Improvements in Cases for Ink Pads, Cigarettes, Pins and other
Articles We, CARL FR. BRAUER G.M.B.H., a German Company of
Osterbekstrasse 21, Hamburg 21, Germany, do hereby declare the
invention for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and
the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly
described in and by the following statement: This invention relates to
cases with hinged lids released for opening by operation by actuation
of a spring loaded retainer normally holding the lid closed. The class
of case in question is of the type suitable for use on a desk to
contain an ink impregnated pad for inking rubber stamps, pins or the
like or it is suitable as a container for cigarettes, articles of
jewellery and other loose articles.
The object of the present invention is to' provide an improved device
for retaining the 20lid in the closed position and which is so
combined with the case as to form a neat and attractive part thereof
shaped and dimensioned for ready operation by finger pressure but yet
not interfering with the continuity of the wall of the compartment of
the case containing the pad or other articles. Another object of the
present invention is to provide a case suitable for the purpose set
forth whilst being ornamental and affording an efficient closure,
provides support for the lid retainer which ensures the spring means
thereof being obscured by a neat finger-pressure operated member.
According to the present invention the case comprises a tray-like base

2. the rim of which includes substantially parallel with its plane a
forwardly directed web, a lid hinged to the rear wall of the base a
slot in said web, a retainer member supported for rota40tion on a
horizontal axis spaced below said web, the top of said retainer member
in its normal condition substantially filling said slot and partly
being proud of the upper face of said web to afford a part to be
depressed by finger pressure whilst the remainder of [Price 316] the
retainer member is accommodated within a space beneath the said web
and between the tray-like base and the front edge of the web, spring
means urging the retainer into said normal condition, said top of the
retainer member at the side thereof adjacent the free edge of the
closed lid being shaped to serve as a retainer abutment for the free
edge of the lid when in the closed position, the arrangement being
such that the whole 55 of the means for retaining the lid in the
closed position is supported in front of the front wall of the
tray-like base.
Further in accordance with the present invention the case comprises a
tray-like base 60 the front wall of which has joined integral
therewith a forwardly directed web, a lid hinged to the rear wall of
said base, a slot extending along said web in advance of said front
wall, a depending front flange integral 65 with said web, a retainer
member supported within the space between said flange and the front
wall of the tray-like base and shaped to' substantially fill said slot
and having its upper part slightly proud of the upper face 70 of said
web, whilst at its rear end it is shaped to serve as a retaining
abutment for a lip on the free edge of said lid, a pair of support
members for said retainer member disposed below said web and between
which the retainer member is supported for rotation about an axis
parallel with the front wall of the said tray-like base and spring
means urging the said retainer member into retaining engagement with
the lid. 80 It is preferred to make the case of a thermo-setting or
thermoplastic resin the lid and base each preferably comprising a
one-piece moulding.
An embodiment of the invention is illustrated by the accompanying
drawings, wherein, Fig. 1 is a perspective view looking at the front
and one end of the case; Fig. 2 is a rear elevation view; 90 780,113

Referring to the drawings the base 1 of the case comprises a
rectangular shallow tray, e.g. dimensioned to accommodate an ink pad
for inking rubber stamps for which purpose the peripheral walls 2 need
only to be about one quarter of an inch deep. The side walls at the
front corners of the base have joined integrally to them as if in
continuity therewith a flange 3 bowed forwardly and depending

3. integrally from the front edge of a web 4 covering the space between
said bowed flange and the front wall of the tray-like base IS and
preferably with its surface in a plane very slightly above the plane
of the rim of the base to afford a shallow step 5 at the rear of the
web, upon which abuts the front edge of a lid 6 of inverted tray-like
form hinged by the rim of its rear edge to the rim of the rear wall of
the base, e.g. by a pianotype hinge with a pair of sleeves 7 carried
by the lid and a sleeve 8 carried by the base, end sleeves 9 also
preferably being 25formed with the base, inconspicuous torsion springs
10 on the hinge pin which passes through the sleeves serving to swing
the lid to the open position.
The forwardly bowed part beyond the 30front wall of the tray-like base
is hollow underneath as shown in Fig. 3 and has disposed across it a
pair of parallel partitions in the form of rectangular pieces 11 of
plastic or other suitable material, which can be en35gaged in channels
on the opposed faces of the bowed flange and the front wall of the
tray, e.g. by forming vertical ribs on such wall and flange. In holes
in these pieces of material near their rear -ends a pivot pin 12 is
supported for rotation so that it is spaced below the said web, its
axis is horizontal, and is parallel with the front wall of the base.
The pivot pin 12 near these pieces of material is fixed in segmental
shaped ends 13 of an inverted arcuate section retainer member 14 of
plastic or other suitable material, the top of which in its normal
condition substantially fills an oblong slot 15 along the centre of
the said web 4 parallel with the front wall of the base of the case
and partly being proud of the upper surface of the web to afford a
part to be depressed by finger pressure, the remainder of the retainer
member being accommodated within the space beneath the web and between
the flange and the front wall of the base. The rear edge of the top of
the retainer member adjacent the lid is shaped to serve as an abutment
for a lip 16 projecting slightly from the free edge of the lid to hold
the lid closed under the influence of two torsion springs 17 fitted to
the pivot pin 12. Thus the arrangement is such that the whole of the
means for retaining the lid in its closed position is supported in
front of the front wall of the base. The lid is released to the open
position by a forward rocking of the retainer member by finger
pressure about the axis of its hinge-like support formed by the pin
12, pieces 11 and end parts 13, and a small projection 18 on the front
70 edge of said member abuts against the adjacent edge of said oblong
slot to limit the return action of the springs when the lid is open.
The lid 6 of inverted tray-like form is preferably deeper at its rear
than at its front to give a slight incline at 6a in Fig. 4 to the top
of the lid when closed, this inclined part merging by a radiused part
6b into the rear rim of the lid. It is preferred to radius all 80
