This document defines and provides examples of the eight parts of speech in English: nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions, and interjections. Nouns name people, places, things, or ideas. Pronouns take the place of nouns. Verbs indicate actions or states of being. Adjectives provide additional information about nouns. Adverbs similarly modify verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs. Prepositions show relationships between nouns or pronouns and other words in a sentence. Conjunctions join words and sentences. Interjections are emotional words that end with an exclamation point.
