Sam Williams produced a documentary featuring interviews with individuals who lived in Iran and Afghanistan during times of change in those countries over the past decade. Through research of other documentaries, Sam developed questions for military and civilian interviewees. Some interviews took place at Sam's house while others occurred at interviewees' homes to promote an informal feeling. While Sam struggled to find archival footage, the technical quality of recording improved over prior projects. Peer feedback noted the insightful content but suggested including more perspectives and footage along with improved editing and introductions/conclusions.

3. Research
• I started by looking at some of the documentary's
that I like such as once upon a time in Iraq and
Bitter lake they gave me a lot of inspiration for
how I wanted to shape my project and
interviews.
• I looked at the way the interviews in Once upon a
time in Iraq are done and got an idea of what
types of questions were asked and why.
• I then looked at the way archival footage is used
in Bitter lake and the way it all links together.

4. Research
• Interviewee questions
– I had to craft my questions around the interviewees
• for example, for the military interview I had to draft up the questions them send
them over so they could be checked and then I was told if I could ask them or not.
• Whereas for the civilian questions I drafted them up and sent them to the
interviewee so they could get an Idea of what I wanted to ask.
• Interviewee research
– I gave a lot of thought to the background to the people that I interview
wed my criteria for selecting them was:
• I chose people that lived in 2 country's Iran and Afghanistan due to their relevance
in world events in the past decade.
• I also chose people who lived in those countries at a time of their change

5. Planning
• I was pleased with the way I briefed my interviewees before we sat down and started
recording.
• I sent them an email letting them know what my project was and if they would like to
be interviewed for it, then I sent them the questions in advance so they could tweek
anything that they didn’t like and so they could get an understanding for what I would
like to ask them. This was appreciated by all the interviewees and made
the actual recording of the interview much smoother.
• The location settings for all the interviews worked some at my house some at their
own. It gave the interviews an informal feeling which helped them relax and
talk honestly about their experience.
• I struggled to find video archive footage on my college days this was frustrating because
it used up a lot of my planning time and I had nothing to show for it.
• I experienced some technical peoblems with edting I didn’t allow for a half term
break, but I resolved it by ordering the editing software I needed for my PC at home.
• Overall, i felt much more confident with this project and used the experience I gained in
my last projects. Eg: I did better reserch, I knew who my target audeance was, I had a
good voson in my head as to what I wanted the final product to look like.

6. Time Management
• Overall, I think I could have improved my planning, at the beginning of
the project I put togerther a realistic timeline, but I wasn’t very good
at regularly reviewing it.
• If I had followed my plan, I would have organised my interviews
sooner, this would have given me more time to edit.
• I have maneged to complete all my interviews and written presentations
before the final deadline, but they would have benefited by being
reviewed by Scott much earlier. (my fault not his!).

7. Technical Qualities
• In previous projects I used two microphones however I found that the
audio was too loud due to both microphones picking upon the speaking
this time I used one this made the audio less choppy and smoother
although it is still not perfect.
• The use of a camara on a tripod gave steady head shoots and gave the
look I was trying to achieve.
• I was going to set up lights however having viewed the location I would
be filming in the natural ight gave the relaxed style I was looking to
achieve, so I decided against setting up formal studio lighting.

8. Aesthetic Qualities
• For my research I watched several documentrys where individuals are
interviewed. The style I wanted to create was a 'laid-back' chat styled
interview rather than a formal interview. I was pleased this I managed to
create this look by having my interviewee sitting in a chair in natural
daylight in an informal setting. I am off camara, but you can hear my voice.
I think it is effective.

9. Audience Appeal
• I want to give people a better insight into how you can live
and work in a normal way in a country of conflict.
• My document includes photos taken by the
interviewees this will interest people who want to look at
everyday life in a country that they have and may
never visit.
• All ages (military and social theme but no graphic content)
• People who are interested in learning about the
background of the countries that have a different culture
and about the people who experienced living and working
in these countries.
• People who have a basic understanding about the unstable
situation in Iraq, Iran and Afghanistan over the past
20 years.

• For the questions, I think there should be subtitles to fully
ensure the questions are clear.

• Good questions, hearing the 2 different experience of being in the
middle east. I like the use of photos to give a good sense of where
they were based.

• Editing could have been a bit slicker in parts, needed more of
an introduction, this would help leading into the first question
and setting the scene and an end.

• I'm not sure mainly because I agree with all the suggested
improvements but if a had to pick something I would probably say I
disagree with the point about the subtitles mainly because I don’t
really like subtitles but also if you watch the video on YouTube, you
can put subtitles on the video.
