1) The documentary discusses representations of gender, race, age, disability/ability, sexuality, class/status, and world of the film in the production "CLICK".
2) Gender roles are represented unconventionally, with the male protagonist Tyler portrayed as comical and the female protagonist Rebecca as flirtatious and picky.
3) The three main characters are of different races to represent diversity, with the Black male protagonist having more confidence than the Caucasian female.
4) The characters portray younger ages than the actors, with Tyler acting immature at 19 while trying to impress the younger but mature 18-year-old Rebecca.
2. GENDER
In our production ‘CLICK’, both genders are represented unconventionally. The
male gender is represented by our main protagonist, Tyler in our production. Men
are represented as quite comical as Tyler repeatedly says the wrong things to try and
impress a girl.
The female gender is mainly represented by Rebecca, who is the young girl
approached by Tyler. She is represented as quite flirtatious and very picky. As soon
as she discovers something about Tyler she doesn’t like, she rejects him immediately
causing him to go back in time to impress her.
3. RACE
All 3 characters in our production are of a different race. We purposely
did this to represent the day and age in which we are filming, in which
inter-racial couples are more common. Our male protagonist is Black, we
feel he fits the character of Tyler as he has more confidence. Our female
protagonist Rebecca is Caucasian and well-spoken compared to Tyler. Our
final character Emily, is mixed-raced and although has less screen-time,
she delivers the twist to our narrative.
4. AGE
Although our actors are younger than what we are portraying them as
on screen, as individuals they can deliver the age we ask of them.
Tyler is 19, who is on the verge of adulthood, but also in his last years
of adolescence, is portrayed as immature at first. However, whilst trying
to impress Rebecca he acts more educated and older.
Rebecca is 18, we decided she should be younger than Tyler, as
conventionally in a couple the girl is younger. She is very mature for her
age as she speaks in a well-educated manner.
5. DISABILTY/ABILITY
Our characters display no disability as we believed we did not need
to complicate our narrative.
However although they don’t display any physical abilities, the use
of the pen that Tyler uses to time travel can be seen as a form of an
extra ability he possesses as no one else can time travel like him.
6. SEXUALITY
As our film is set in the 21st century, we decided to explore different
types of sexualities in our film. This was to ensure our film reflected the
rapidly changing society and capture it effectively.
We explored sexuality by having a female gay couple. Rebecca, our
female protagonist was being hit on by Tyler, our male protagonist, just
when the audience think he has successfully gained her interest
romantically, her girlfriend Emily walks up to them and kisses her.
This creates a plot twist as the audience don’t expect Rebecca to have a
girlfriend and also creates a comedic aspect.
7. CLASS/STATUS
As our characters are quite young, they fall into the socio-
economic group of C2-E. This is because they are still students and
may be reliant on parents for financial stability.
The status of Tyler can be seen as slightly lower than Rebecca as
he is not well-spoken and dresses in an informal manner. Rebecca on
the other hand articulates her words well, and is slightly more formal.
8. WORLD OF THE FILM
Our film is set in the 21st century in the ‘real world’
However although everything else is normal the concept of time
travel is an element that differs from real life.
This is what makes our film different as our male protagonist
experiences an unexplainable phenomenon.
