2. Notion
‘Music videos are simply an extension of the
lyrics’ Some key points:
1. Relationship between visuals and lyrics
2. Relationship between sound and visuals #
3. Genre related style
3. Relationship between visuals and lyrics Goodwin’s
theory explains how a music video either links strongly
to the lyrics, or is a complete contrast. One example of
this is James Bay’s ‘Let It Go’ music video, where the
emotional lyrics are mirrored by the dim lighting and
environment which is empty. Facial expressions from
the artist also mirror the mood created by the lyrics of
the song.
4. Relationship between the sound and visuals
Andrew Goodwin found that the visuals in a
music video can be edited in time with music
from the song. He also states that certain visuals
are sometimes repeated during the chorus, in
order to emphasise the lyrics.
5. Genre related style Goodwin goes on to explain
how certain artists can repeat actions/styles
within their videos, which can go on to make
their trademark. This trademark then is further
recognised by their fans when videos are
released. These actions and styles flow
throughout an artists videos, such as Amy
Winehouse’s videos, where her hair is a symbol
which she is remembered by due to the
repetition of it in her videos.
