1. I was actually rather disappointed to see dated as one of the favourites for the festival
because it is something we have seen all before. The ‘damsel in distress’ type of
character identified by Propp we see is an archaic idea of women. Where the only role
of women is to be saved and act as a prize for the ‘hero’. This piece like many others is
fundamentally based on women as objects to please men.

There is clear evidence
of ‘the male gaze’ a principle recognised by Laura Mulvey. The introduction of the
female protagonist starts with a shot of her feet, exactly how a men would look a
woman up and down. And don’t get me started on the rest of the opening sequence.
We hear the girl running panting and even squealing as she desperately runs away
from the predator. This is clearly giving the impression the girl is weak and pathetic and
this is a very harmful, sexist and boring representation of women.
Yes the representation of age is also a problem. Dated uses the classic stereotype that
teens are up to no good. The blurring throughout clearly shows our protagonist is
inebriated. It unfairly conforms to the idea the younger generation are up to no good.
