This document compares the representations of two female characters, Leah from "The Shrine" and Kim from "Taken". Both characters are teenagers who find themselves in dangerous situations. While both play lead roles and make phone calls seeking help, Leah's role is more ambiguous and she does not seek help from a male figure. In contrast, Kim conforms to stereotypes by calling her father for help, and her role is minimized once her father comes to rescue her. The document analyzes how the two films differently represent vulnerable young women.

3. Similarities
• These girls are both of similar ages, they are at an age of vulnerablity because
although they are growing up, there are still so many dangers in the world
available to them. We chose Leah to play the teenage girl in our clip as she is
of this age (17) which is of a similar age to the Kim’s character in Taken, we
wanted the girl in our opening to appear young and vulnerable conforming to
typical gender stereotypes
• Both these charcters play the lead role in their film, Leah has quite a forward
role in ‘The Shrine’ in which she takes control, both Leah and Kim make phone
calls in their films in an attempt to deal with their situations
• They both play a proactive role within the film, this is shown most through
their phonecalls perhaps
• Both Kim and leah wear clothes which reflect ther age (Leah in shorts and a
top and Kim in a summer dress)- thye both also appear carefree which might
help a teen audience relate to their situations and them as characters as the
audience can imagine and empathise with their plight

4. Differences
• Leah’s role in ‘The Shrine’ is much more ambiguous
than Kim’s in ‘Taken’ as Kim conforms to stereotypical
images of women and calls a male figure (her dad)
• Whereas, the audience is left unaware of who Leah
calls- a parent? A friend? This makes Leah’s role all the
more mysterious
• Also, Kim’s role in minimised after the opening of
‘Taken” as her father comes to hr rescue once again
conforming to the idea that when in need a female will
always seek male help
• This is in contrast, to Leah who is alone in her story
against her stalker
