Marburg virus disease is a severe hemorrhagic fever caused by the Marburg virus. It is related to the Ebola virus and can be transmitted between humans through direct contact with bodily fluids. Two large outbreaks in Germany and Serbia in 1967 were associated with African green monkeys. Subsequent outbreaks have occurred in Angola, DRC, Kenya, South Africa, and Uganda. Symptoms include high fever, headache, vomiting, and diarrhea which can lead to severe hemorrhaging. There is currently no proven treatment, but supportive care such as rehydration can improve survival rates.
