If these factors are there,
we are able to cope better with stress and other crap that life throws at us. [SS]
5) Recognise that Personal Power is Amplified through Connection.
Most success in life will involve working with, and helping, other people in some way. Therefore,
personal power comes from knowing how to connect quickly with others and build trust. Connection is
built through authenticity, a healthy acceptance of the strengths and weaknesses in yourself and others.
It is NOT built by trying to impress upon people how clever, powerful or perfect you are. [PM]
6) Help others to excel, and they will empower you.
We are living in a collective race, when we help others to excel themselves, you get recognition, doors
open naturally and you create your own meaningful story. [FC]
7) Are You a Puppy or a Shark?
Evaluate yourself, and see if you are bringing unhealthy behaviours into your relationships. Are you
always scarifying yourself and acting like the happy and grateful puppy? Or do you have tendencies of
being a shark who always wants more attention and love? [SS]
8) See Life as Play and Discovery.
When we take life too seriously, we have too much of an attachment to events and people being exactly the
way we think they “should” be. Judgement rather than acceptance impedes flow. Instead of overreacting,
choose to respond calmly in the present and find the best way forward in any situation. Whatever the
challenge, you’ll will gain some useful experience and have some valuable lessons to share! [PM]
9) Everybody Wants to be a Shareholder of Success.
We are all interconnected and everybody likes to have a social medal of being a shareholder in
(contributor to) somebody else’s success. Never forget the power of a good network which can be a
pass to your success and, in consequence, more power.. [FC]
