We are hearing much about the importance of strong and stable leadership. But do you need the job title 'leader' to be a leader to those around you? These 12 ideas will help you step up and be the best of yourself, always.
2. AND…
The dictionary definition also defines
superheroes as people who are
exceptionally skilful or successful.
In this short SlideShare we challenge
you to step up to be the best possible
version of you. You, with your own
superpower to change things for the
better for you; and those around you.
Superheroes are depicted in films and comics
as regular people who transform, when
needed, into characters with superhuman
powers.
4. Whatever role you are
in you can lead.
You can be the person
who shapes things for
the better for you, your
colleagues and your
customers.
What does it
take to be a
leader?
There are 3 key traits
that we believe
demonstrate personal
leadership.
5. So will you commit to being the best you can be?
If so use our tips on the next few pages to help build your

6. Let’s start with Authenticity
According to Bill George, Professor of
Management Practices at Harvard Business
School, authenticity over the last decade has
become the gold standard of leadership.
Authentic Leadership was intended as a clarion
call to the new generation to learn from
negative examples like Enron, WorldCom and
Tyco.
Yet trust in authority is at an all time low
according to the Endelman Trust Report
https://www.edelman.co.uk/magazine/post
s/edelman-trust-barometer-2017-uk-
findings/
It is up to each and every one of us to lead
by example to effect a change (whether we
are in a formal leadership position or not!)
7. Authenticity:Ways to Practice
Be self-aware critically
review yourself in situations
As you meet new people, attend
meetings, focus on your work
think about:
• How do you feel?
• When are you at your best?
• When do you feel most
comfortable?
• What is distracting you? Why?
• How effective are you?
8. Authenticity:Ways to Practice
Look for role models
around you and notice
what you respect about
them
Consider what it is they do
that you respect and work
out how to build that into
your approach.
Have a conversation with
them – find out what makes
them tick and what drives
them.
9. Authenticity:Ways to Practice
Find genuine connections
and start by giving
People hide behind their desks,
busying themselves with their
work; just getting on with it.
They go to networking and
stand on the side ‘judging’
others. You will only find
genuine connections by
putting yourself out there and
being genuinely interested in
others.
The more connections you
develop the stronger your
network of resources to draw
on to support your growth
10. Authenticity:Ways to Practice
Be present
We have so much
going on it can be
difficult to focus
whole-heartedly on
someone or
something.
Practice.
There is nothing more
genuine that really
giving people your
presence!
11. Now on to Integrity
Integrity is about living your values and acting ethically and with
morals.
Jon Huntsman Snr (a multi-
billionaire) says that integrity is the
reason that he has been as
successful as he is.
“There are no moral shortcuts in
the game of business or life,” he
writes. “There are, basically, three
kinds of people, the unsuccessful,
the temporarily successful, and
those who become and remain
successful. The difference is
character.”
12. Integrity:Ways to practice
Under promise and
over deliver
Have this as your mantra.
It will stop you making
commitments that you
can’t keep.
Always do what you say
you’re going to do when
you are going to do it.
Show people they can rely
on you and when you miss
apologise and really
consider what stopped you
so you can avoid it
happening again.
13. Integrity:Ways to practice
Focus on outcome
It’s easy to get caught up in the
process and being a perfectionist
– it can be good to feel that you
have tweaked something to make
it look good but was that extra bit
really necessary and what as the
knock on effect? Keep an eye on
the prize and work diligently
towards it step by step. When the
going gets tough focus on the
great feelings you can have when
its finished – how will it make you
feel/ how will it make others feel?
14. Integrity:Ways to practice
Provide reassurance
Communicate with others
who are depending on you
frequently; don’t leave
anything to chance; make
sure they know they can
depend on you
15. Integrity:Ways to practice
Focus on solutions
not problems
Be the person who
recognises when things have
gone wrong (or are about to)
and focus on how to solve it.
Be helpful and guiding to
others to help them put
things right too.
16. And finally Drive
Most of us believe that the best
way to motivate ourselves and
others is with external rewards
like money—the carrot-and-stick
approach. That’s a mistake,
Daniel H. Pink says in, ‘Drive: The
Surprising Truth About What
Motivates Us’, the secret to high
performance and satisfaction is
the deeply human need to direct
our own lives, to learn and create
new things, and to do better by
ourselves and our world.
17. Drive:Ways to practice
Focus on your purpose
Dig deep and find a big
audacious why.
Work out what the value is to
you or others for doing what
you are doing and really build
this in your mind so you not
only THINK the value of your
efforts but you FEEL them too.
Recognise that you can always
do better. Always seek out
ways to improve and enrich
what you do and the lives of
those around you
18. Look for the fun in
things
Much of work is repetitive and
can be boring. When you seek
out ways to have fun with it, it
can provide an inner impetus
that really get’s you going.
Take this blog for instance it
just evolved and I have learnt
so much myself from doing it
that I’m excited about my own
self-improvement!

19. Have an elephant party.
You’ve all heard the saying the saying ‘the way to eat an
elephant is one bite at a time’ but does this really work?
Our brains are parallel processes
capable of processing different
stimuli at the same time so why not
have a party with it instead.
• Chunk it up,
• invite others to help you,
• Put on some music and have a
ball with it.
If others can’t help then do it
yourself. Chunk up the elephant and
play with several chunks.. and in
doing so one chunk will help you
with another as it will trigger ideas.

20. Get a cheerleader
We all need support so
reach out to a family
member, friend or
colleague; tell them what
you want to achieve and
ask them to help you do
so.

• Identify one thing each week
you are going to focus on and
use it to plan everything you
do.
• Remember it takes a while to
change a habit so you need to
really focus on it.
My first focus is point 5 so you
