Summary Of Allegory Of Desolation In The Devil s Highway
Luís Alberto Urrea uses the allegory of desolation in the book The Devils Highway, A True Story to
illustrate life as well as death on the Devils Highway in the border region. The book accomplishes this
through his usage of the word. The word desolation is defined as a state of complete emptiness or
destruction. Often, the word does not appear, when this is the case, the illustration shifts to life.
Morton W. Bloomfield described allegory by stating that it allows for the significance of a work to go
beyond its meaning. The significance of that meaning is what may be called allegory. (Bloomfield,
1972) Desolation s meaning spans much more than its definition in The Devils Highway, A True Story.
It can on different meanings, it is not limited to the definition. Desolation and Cosmos define
Desolation stating, Desolation does not stand in isolation, but as a complex pattern. (Geyer, 1999) The
allegory of Desolation is ones demise in the desert on the Devils Highway.
In the author s note, Luís Albreto Urrea ends with the statement: But no story about death and the
Devil s Highway could rightly exist without the strong presence of Desolation, in all its intimidating
glory. (Urrea ) Urrea has directly indicated to us that there is no possible way that a story about death
could be without desolation. The two are synonymous. Where one is the other must follow. Urrea
makes this well known early on in the book by cluing the reader into the relationship that the two
share.

Jd Salinger Essay
Salinger, J(erome) D(avid) (1919 ), American novelist and short story writer, known for his stories
dealing with the intellectual and emotional struggles of adolescents who are alienated from the empty,
materialistic world of their parents. Salinger s work is marked by a profound sense of craftsmanship, a
keen ear for dialogue, and a deep awareness of the frustrations of life in America after World War II
(1939 1945).
Jerome David Salinger was born and raised in New York City. He began writing fiction as a teenager.
After graduating from the Valley Forge Military Academy in 1936, he began studies at several
colleges in the New York City area, but he took no degree. He did, however, take a fiction writing
class with Whit Burnett, an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the early 1960s, Salinger virtually stopped writing for publication and disappeared from public
view into his rural New Hampshire home. In an interview that he granted during the 1970s, Salinger
maintained that he continues to write daily, and has merely rejected publication as quot;a terrible
invasion of his privacy. quot; Salinger s reclusiveness added to his cult status.

The Catcher in the Rye is narrated by Holden Caulfield, a 16 year old boy who has just flunked out of
his third private boarding school. Unwilling to remain at school until the end of the term, Holden runs
away to New York City. He does not contact his parents, who live there, but instead drifts around the
city for two days. The bulk of the novel is an account, at once hilariously funny and tragically moving,
of Holden s adventures in Manhattan. These include disillusioning encounters with two nuns, a suave
ex schoolmate, a prostitute named Sunny, and a sympathetic former teacher who may be homosexual.
Finally, drawn by his affection for his ten year old sister, Phoebe, Holden abandons his spree and
returns home.
Salinger s depiction of Holden Caulfield is considered one of the most convincing portrayals of an
adolescent in literature. Intelligent, sensitive, and imaginative, Holden desires acceptance into the
adult world even though he is sickened and obsessed by what he regards as its quot;phonies, quot;
including his teachers, parents, and his older

REFRACTING CHIMAMANDA NGOZI ADICHIE S AMERICANAH THROUGH A POST
COLONIAL PRISM
1. Introduction
Respected Marxist critic Frederic Jameson once described every instance of third world literature as
necessarily nationally allegorical (69), an assertion spectacularly assailed by Aijaz Ahmad (77 82).
But it is possible to close our eyes to Ahmad s very valid misgivings and take a bird s eye view of
Jameson s assertion: read in reaction to the phenomenon of imperialism, perhaps the literature of
dominated peoples is the literature of self assertion, however blind to Jameson s national allegorical
(or anticolonial) imperative, and however hybrid . That last expression might as ... Show more content

But first, I must situate Americanah in its post colonial moment.
2. Situating Americanah in the Post Colonial Moment
Since it is published in 2013, the material reality of Americanah is conditioned, however distantly it
seems now, by the phenomenon of colonialism it is written in English, for instance. Although
published in 2013, the temporality and spatiality of Americanah s narrative extends backwards to the
late 70s when its major protagonist, Ifemelu, was born. As a child, she witnesses the death by firing
squad of that famous robbery kingpin, Lawrence Anini (148), and lives through coups, coups attempts,
strikes and the usual brand of public dysfunction that still haunts Nigeria, therefore linking its post
coloniality with that decidedly African brand of introverted, introspective post independence post
coloniality of disillusionment exemplified by novels such as Ayi Kwei Armah s The Beautyful Ones
Are Not Yet Born, Chinua Achebe s No Longer at Ease and Anthills of the Savannah, and soon enough
with the post coloniality of globalization (and the neoliberal ideology that has hijacked it). As we see
in the novel, this disillusionment is the animus of her exile. Ifemelu arrives America in 1997, the year
in which Kudirat Abiola, activist wife of M.K.O Abiola, was killed (116). Here, Americanah s post
coloniality takes a new turn. This new turn, inaugurated by Ifemelu s (voluntary

The Most Complex Organs Of The Human Body
The eye is one of the most complex organs of the human body. In the human eye, three layers can be
distinguished.
The outer region consists of the cornea and the sclera [4]. The cornea refracts and transmits the light
to the lens and the retina and protects the eye against infection and structural damage to the deeper
parts. The sclera is a thick, opaque white tissue that covers 95% of the surface area of the eye. The
sclera forms a connective tissue coat that protects the eye from internal and external forces and
maintains its shape. The cornea and the sclera are connected at the limbus. The visible part of the
sclera is covered by a transparent mucous membrane, the conjunctiva.
The middle layer of the eye is composed of the iris, the ciliary body ... Show more content on

The iris controls the size of the pupil, and thus the amount of light reaching the retina; the ciliary body
controls the power and shape of the lens and is the site of aqueous production; and the choroid is a
vascular layer that provides oxygen and nutrients to the outer retinal layers.
The inner layer of the eye is the retina [4], a complex, layered structure of neurons that capture and
process light. The surrounding sclera and cornea help to protect retina and keep it in the appropriate
position.
There are six major classes in neural retina: photoreceptors, bipolar cells, horizontal cells, amacrine
cells and ganglion cells, which capture and process light signals; and the Mullerian glia, which act as
the organizational backbone of the neural retina.
The three transparent structures surrounded by the ocular layers are called the aqueous, the vitreous

Substitution And Elimination Reaction Lab Report
Substitution and Elimination Reactions Substitution reactions replace a functional group with a new
group. These reactions compete with elimination reactions in which a group is eliminated and a π (pi)
bond is formed. Substitution reactions occur when a nucleophile is added to an electrophile/substrate.
Elimination reactions occur when a base is added to an electrophile/substrate. The electrophile must
contain a leaving group to be considered a substrate. Alkyl Halides Alkyl Halides are the common
substrate used in substitution and elimination reactions. Alkyl Halides are halogen containing alkane
compounds. These compounds are commonly used as the electrophile in substitution reactions.
Naming Alkyl Halides is similar to naming alkanes. Halogen substituents are named just like alkane
substituents, for example if there is a chlorine attached to an ethane the chlorine substituent will be
named using the word chloro . The other halogens are named using the words flouro , bromo , and
iodo respectively. These possible substituents are listed alphabetically along with the alkane
substituents. When dealing with alkyl halides it is important to note that the carbons attached to the
halogens and the carbons attached to those carbons are involved in the reaction process, therefore we
designate these carbons with special symbols to differentiate them from the rest of the molecule. The
carbon atom that is bonded to the halogen is designated the α (alpha) carbon. The carbons that are

Impact Of Napoleon On The French Revolution
From conquering most of Europe in the early 19th century, to crowning himself emperor in 1804,
Napoleon Bonaparte was a very important figure in history. Not only did he do these things, but many
more in his lifetime. For Instance, the making of the Napoleonic Code . Although there were these
great events, Napoleon also witnessed a very significant downfall which eventually led to his death.
Napoleon has definitely had an influence in the French Revolution and on the people during the

First, in the Summer of 1812, Napoleon led a massive army into Russia. Instead of Russia engaging in
a full battle, whenever the French army attempted to attack, the Russians retreated. While the French

were deprived of supplies. After a month of waiting for a surrender which never came, Napoleon and
the French army had to face the Russian winter in which resulted in the Russian army later harassing

John Rawls s Theory Of Justice
If we could invent a time traveling machine and go back in time there are decisions and events that we
would go through great lengths to try to reverse or change the outcome of in the future. We might
decide to not take a specific date to the prom, stay with the one that got away, or work on our jump
shot a little more. But what would we do if we could put a video game reset on our society as a whole?
John Rawls proposed a similar question in his theory of the original position in A Theory of Justice. In
Rawls original position, he asks individuals to decide which laws and principles would work in the
best interest of society as a whole if we were to have a sort of fresh start (Shaw Barry, 2016). This
theory and other theories proposed by Rawls encourage individuals to make objective decisions in
business and in everyday life that allow for cooperative efforts to take place and for positive changes
to be made within society.
Why is this? Under the original position we would all choose a society that held fundamental liberties
for everyone and would hold that inequalities only be allowed if they would benefit the least fortunate
(Shaw Barry, 2016). This sounds too good to be true, as many people have conflicting interests and
beliefs that would prevent them from this sort of reasoning, you might say. Rawls, however, also asks
that people remove their individual biases, status, gender, etc. or use a veil of ignorance when
assessing their idealized fundamental principles.

Business Cycle Essay
In everyday society, companies are affected by the economy. The company either suffers or benefits
depending on what kind of economy it is. This will depend on what kind of company it is, and what
kind of market the business does well in. The Business Cycle is what determines this factor. It is a
term used in economics to designate changes in the economy.
Timing of the business cycle is not predictable, but its phases seem to be. Many economists site four
phases prosperity, liquidation, depression, and recovery. During a period of prosperity, a rise in
production leads to increases in employment, wages, and profits. Obstacles then begin to obstruct
further expansion. Production costs can increase, helping create a rise in prices, and ... Show more

The Secret Truth About Napping Analysis
Sometimes I think that sleeping isn t important because I thought that sleep wouldn t help your body.
Well I was wrong to say that because it does help your body. The amount of sleep you get each day
impacts over the course of your life. I was asked if sleep had a huge impact on your health. Well my
answer is yes it does have a huge impact. Some people don t have enough hours of sleep, some have
too much, and some don t know how much their suppose to sleep. Despite the fact that some people
think that sleep isn t important, I m going to prove that sleep is important According to Source 1, if
you routinely lose sleep or choose to sleep less then needed, the sleep loss will add up. The total sleep
loss is like your sleep debt. For example, if you lose 2 hours of sleep each night, you ll have a sleep
debt f 14 hours after a week. Some people night take naps as a way to deal with sleepiness. Naps can

renew a person s energy. For example, if the brilliant scientist Albert Einstein didn t take naps he
would ve never had invented the light bulb. If the amazing artist Leonardo Da Vinci didn t take naps,
eh would ve been too sleepy to paint the Mona Lisa. The human body operates according to the

Apollo Vs Artemis Essay
Greek mythology is a subject that has fascinated humans for millennia, that has inspired numerous
books and movies alike. While the family tree of the Gods is a huge, and slightly confusing article of
notice, full of many characters, both monstrous and beatific, two siblings are worth noting more so
than others. Apollo and Artemis, twin siblings of the moon and sun, patron of archers, have been a
subject of fascination for historians and mythology fans alike. These siblings have been known as both
ruthless and fair on many occasions in Greek literature and are believed by some to be the most

As stated earlier, Artemis became an eternal maiden, choosing to remain celibate, she was very
protective of her and her hunter s chastity. When men witnessed her naked, bathing, she would hear
their side of the story before striking them down, such was the tale of Sipriotes, who was a child and
accidently witnessed Artemis in the nude, being innocent she transformed him into a girl so she would
not have to kill him. However, when an adult hunter, Actaeon, witnessed her nudity, he demanded that
she be his wife and bear his children, Artemis responded by transforming him into a deer, to be eaten
by his dogs. Apollo was impatient in his dealings with humans; such as, when the Queen Niobe of
Delos bragged that she was greater than Leto, the twins mother, because she had sixteen children
instead of two, Apollo took his golden bow and struck down all of her children and incited the citizens
to tear her apart. Another instance was when Apollo had a flute contest with a satyr, with King Midas
as the sole judge. Apollo was certain he would win, being the god of music, but the satyr was declared
the winner, causing Apollo to fly into a fit of rage; he flayed the goat alive and cursed Midas with

Personality is often described in terms of traits. It is a combination of traits that classifies an individual

In 1995, Mitarai was faced with some very tough choices after he took over leadership of the
company. A traditional Japanese leader would probably have adopted a laissez faire approach and just
hoped to weather the storm. But Mitarai adopted an autocratic approach. Autocratic leadership is not

US enable Mitarai to know clearly that his key challenge was to return the company to profitability.
Therefore, he was merciless in axing unprofitable parts of the business.
This decision is made without any form of consultation. Based on Lewin s experiments, this may

Sarcasm And The Food Industry
Thanksgiving is a time when all my worries melt away and an illusionary warmth engulfs my very

aside from Christmas that is greeted with such a feast. It is a means for all of us to gather, give thanks,
and enjoy life s little things. Or rather, the things that seem little to us while remaining quite a thing to
behold in the shadows of one s own mind. It would be truly a sin to pry away the shelter that encases a

For this reason I never even so much as remember the radical thoughts I have been introduced to
throughout various sources damning the food industry. I know for a fact that I have read many articles
that show aspects that make it fairly reasonable to condemn the industry for practices being somewhat
demeaning for animals and humans alike. Not to mention the environmentalists that are pointing
fingers every which way when it comes to the artificially made products, animal and plant alike.
Albeit some of those articles have been rather one sided in comprehending the significance of the
field, they have had valuable information for their side of the argument. But I digress, I do not take
into consideration all of these outside factors because I have never dealt with the process of the
product. I do not fully appreciate the food that is placed on the table more for the thoughts I have
buried deep during the time of consumption. I do not remember why I need to appreciate it more. To
have the knowledge and be able to cast it aside so easily is either a curse or a blessing...if I remember
it I would never want to eat what is set before me. And if I do not remember it, I am showing much
disrespect for everything that goes into processed foods. I do not condone animal cruelty and I have
no viewpoint on the environment because I have a feeling there are about twenty times more things
that are occurring to ravage the earth in the background that are not being discussed. I agree with Peter
Singer s philosophy that we need to understand nature and develop the best theories we can to explain
why things are as they are, because only in that way can we work out what the consequences of our
actions are likely to be; but it would be a serious mistake to assume that natural ways of doing things

Long Term Development Policy Paper
Developing Policies Which Optimize Long term Service Sustainability for Vulnerable Infrastructure
Kevin L. Clark, Auroop Ganguly Abstract The Mission of the U.S. Department of Transportation is to
ensure all Americans are served by a fast, safe, efficient, accessible and convenient transportation
system that meets the nation s vital national interest and enhances the quality of life today and in the
future. The airport and National Airspace System (NAS) play a key role in achieving this mission.
That said, approximately 70% of the United States (U.S) air traffic is managed by staffed air traffic
control (ATC) facilities with an age range of 30 50 years[footnoteRef:1]. The Federal Aviation

Government Accountability Office, Report to Congressional Requesters, September 2013, GAO 13
757] INTRODUCTION One of the Federal Aviation Administration s (FAA) primary modernization
goals is to implement policies that ensure their 1,230 facilities enable robust Air Traffic Control (ATC)
services to meet air traffic demand requirements in a safe and efficient manner for all citizens. These
facilities provide the foundation for which the Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen)
programs are built on. The challenge of maintaining such complex airport and facility infrastructures
is in the assessment of needs and implementing a clear upgrade and sustainment prioritization strategy
that supports those needs. Similar to large private organizations the FAA utilizes business policies that
identify requirements, mitigate risk to staff and operations, and accelerate performance. However, to
often the expectation of seeing an immediate measurable change given a strategy has been
implemented is misguided. Evidence has shown policy changes display their impact in long term gains
or losses not short term. (Toyoda, 1991) The purpose of this research is to build a simulation model to
investigate the dynamics of modernization investment policies in the development of long term
service availability for all ATC facilities.

Effective Treatment Of A Rehabilitation Facility

Sharon s fate. There, medical staff rebuffed her entreaties for information pursuant to hospital
regulations providing that only designated family members could receive information about patients.3
Because she was not a

Prejudice continued from an unlikely quarter. Preceding the accident, relations between Karen and her

Donald Kowalski, relying on his biological relationship to his daughter, countered that his

denying Karen access to Sharon s medical records and supporting Mr. Kowalski s petition.7 The trial

This book is written from the past tense as President Obama discusses his lifestyle before he attended

The President has been dealing with losses and tough experiences since birth. Away from my mother,
away from my grandparents, I was engaged in a fitful interior struggle. I was trying to raise myself to
be a black man in America, and beyond the given of my appearance, no one around me seemed to
know exactly what that meant (Pg. 67). He had to learn a lot on his own which made him a stronger
person and more independent as he looked for ways to learn and how to adapt to different
surroundings especially since he moved around so often. Mr. President also took from his father in
intelligence as he states, He arrived at the University of Hawaii as the institutional s first African

African students had applied to the University of Hawaii, but Barack Obama Sr., was the only one to
be accepted, and then went on to attend Harvard University for graduate school, one of the most
prestigious schools in the nation today. President Obama suffered a good amount in his childhood, but

A Current Issue in California s Water Future
How Desalination Plants may help to aid California s Water Crisis
1.) Introduction
To whom it may concern;
The general problem is that California is in a drought. The state of California is searching high and
low trying to find a sustainable source of water. The specific problem is that California is not able to
produce a large amount of water, be that potable or water that may be able to be used in the extensive
agricultural and industrial sectors that California is known for world wide.

potable water from the ocean could be very effective, it ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
B.) History of the Issue The issue of building desalination plants has been a hot topic of Californians
in the past couple decades because researchers knew that our available surface and groundwater
supplies are becoming scarce. This problem is important because California is home to a large
population of people as well as extensive agricultural and industrial productions that need vast
amounts of water. With the reduction in available ground and fresh water brings other problems that
need to be addressed. Many farmers are having to impose stricter management policies in regards to
how they use the water the pay so much for. Crops sensitive to the amount of water they receive or do
not receive can be destroyed in a short amount of time if neglected of water. With the amount of fresh
water accumulated by both snow melt of California s mountains as well as ground water retrieved
from wells and pumps being depleted faster than we can recharge those sources, farmers face further
impacts. An article by Robert Glennon, Unquenchable: Americas water crisis and what to do about it
says In the summer of 2009, California is facing mandatory water rationing. Many farmers may be
entirely cut off, costing the economy more than $1 billion and putting more

Essay about Evidence for Evolution
Evolution and Diversity
Evolution and Diversity The foundation for the theory of evolution was laid by Charles Darwin (Rose,
n.d.). He developed hypotheses about natural selection which helped scientists develop the theory.
Evolution is a theory and not a hypothesis because evolution has been proven by vast amounts of
scientific data, research, and testing. The definition of a hypothesis is an educated explanation that
needs to be researched and tested but has not yet been proven (Earman, 1984). There has been no
scientific evidence to disprove the theory of evolution. The fossil record is evidence of evolution.
Fossils are often fingerprints of evolution. They help scientists track how species evolved ... Show

Many die before they are born or hatched depending on species, while many others don t survive
infancy and ultimately into their reproductive years. A portion of those that reach reproductive age
will never reproduce due to sterility or other factors. This is a part of the natural selection process. It is
often referred to as the, survival of the fittest (Frederic, 2011). It is hard to truly estimate what fraction
of offspring will survive to reproduction. There are always obstacles to survival for an organism.
Climate, food, habitat, and illness are just a few factors which affect natural selection. Ultimately we
know that some traits can increase survival rates for individuals such as their color. We know from
Darwin s research that a certain beak length was favorable in finches but that was also dependent on
yearly weather (Petren, 2005). Offspring that possess favorable traits are more capable of surviving
into adulthood and thus reproducing. We know from genetics that there is an increased likelihood that
their offspring would also possess that desirable trait. The population of individuals possessing the
trait would increase as more individuals possessing the trait survived to reproductive years, and fewer
without the trait did not. Natural selection can help prevent a species from going extinct if they were
to face adverse conditions that

Comparing The Ways Writer Present Doubts, Uncertainties...
Controlled Assessment Alby Joseph
Compare the ways writer present doubts, uncertainties and conflict in the minds of the characters.
Poems are the most simplistic way to express one s feelings and beliefs through writing. Poets mostly
try express love, loss, death, some may speak from their own experience or for the sake of their
characters who tend to be quite sophisticated. They tend to write about these 3 topics commonly due
to the fact that practically everyone has experienced this sort of emotion. Poetry has existed since man
could write, to Aristotle, to Victorian times and now to the present day where it is internationally used.
Poems are now used to promote movements for the benefit of the world, varying from poverty to the
sustainability of the environment; of which most have been successful due to poetry being able to
connect with the reader, even if they are not in the same situation. However they are still able to feel
what their character is feeling and what state of mind they are in. Poems also tend to be short so that
the reader does not loose concentration nor loose the power of the poem, but instead the poet chooses
to write to a short limithowever they choose their words carefully so that the reader will be intrigued
and contemplated the whole way through the poem however leave the poembeing fascinated.

Compare And Contrast Grant Vs Lee
Grant vs. Lee Amongst the civil war generals, Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee, were the most

different generals, which represented the power of two conflicting forces that through them had come
into a final collision that would change the entire direction of a nation. Even though the two went to
West Point, a prestigious military academy, and may seem alike, these two men were completely
different. Ulysses S. Grant was born on April 27th 1822, in Point Pleasant, Ohio. He was the first son

Cost Production and Types of Cost
Generally, the term cost of production refers to the money expenses incurred in the production of a
commodity. But money expenses are not the only expenses incurred on the production of a
commodity. There are number of services and inputs such as entrepreneurship, land, capital etc.,
which are offered by an entrepreneur without changing any price or receiving any payment for them.
While computing the total cost of production, allowance should be made for such expenses. It is
therefore essential to have clean understanding for the different types of cost:
Some example of the Types of Cost:
1. Actual (or, Acquisition or, Outlay) Costs: Actual costs are the costs which the firm incurs while
producing or acquiring a good or a service ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Sunk costs are irrelevant for decision making, as they do not vary with the changes contemplated for
future by the management. It is the incremental costs, which are important for decision making.
11. Out of pocket Costs: are those expenses, which are current cash payments to outsiders. All the
explicit costs like payment of rent, wages, salaries, interest, transport charges, etc., fall in the category
of out of pocket costs.
12. Book Costs : are those business costs which do not involve any cash payments but for them a
provision is made in the books of account to include them in profit and loss accounts and take tax
advantages, like the provisions for depreciation and for unpaid amount of the interest on the owner s
capital employed in the firm. In a way book costs are the imputed costs or the payments by a firm to
itself
13. Accounting Costs : are the actual or outlay costs. These costs point out how much expenditure has
already been incurred on a particular process or on production as such. Since these costs relate to the
past, these are generally sunk costs. The accounting costs are useful for managing taxation needs as
well as to calculate profit or loss of the firm.

seemingly effortless from a third party perspective, the influence of the workers union presented

Armed with a firm understanding of the company s finances, René Obermann initially looked after the

1000 megabits per second, that would call for either Category 5+, 5e or 6. Any one of those three is
technically capable of supporting Gigabit speeds. All three have been out for some time now and it
would be best to go ahead and spend the extra amount, although not too much extra, on the category 6
cable. If this is done, it is extremely unlikely that any re cabling would have to occur for the
foreseeable future (Lowe, 2002). The reason the author of this proposal would highly recommend
category 6 is because gigabit internet is the fastest that 5 and 5e can run at. As such, if there is any
increase in the speed of the other internet equipment in the coming years, an upgrade to speeds would
require re cabling of the actual network cable as well and that day is coming sooner than one may
think. Using 5 or 5e would be foolish because category 6 is not that much more expensive and
category 6 can handle ten gigabit (10,000 mbps) internet at its top end ¦and that is just an estimate. It

Nat Turner s Slave Rebellion Essay
#65279;
Nat Turner s Southampton Slave Revolt and How it Paved the Way for the Abolitionist and
Civil Rights Movement
Nat Turner was a man with a vision that would change America forever. His vision may
have not sounded right to the average person but to Nat Turner, he was on Earth to realize his vision.
Nat Turner is the most famous and most controversial slave rebel in American history, and he
remains a storm center of dispute( Fires of Jubilee author Stephen B. Oates).
Nat Turner s slave revolt may have not been the greatest way to solve the problem of slavery,
but it did open many people s eyes. Slavery was an accepted practice in society but it was not a
humane or kind thing. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Reading the bible is where Nat received many of his callings to start his massive slave
revolt.
As Nat grew a little older, his life began to change in a succession of unsuspected shocks.
First, his father ran away to the North, leaving Nat and Nancy still in slavery. After escaping he was
never heard from again, but Nat never forgot him( Fires of Jubilee ). Around 1810 Nat s master
Benjamin, died of a typhoid epidemic that was sweeping through the small Virginia neighborhood.
In Master Benjamin s will, he divided his land and his slaves among his children. Nat and his
mother now became property of Samuel Turner. Master Samuel was a cruel slave owner compared
to his. Like his father he was religious but he scared Christian religion into his slaves. He told them
that God had brought them to the new world to serve the white man, and that they were to be
obedient to the whites. He said if the slaves tried ever to revolt or try to escape they would burn in
hell with Satan forever. Nat lived under these ridiculous beliefs while on the plantation yet his
belief in the lord and the bible never favored. Another new experience was presented to Nat when
he turned twelve, he started to work difficult and laborious chores like the older male slaves. He
could no longer play games with white children, no more fishing and cavorting. The same white
children he and the

Differentiating Between Market Structures Essay
Markets are different, without these different markets there would not be any structure. Being able to
understand different markets and its language, like demand, supply, average variable cost and
marginal costs we can better prepare for economic and financial future. The market structure and the
interaction that occurs can be defined by the number of businesses, and barriers new firms have when
entering a particular market. Perfect competition, monopoly, monopolistic and oligopoly are four
forms of market structures recognized by economists.
Compare and Contrast
Public goods are by their nature non exclusive (people cannot be prevented from enjoying the good or
it is prohibitively costly to do so) and non rival (when one person consumes ... Show more content on

The cost of having a firm such as water and power is so high that it is not profitable to build another
firm to compete. Typically natural monopolies are utilities, which are regulated by the government to
prevent them from exploiting with high prices. Natural monopoly should not be compared to
Monopoly, as monopolies are normally short lived due to the technological advances developing
competition for an industry. (n/a, June 6, 2005, 2/5).
Common recourses, simply includes objects that everyone can use. Example: nature like air, and roads
where we drive on and or walk on. These common resources can be goods or services that people
contribute to the cost of the production by taxation that affects the value of land. Nature can provide
us all the basics such as trees that mankind can use to make furniture, boats and, many other useful
products. These natural resources can create labor, tools, and the cost of the product that brings profit
and increases the economy by the circular of human efforts by labor and sales of a finished product.
Other examples of common recourses are irrigation systems, fishing grounds, pastures, forests, water,
and the atmosphere (Acheson, 1988, 1/3).
Public goods are the non exclusive that represents a type of service that is available to public such as
doctors. When an individual, pays a doctor visit, it does not reduce any visits from the rest of the
public. In another words, the use of something by one person will not take

The Sander s Home-Personal Narrative
It was a warm summer evening in California. The Sanders were enjoying one of their last meals
together as a family before school started back up again. As the Sanders chowed down on flavorful pot

and summer is almost over, your mother and I have decided to take a family trip to Australia!
exclaimed Todd. The Sander s were a rich family who lived in a rich neighborhood, and in a big

Todd and Marie s third oldest child out of the pack. Reese was a strong and tall, sixteen year old with
and short, spiky dirty brown hair. Unlike any other rich teenage boy, Reese greatly enjoyed playing
sports and being active. He is also known as The Troublemaker out of his family. Reese zipped up his
suitcase, and put it near the door in his disheveled room. He then began to pack his backpack with his

Fashion And Fashion Design
Has man exceeded the power given to create? Gluttony and lust for material objects had lead to
overconsumption leaving a world full of accessible goods behind, human production processes and
man made products has invaded the natural world; having an catastrophic impact on the environment
as well as causing ethical strains within communities. This essay aims to explore the contribution
fashion design has to perpetrating dark times as well as highlighting the critical environmental and
ethical crisis that has emerged from the consequences of human action. With the exploration of new
product innovation and alternative natural renewable resources, this essay also endeavors to highlight
the pressing need for a more enhanced sustainable future. Design plays a crucial role in product
creation as it is the first process where new ideas form before they develop into a physical object. ...

to imagine and make things beyond nature (R Williams, 1997:82). By having the imagination and
power to create, humans have produced an abundance of material objects to meet the constant
demands of consumers. In todays society, value retailers are now encouraging fast fashion by
constantly releasing new designs at low prices, High street brands such as Primark, Zara and H M are
just a few examples that are contributing to the mass production of clothes. The size of the fashion

Cholera In The 18th Century
Summary The first Cholera epidemic in England appeared in October of 1831. Symptoms of Cholera
include dehydration, diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Soon the disease would take over the patient s
body and kill them. The second epidemic took place in 1848 through 1849 and killed almost 70,000
people throughout England and Wales. Doctors could not figure out the source of the illness or how to
cure it. The living conditions made this illness spread like wildfire. People were living in cramped
living areas and did not have proper sewage systems. Human waste was thrown into ditches and
alleyways. When the city would flood the sewage would flow into houses, marketplaces, streets, and
eventually made its way into streams and the Thames river. Doctor

  • 2. Summary Of Allegory Of Desolation In The Devil s Highway Luís Alberto Urrea uses the allegory of desolation in the book The Devils Highway, A True Story to illustrate life as well as death on the Devils Highway in the border region. The book accomplishes this through his usage of the word. The word desolation is defined as a state of complete emptiness or destruction. Often, the word does not appear, when this is the case, the illustration shifts to life. Morton W. Bloomfield described allegory by stating that it allows for the significance of a work to go beyond its meaning. The significance of that meaning is what may be called allegory. (Bloomfield, 1972) Desolation s meaning spans much more than its definition in The Devils Highway, A True Story. It can on different meanings, it is not limited to the definition. Desolation and Cosmos define Desolation stating, Desolation does not stand in isolation, but as a complex pattern. (Geyer, 1999) The allegory of Desolation is ones demise in the desert on the Devils Highway. In the author s note, Luís Albreto Urrea ends with the statement: But no story about death and the Devil s Highway could rightly exist without the strong presence of Desolation, in all its intimidating glory. (Urrea ) Urrea has directly indicated to us that there is no possible way that a story about death could be without desolation. The two are synonymous. Where one is the other must follow. Urrea makes this well known early on in the book by cluing the reader into the relationship that the two share. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Jd Salinger Essay Salinger, J(erome) D(avid) (1919 ), American novelist and short story writer, known for his stories dealing with the intellectual and emotional struggles of adolescents who are alienated from the empty, materialistic world of their parents. Salinger s work is marked by a profound sense of craftsmanship, a keen ear for dialogue, and a deep awareness of the frustrations of life in America after World War II (1939 1945). Jerome David Salinger was born and raised in New York City. He began writing fiction as a teenager. After graduating from the Valley Forge Military Academy in 1936, he began studies at several colleges in the New York City area, but he took no degree. He did, however, take a fiction writing class with Whit Burnett, an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the early 1960s, Salinger virtually stopped writing for publication and disappeared from public view into his rural New Hampshire home. In an interview that he granted during the 1970s, Salinger maintained that he continues to write daily, and has merely rejected publication as quot;a terrible invasion of his privacy. quot; Salinger s reclusiveness added to his cult status. II. Works Print section The Catcher in the Rye is narrated by Holden Caulfield, a 16 year old boy who has just flunked out of his third private boarding school. Unwilling to remain at school until the end of the term, Holden runs away to New York City. He does not contact his parents, who live there, but instead drifts around the city for two days. The bulk of the novel is an account, at once hilariously funny and tragically moving, of Holden s adventures in Manhattan. These include disillusioning encounters with two nuns, a suave ex schoolmate, a prostitute named Sunny, and a sympathetic former teacher who may be homosexual. Finally, drawn by his affection for his ten year old sister, Phoebe, Holden abandons his spree and returns home. Salinger s depiction of Holden Caulfield is considered one of the most convincing portrayals of an adolescent in literature. Intelligent, sensitive, and imaginative, Holden desires acceptance into the adult world even though he is sickened and obsessed by what he regards as its quot;phonies, quot; including his teachers, parents, and his older ... Introduction Respected Marxist critic Frederic Jameson once described every instance of third world literature as necessarily nationally allegorical (69), an assertion spectacularly assailed by Aijaz Ahmad (77 82). But it is possible to close our eyes to Ahmad s very valid misgivings and take a bird s eye view of Jameson s assertion: read in reaction to the phenomenon of imperialism, perhaps the literature of dominated peoples is the literature of self assertion, however blind to Jameson s national allegorical (or anticolonial) imperative, and however hybrid . That last expression might as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... But first, I must situate Americanah in its post colonial moment. 2. Situating Americanah in the Post Colonial Moment Since it is published in 2013, the material reality of Americanah is conditioned, however distantly it seems now, by the phenomenon of colonialism it is written in English, for instance. Although published in 2013, the temporality and spatiality of Americanah s narrative extends backwards to the late 70s when its major protagonist, Ifemelu, was born. As a child, she witnesses the death by firing squad of that famous robbery kingpin, Lawrence Anini (148), and lives through coups, coups attempts, strikes and the usual brand of public dysfunction that still haunts Nigeria, therefore linking its post coloniality with that decidedly African brand of introverted, introspective post independence post coloniality of disillusionment exemplified by novels such as Ayi Kwei Armah s The Beautyful Ones Are Not Yet Born, Chinua Achebe s No Longer at Ease and Anthills of the Savannah, and soon enough with the post coloniality of globalization (and the neoliberal ideology that has hijacked it). As we see in the novel, this disillusionment is the animus of her exile. Ifemelu arrives America in 1997, the year in which Kudirat Abiola, activist wife of M.K.O Abiola, was killed (116). Here, Americanah s post coloniality takes a new turn. This new turn, inaugurated by Ifemelu s (voluntary ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. The Most Complex Organs Of The Human Body The eye is one of the most complex organs of the human body. In the human eye, three layers can be distinguished. The outer region consists of the cornea and the sclera [4]. The cornea refracts and transmits the light to the lens and the retina and protects the eye against infection and structural damage to the deeper parts. The sclera is a thick, opaque white tissue that covers 95% of the surface area of the eye. The sclera forms a connective tissue coat that protects the eye from internal and external forces and maintains its shape. The cornea and the sclera are connected at the limbus. The visible part of the sclera is covered by a transparent mucous membrane, the conjunctiva. The middle layer of the eye is composed of the iris, the ciliary body ... The iris controls the size of the pupil, and thus the amount of light reaching the retina; the ciliary body controls the power and shape of the lens and is the site of aqueous production; and the choroid is a vascular layer that provides oxygen and nutrients to the outer retinal layers. The surrounding sclera and cornea help to protect retina and keep it in the appropriate position. There are six major classes in neural retina: photoreceptors, bipolar cells, horizontal cells, amacrine cells and ganglion cells, which capture and process light signals; and the Mullerian glia, which act as the organizational backbone of the neural retina. • 6. Substitution And Elimination Reaction Lab Report Substitution and Elimination Reactions Substitution reactions replace a functional group with a new group. These reactions compete with elimination reactions in which a group is eliminated and a π (pi) bond is formed. Substitution reactions occur when a nucleophile is added to an electrophile/substrate. Elimination reactions occur when a base is added to an electrophile/substrate. The electrophile must contain a leaving group to be considered a substrate. Alkyl Halides Alkyl Halides are the common substrate used in substitution and elimination reactions. Alkyl Halides are halogen containing alkane compounds. These compounds are commonly used as the electrophile in substitution reactions. Naming Alkyl Halides is similar to naming alkanes. Halogen substituents are named just like alkane substituents, for example if there is a chlorine attached to an ethane the chlorine substituent will be named using the word chloro . The other halogens are named using the words flouro , bromo , and iodo respectively. These possible substituents are listed alphabetically along with the alkane substituents. When dealing with alkyl halides it is important to note that the carbons attached to the halogens and the carbons attached to those carbons are involved in the reaction process, therefore we designate these carbons with special symbols to differentiate them from the rest of the molecule. The carbon atom that is bonded to the halogen is designated the α (alpha) carbon. The carbons that are ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Impact Of Napoleon On The French Revolution From conquering most of Europe in the early 19th century, to crowning himself emperor in 1804, Napoleon Bonaparte was a very important figure in history. • 11. John Rawls s Theory Of Justice If we could invent a time traveling machine and go back in time there are decisions and events that we would go through great lengths to try to reverse or change the outcome of in the future. We might decide to not take a specific date to the prom, stay with the one that got away, or work on our jump shot a little more. But what would we do if we could put a video game reset on our society as a whole? John Rawls proposed a similar question in his theory of the original position in A Theory of Justice. In Rawls original position, he asks individuals to decide which laws and principles would work in the best interest of society as a whole if we were to have a sort of fresh start (Shaw Barry, 2016). This theory and other theories proposed by Rawls encourage individuals to make objective decisions in business and in everyday life that allow for cooperative efforts to take place and for positive changes to be made within society. Why is this? Under the original position we would all choose a society that held fundamental liberties for everyone and would hold that inequalities only be allowed if they would benefit the least fortunate (Shaw Barry, 2016). This sounds too good to be true, as many people have conflicting interests and beliefs that would prevent them from this sort of reasoning, you might say. Rawls, however, also asks that people remove their individual biases, status, gender, etc. or use a veil of ignorance when assessing their idealized fundamental principles. ... However, when an adult hunter, Actaeon, witnessed her nudity, he demanded that she be his wife and bear his children, Artemis responded by transforming him into a deer, to be eaten by his dogs. Apollo was impatient in his dealings with humans; such as, when the Queen Niobe of Delos bragged that she was greater than Leto, the twins mother, because she had sixteen children instead of two, Apollo took his golden bow and struck down all of her children and incited the citizens to tear her apart. Another instance was when Apollo had a flute contest with a satyr, with King Midas as the sole judge. Many farmers are having to impose stricter management policies in regards to how they use the water the pay so much for. Crops sensitive to the amount of water they receive or do not receive can be destroyed in a short amount of time if neglected of water. With the amount of fresh water accumulated by both snow melt of California s mountains as well as ground water retrieved from wells and pumps being depleted faster than we can recharge those sources, farmers face further impacts. An article by Robert Glennon, Unquenchable: Americas water crisis and what to do about it says In the summer of 2009, California is facing mandatory water rationing. He developed hypotheses about natural selection which helped scientists develop the theory. Evolution is a theory and not a hypothesis because evolution has been proven by vast amounts of scientific data, research, and testing. The definition of a hypothesis is an educated explanation that needs to be researched and tested but has not yet been proven (Earman, 1984). There has been no scientific evidence to disprove the theory of evolution. The fossil record is evidence of evolution. Fossils are often fingerprints of evolution. Many die before they are born or hatched depending on species, while many others don t survive infancy and ultimately into their reproductive years. A portion of those that reach reproductive age will never reproduce due to sterility or other factors. This is a part of the natural selection process. It is often referred to as the, survival of the fittest (Frederic, 2011). It is hard to truly estimate what fraction of offspring will survive to reproduction. There are always obstacles to survival for an organism. Climate, food, habitat, and illness are just a few factors which affect natural selection. Ultimately we know that some traits can increase survival rates for individuals such as their color. We know from Darwin s research that a certain beak length was favorable in finches but that was also dependent on yearly weather (Petren, 2005). Offspring that possess favorable traits are more capable of surviving into adulthood and thus reproducing. We know from genetics that there is an increased likelihood that their offspring would also possess that desirable trait. The population of individuals possessing the trait would increase as more individuals possessing the trait survived to reproductive years, and fewer without the trait did not. Natural selection can help prevent a species from going extinct if they were to face adverse conditions that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Poems are the most simplistic way to express one s feelings and beliefs through writing. Poets mostly try express love, loss, death, some may speak from their own experience or for the sake of their characters who tend to be quite sophisticated. They tend to write about these 3 topics commonly due to the fact that practically everyone has experienced this sort of emotion. Poetry has existed since man could write, to Aristotle, to Victorian times and now to the present day where it is internationally used. Poems are now used to promote movements for the benefit of the world, varying from poverty to the sustainability of the environment; of which most have been successful due to poetry being able to connect with the reader, even if they are not in the same situation. However they are still able to feel what their character is feeling and what state of mind they are in. Poems also tend to be short so that the reader does not loose concentration nor loose the power of the poem, but instead the poet chooses to write to a short limithowever they choose their words carefully so that the reader will be intrigued and contemplated the whole way through the poem however leave the poembeing fascinated. IT Proposal The proposal attached herein this report proposes the cheapest and most cost effective way to implement a Gigabit internet setup for ABC Inc s offices. Since all of the offices and workstations in question are within 150 feet of the company s wiring closet, it will not take a lot of infrastructure to get the job done. However, ABC should not cheap out and get the bare minimum setup either. Proposed Equipment As for the cabling that would be required to get Gigabit internet, or 1000 megabits per second, that would call for either Category 5+, 5e or 6. Any one of those three is technically capable of supporting Gigabit speeds. All three have been out for some time now and it would be best to go ahead and spend the extra amount, although not too much extra, on the category 6 cable. If this is done, it is extremely unlikely that any re cabling would have to occur for the foreseeable future (Lowe, 2002). The reason the author of this proposal would highly recommend category 6 is because gigabit internet is the fastest that 5 and 5e can run at. As such, if there is any increase in the speed of the other internet equipment in the coming years, an upgrade to speeds would require re cabling of the actual network cable as well and that day is coming sooner than one may think. Using 5 or 5e would be foolish because category 6 is not that much more expensive and category 6 can handle ten gigabit (10,000 mbps) internet at its top end ¦and that is just an estimate. It ...
