This document contains data from a study comparing classroom temperatures with and without PCM CoolZone ceiling tiles. The classroom with the PCM tiles showed consistently lower peak temperatures over the summer of 2013. Thermal modeling also showed that a classroom failed to pass thermal comfort standards without PCM tiles but passed when fitted with 20sqm of PCM tiles. Data from other schools demonstrated energy savings of up to 160 kWh/m2/yr from using PCM materials.

Summary ©Breathing Buildings Ltd. • PSBP Facilities Output Specification (FOS) for Winter - Avoid cold draughts, no cold air dumping - No pre-heating!!! • New PSBP FOS summertime overheating criteria - Closely aligned with CIBSE TM52 - Exposed thermal mass encouraged … and makes passing the criteria easier!!! • New PSBP FOS will be reflected in Ventilation Guidance to replace BB101

- The energy savings are considerable. The chart above gives the fossil fuel bills in secondary schools on a kWhr/sqm/yr basis and compares that with our buildings. We predicted 50 kWhr/sqm/yr. QAC used 56kWhr/sqm/yr, which is about half of good practice, and 1/3rd of typical practice. A massive factor of 3 saving! The data from Port Regis is similar, except in this case the building had a ground source heat pump that was not metered separately. We are therefore showing the TOTAL energy consumption of the building and comparing that with just the fuel normally used for heating and hot water. Staggering difference.
- In summary, the new regulations herald a new dawn for schools. 1) Draughts are no longer allowed, and you are not allowed to use pre-heaters to cure the problem – you need to use the internal gains. 2) new summertime overheating criteria have been introduced which are now closely aligned with the standards for office buildings. Gone are the days when designers had to use one set of criteria and weather files for offices and a completely different set for schools. 3) The requirements laid out in the PSBP FOS will be included in the new regulations to apply to all schools because BB101 is being withdrawn and replaced with the new document.
