The cyclone HudHud originated in the North Andaman Sea in the Bay of Bengal and made landfall in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha in India. It had wind speeds as high as 170-180 km/h which uprooted 70% of trees and damaged 70% of power lines in Vishakhapatnam. Over 300 relief camps were opened and the government distributed food rations and aid worth Rs. 1000 crore to help over 300,000 people across 59 villages affected by the cyclone.

Typhoon Haiyan
Typhoon Haiyan formed in November 2013 and struck the Philippines on November 8th as a category 5 typhoon with peak gust speeds of 379 kph, making it one of the strongest storms on record. It affected Southeast Asia, especially the Philippines, Vietnam, and China. Typhoon Haiyan caused over 6,000 deaths, destroyed over 160,000 buildings and 384,000 acres of land, resulting in an estimated $1.5 billion in damages. It was one of the worst typhoons to impact the Philippines.

Floods can have significant social and economic impacts on cities. Socially, floods can cause injuries, spread of diseases, and loss of life from homelessness or disrupted access to clean water. Economically, floods can damage machinery and equipment, preventing factories from operating at full capacity. Droughts, flash floods, flooding from monsoonal rains, severe thunderstorms, earthquakes cyclones, landslides and other disasters that kill dozens of people every year in India. They would be front page news if they happened in America but in India are buried in the back pages of Indian newspapers because they occur so frequently. The death of 5,000 people from the December 2004 tsunami wasn’t as big a deal in India as might have been in other places. In 2001, India experienced an earthquake that left 25,000 dead. In 1999, a cyclone killed more than 3,500 people. Every year several hundred Indians die in monsoon floods.
Mark Twain once commented that Indians "are a curious people. With them all life seems to be sacred, excepted human life." On a flood one Indian newspaper editor told AP, “Floods don’t have any disaster value any more. It’s nothing new. Its an annual phenomena, so newspaper editors are indifferent. People have gotten immune to human disasters. It tragic but true.”
In the early 2000s, the Indian government promised to provide families $2,400 for each victim killed in a disaster provided the family show proof of death. In the majority of cases, families failed to collect the compensation payments because they couldn’t prove the victim was dead. Sometimes bodies are cremated before they are identified. For religious and health reasons, the dead are often cremated soon after a disaster occurs. The final death counts from natural disasters are often unknown.

- 4. HUD HUD CYCLONE • On 12 October 2014, the category 3 tropical cyclone • Hudhud made landfall on the coast of Andhra • Pradesh, near the city of Visakhapatnam (also • known as Vizag). At the time of impact, the wind • force was approximately 200 km/h, and height of the • waves up to 3 meters. The city of Visakhapatnam • was heavily damaged, including the airport, a • number of buildings, electrical and • telecommunications supplies and roads.

Central and State Government action: The state authorities of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh have strong capacity in responding to floods and cyclones, in view of their extensive experience with these disasters, as well as being at the forefront of the government lead National Cyclone Risk Mitigation Project (NCRM)

Red Cross and Red Crescent action: Andhra Pradesh: As of 13 October, 217 certified First Medical Responders (FMR), volunteers, and trained disaster response members have been actively involved in the initial damage assessments and immediateresponse inthefour most affected districts of Srikakulam,Vijayanagaram, Vishakapatnam and East Godavari. One thousand families have been assisted with food and water in four villages. In addition, Red Cross staff and volunteers supported the local authorities in evacuations,rescueand organizing relief camps. Red Cross volunteers are also engaged in clearing fallen trees and facilitated road access to affected areas
