Promethean Training
Prompt: Plan a technology training opportunity for teacher professional development.
Include the following elements:
1. SMART goals
2. Planned activities
3. Expected outcomes
4. Measuring participants’ learning
5. Facilitating return of learning to classroom

Professional Development Plan Overview
Professional Development will take place in two half-day sessions, the first in
September and the next in November. Participants may opt to attend follow-up mini-
sessions over the course of the year and training materials will be available online.
Building Technology Coaches will facilitate training sessions in their buildings using
training resources common to all district schools. Training resources have been placed
into modules which will be self-selected by trainees, under the guidance of district
technology staff. Modules may be completed in any order but most build upon skills
learned in earlier modules. Training modules are housed on a Web site developed
specifically for district professional development: http://pbtraining.weebly.com/index.html
(see Appendix A)
Characteristics of Participants
Professional Development was designed for teachers in a suburban K-8 school
district who have ongoing access to a Promethean’s ActivInspire software. Rolling
installations of Promethean Boards mean attendees will have had a variety of
experiences and prior training. Also, in four of the six buildings, ActivExpression devices
have been recently purchased for each classroom with the intent being that they will be
used extensively to guide instruction. Teachers in the other two buildings (both K-5)
have traveling sets of ActiVote and ActivExpression devices available.
 Cohort 1: K-3 classroom teachers and Middle School math teachers had newly
installed Promethean Boards in their classroom at the time of initial district

training sessions one year ago. The September training session will be their third
formal training session since their board was installed.
 Cohort 2: Remaining elementary staff participated in initial training sessions but
did not have access to a Promethean Board at that time. The September training
session will be their third formal training session overall, but the first since their
classroom’s Promethean Board was installed.
 Cohort 3: Remaining Middle School teachers have newly installed Promethean
Boards in their classrooms. This will be their first exposure to Promethean
technologies.
 Cohort 4: Cohort 4 is comprised of K-8 teachers who have access to ActivInspire
software but do not have a Promethean Board in their teaching space.
Due to the variety of prior experiences with Promethean technologies, as well as
varying levels of access to hardware, differentiated training materials and support
systems are needed. Those individuals who desire greater support may complete all
training under the direct supervision of technology leaders. Those who desire greater
independence may complete the majority of training in their classrooms instead.

M Measurable
Technology Surveys in August and May (Appendix B), along
with LRS Questionnaires (Appendix C) at each training session
will provide pre- and post-test data and measure participants’
ability to use specific tools and complete related tasks.
A Attainable
Participants will have 5 hours of independent work time during
training sessions.
 Content within training modules for Novice Users (1, 2, 3, 12)
is expected to take about two hours but new users are likely
to move slowly through the material.
 Content within training modules for Intermediate Users (1, 3,
4, 7, 12) is expected to take over two hours and most will
likely have time to spare for additional practice or other
modules.
 Advanced Users would need all the training time and more,
to complete all content in related modules, but most
advanced users will likely know much of that content already.
It is expected that many advanced users will be able to focus
on the LRS tutorial (Module 5), design principles, flipchart
creation, and advanced techniques during training sessions.
R Realistic Only those teachers with access to Promethean technologies
(hardware, software, handheld devices) will participate in

Promethean Training Sessions. Promethean technologies are
available in their classrooms and it is expected that teachers
use them with increasing regularity and complexity over time.
T Timely
Promethean Boards have been newly installed in most
participants’ classrooms. With rolling installations, Promethean
technologies have been available in other classrooms for one
year or less.
Planned Activities: September Half Day In-Service
1. Needs Assessment
In early August, when district mailings are sent to staff, the link to an online
Technology Training Needs Assessment: (see Appendix B) will be included.
Those teachers with greater experience using ActivInspire may choose to
volunteer to serve as tech support for the September and/or November training
sessions.
2. Technology Coach Meeting
In late August, district technology staff members meet to review procedures and
training materials and assign staff members and volunteer technology leaders to
training groups. Staff members who do not submit surveys will be placed in
groups based on expected levels of previous experience. Staff will determine
building-specific set up and equipments needs for large group presentations and
small group break out sessions.
3. Training Session (3 hours)
a. Large Group Presentation: (15 minutes)
District technology staff present overview of the day’s activities: Three
Tiers of Users/Goals (Novice, Intermediate, Advanced), Web-Based
Modules (http://pbtraining.weebly.com/index.html), Supports, and Timeline
for the day’s activities.
b. Break Out Sessions: (2.5 hours plus 15-minute break)
i. Novice users and those in need of greater support, remain in large
group space and use district Netbooks with ActivInspire installed,

during work time. Building Technology Coaches will be on hand for
whole group direct instruction and individual support as needed.
ii. Those with more experience or in need of minimal support, adjourn
to a classroom with a Promethean Board and LRS devices. Staff
use district Netbooks, with ActivInspire installed, and begin work
with volunteer technology leaders on hand to provide help as
needed.
iii. Remaining staff work on training modules in their classrooms.
c. Debriefing and Next Steps: (30 minutes)
i. Staff members reconvene to debrief the day’s activities – what went
well, questions, glitches, etc.
ii. Encourage staff to continue using modules to review newly learned
skills and information and look over other modules, as able, prior to
the November In-Service. It is expected that some staff will choose
to continue working on training modules while others will be less
interested in using personal time to continue training.
iii. Complete self-paced question set using ActivExpressions
(Appendix C).
iv. Participants complete district Staff Development Evaluation Form.
Planned Activities: November Half Day In-Service
1. Survey Information
In September, technology staff will review module surveys and LRS responses to
determine if revisions will be made to training materials, whole group activities, or
assignment of staff to training groupings.
2. Technology Coach Meeting
Prior to November In-Service, district technology staff meet to review procedures
and training materials and re-evaluate assignment of staff members and
volunteer technology leaders to training groups. Staff review building-specific set
up and equipment needs for large group presentations and small group break out

sessions and make adjustments as needed for the next training session.
3. Training Session (3 hours)
a. Large Group Presentation: (15 minutes)
District technology staff will present an overview of the day’s activities:
Goals, Activities, Web-Based Modules, Supports, and Timeline for the
day’s activities.
b. Break Out Sessions: (2.5 hours plus 15-minute break)
As before, staff members with greater experience and/or in need of less
support with adjourn to an alternate location. Those in need of greater
support remain in large group space and use district Netbooks, with
ActivInspire installed, to access training materials. Building Technology
Coaches and volunteer technology leaders will be on hand for individual
support as needed.
c. Debriefing and Next Steps: (30 minutes)
i. Staff reconvenes to debrief the day’s activities.
ii. Encourage staff to continue using modules to review and reinforce
newly learned skills and information. Preview end-of-year survey in
which participants evaluate their current level of functioning as it
pertains to module content.
iii. Complete self-paced question set using ActivExpressions
(Appendix B).
iv. Participants complete district Staff Development Evaluation Form.
Expected Outcomes
With ongoing access to training materials, and the availability of related
technology resources and tech support, it is expected that participants will experience
growth in their ability to use Promethean technologies effectively in their classroom
instruction during the first half of the year and maintain that growth in the latter half of
the year. Those teachers who are more self-directed learners and engaged in
Promethean learning tasks, will become increasingly proficient as the year goes on. By

the end of the school year it is expected that all teachers who have access to
ActivInspire software and LRS devices will feel comfortable with those tasks listed in the
SMART Goals above, as evidenced by End of Year Technology Survey results.
Measuring Participants’ Learning
Staff Development Evaluation Forms from September and November Training
Sessions, along with the August Technology Needs Assessment and the Year End
Technology Survey (Appendix B), will be used to collect information about participants’
learning. The Staff Development Evaluation Form is a standard paper document whose
use is required for all district staff development activities.
Pre- and Post- Assessments
The pre-assessment is an online survey - Technology Needs Assessment -
which participants will be asked to complete at the beginning of the school year.
Identical questions will be asked in the End of Year Survey, which will also be online.
Online format will allow for easy tabulation and reporting of results for this large staff.
Data will be disaggregated with pre- and post- percentages listed by school and text
responses will be listed. District and school information will be shared with
administrators and technology staff members. Any teacher-specific information that is
received (those who put their names on the survey) will be shared with building
technology staff. Information from the End of Year Technology Survey will be used to
evaluate effectiveness of current year’s staff development and will be used to guide
future offerings.
Training Module Surveys
Effectiveness of individual training modules, as well as learner time on task, will
be collected via online surveys that are included in each of the 12 training modules.
Information received will be used to revise training activities.
Self-Paced Question Set at September/November Training Sessions

As part of debriefing activities, participants will use Promethean’s Learning
Response System to answer a set of self-paced questions (see Appendix C). Questions
relate to technical difficulties they experienced, how independently they worked, which
modules they worked on, what level of support they would like in future, what learning
they feel comfortable using in their classroom right away. In November, an additional
question relates to how confident they feel about using interactive flipcharts and LRS
devices in their classroom. With anonymous responses and expected 100% return rate,
it is hoped that responses are an accurate reflection of current levels of functioning.
Staff Development Evaluation Form
Per union contract, all participants will complete the district’s standard Staff
Development Evaluation Form in which they evaluate the professional development
activities: best features, presenter knowledge, applicability to classroom, and
suggestions for improvement.
Facilitating Return of Learning to the Classroom
Online format of training materials means that learning can continue well beyond
the six hours of onsite training and those materials can be modified to meet evolving
needs. Further, each building has a Technology Coach who is available to model
lessons, team teach, and provide additional training and support as needed. Surveys
embedded within training modules will facilitate ongoing revisions to training materials.
Measuring Outcome on Student Learning
While it is difficult to assess the affect of one aspect of teaching and learning on
student learning, there are ways to measure impact of Promethean technologies:
 Observational Data: Student time on task/engagement during learning activities
in which Promethean technologies are used.
 Anecdotal Evidence: Do kids “get it” quicker/better now than when the same
content was covered in previous years? Progress through the curriculum – are

students learning it better and retain it longer? Less review and re-teaching
means more new content.
 Student Reporting: Information will be gathered via surveys at the beginning and
end of the year for grades 3 and up. Questions: How many times each week is
the Promethean Board used for interactive lessons (every day, almost every day,
several times a week, about once a week, less than once a week)? The same
question will also be asked in relation to the LRS. Data collection for other tech
and district initiatives (laptop carts, for example) can also be included in order to
minimize amount of instructional time used for data collection.

Promethean/ActivInspire Training - Home
This Web site is the home to Training Modules for Promethean's ActivInspire software, interactive
whiteboard, and Learner Response System. Developed for teachers in a K-8 public school district with
Intranet-based resources, the majority of content in the training modules is applicable to any ActivInspire
classroom.
Online tutorials and training guides that were developed by Promethean may be accessed through the
Promethean Planet Web site and links are provided. It is expected that users who access those materials
have licensed copies of ActivInspire software installed on the computer(s) used to complete this training.
Training modules may be completed in any order though skills learned in one module are often an
extension of content from prior modules. Novice users would benefit from completing Modules 1 and 2
before moving on to other topics. More experienced users may find that reading the Module Overview on
each page will provide information that will allow them to select modules of interest.
Upon completion of each module, you will find a very brief survey. Completing the surveys will allow us to
evaluate the effectiveness of the training modules and will impact future revisions.

Module 2: Using the Promethean Board
Overview:
In this module, learners will practice at-the-board skills including calibration, using the toolbox, board
controls and set-up, and troubleshooting. For this module, learners (alone or in pairs) should complete
each task at the board. Completion of this module is expected to take about 20 minutes - minus
discussion.
Tasks:
1. Calibrating the Promethean Board
- Calibrating the board aligns the pen with the on-screen cursor/mouse.
- There are three methods for beginning the calibration process.
1) Hover pen over white flame in the upper left corner of the board until the flame turns blue.
2) Right-click ActivManager icon in bottom right corner of monitor screen and select 'Calibrate.'
3) From dashboard, select 'Configure' then select 'Calibrate' from the menu.

Promethean Training
Clicking on the Desktop Tools icon in your Toolbox will hide the ActivInpire window and
a circular Desktop Tools icon will appear on your desktop. Mouse over the Desktop
Tools icon on your desktop to access various features.
Clicking on the Desktop Annotate icon in your Toolbox will hide the ActivInspire window
but your Toolbox remains visible. Any tools that you would use in a flipchart are now
available to use with any computer application. Annotations appear in an overlay layer
on top of other content, not in the application itself.
Module 3: Desktop Tools
Overview:
In this module, learners be introduced to and practice using Desktop Tools. Topics include: Accessing
Tools, Wonderwheel, On-Screen Keyboard, More Tools, and Desktop Annotation. Desktop Tools provide the
means to make any application (i.e., Word document, curriculum PDF) interactive and also enable you to
easily bring outside content into a flipchart. Completion of this module is expected to take about 20
minutes.
Tasks:
1. Access Tools
Create Desktop Flipchart: To use Desktop Tool and Desktop Annotation, ActivInspire must be open.
Many find that having an empty document saved on the desktop is a quick and easy way to have
ActivInspire readily available.
Commonly Used Tools: Two widely used features of ActivInspire are Desktop Tools and Desktop
Annotation. Click on icons in your toolbox or access through Menu/Tools. Desktop Annotate can also
be opened with a keyboard shortcut.

Overview:
In this module, learners will be introduced to the Promethean Learner Response System, component
parts, benefits, and possible classroom applications. Learners will also be provided an overview of
procedures for creating questions, using ActiVote/ActivExpression handheld devices to respond, and
viewing results. Completion of this module is expected to take about 20 minutes.

introduce you to the Promethean Learner Response System, its component parts and possible
classroom uses. Click on the image below to view this tutorial.
This ten-minute video walks you through the procedures for creating a question using the Questions
Wizard, adding page/question content, editing size and alignment, running a vote, and viewing
results. This tutorial uses ActiVotes but the process is much the same for ActivExpressions.

In this module, learners will complete of a series online tutorials on a variety of topics: Registering and
Renaming Devices, ExpressPoll, Questions Wizard, Viewing Results, and Displaying Results. Completion of
this module is expected to take at least 40 minutes.
Task: Complete Promethean's Learner Response Systems Course
This self-paced course is comprised of a series of tutorials which will guide the learner through the various
aspects of integrating the LRS in classroom instruction. The optional assessment at the end will allow the
learner to gauge his/her level of understanding.

Take a few minutes to explore. You can preview flipcharts within the Web site so there is no need to
download any documents.
3. Explore Flipcharts on the Internet
Use your search engine of choice (i.e., Google, Yahoo, etc.) and enter your search terms. Note: Entering
the terms 'Promethean Flipchart' on Google will give you about 330,000 hits. There are some good
resources listed but more specific terms will narrow your results. With your partner, continue to evaluate
flipcharts based on principles of good design: simplicity and CARP - contrast, alignment, repetition and
proximity.
4. Locate Flipcharts on D109 Intranet
D109 staff log on to the district Intranet then click on 'Collaborative Team Portal' in the sidebar. Next,
click on your grade level/content area. In the sidebar, mouseover '_____ Resources' and select
'Promethean Flipcharts' from the flyout menu. As you move forward with Flipchart modification and
creation, it would be good to know what resources have already been created for your grade
level/subject area.
5. Discussion
Working with a partner, discuss a few of the Flipcharts you found. Remember, we are considering
design only, not subject matter content. Not sure what to look for? Think: CARP. Keep in mind what
you learned from the blog post above, "the visual design should complement the learning experience
and not compete with it."

In this module, learners will practice editing skills and use them to modify a flipchart. Completion of this

components) to provide sufficient content for you to edit.

View this nine-minute tutorial on using the Camera Tool - a very useful resource for bringing content
into a Flipchart.
3. Editing Practice:
Note: If you need a refresher on using the ActivInspire tools below, you will find a walk-thru flipchart in
Module 2, Task 2.
Use Design Mode: At the top of the flipchart you will see a small square with a snowflake inside it. If
the square is blue, you are in presentation mode - items that are locked or part of the background
cannot be changed. If the square is orange, you are in design mode - everything in the flipchart is
editable. If the square is blue, click on it and it will change to orange (that's what we want).
Edit Text: Click on the "T" in the toolbox then click inside a textbox. Edit text as you would in a word
processing document: change size, color, make it bold/italic etc., modify content/wording. Note: See
Module 2 to review of how Toolbox tools are used.
Re-size Images/Objects: Click on an image or object/shape and you will see a strip of icons appear
along with "handles" on the corners and long edges. Grab a handle to re-size. Adjustments made
using the handle on the bottom right - the circle with a slash through it - will retain the aspect ratio
(it won't look stretched or squished).
Modify Images/Objects: Click on an image or object/shape. Look at the icon strip, if the "Group" icon
is lit up, click on it. That will ungroup shapes which will allow you more ways to manipulate them. Try
each of the icons and see what they do.
Camera Tool: Watch the ActivTips video "Camera Magic." Go to ActivTips and scroll down in the
player window - Camera Magic is about two-thirds of the way down in the list. Next, use the camera
tool to take pictures of things in your flipchart and to bring images in from your desktop or Internet
browser. Try out each of the five options: Area, Point-to-Point, Freehand, Window, and Full Screen
Snapshots.
Delete and Re-Order Flipchart Pages: To delete a page, simply click on its thumbnail in the Page
Browser then press the 'Delete' key. Another option is to click on the icon in the upper right corner of
the thumbnail and select 'Delete' from the menu. To re-order pages, click and drag them to where
you want them to go. As you drag the page and heavy black line will indicate the position - just drop
it where you want it.

curricular content, design principles and building in interactive components. Easy "fixes" are adjusting
colors and size for better viewing and making sure visual elements (clip art, backgrounds) enhance

Sketch it out. Jot down ideas and/or create a simple paper-and-pencil draft of how you want your

Gather resources. If district-owned curriculum materials will be used there are often digital copies

OpenClipArt.com. Bookmark Web sites and online resources that will be used or paste links into

Add content to your flipchart.
Save early and save often. There is nothing more frustrating than losing a document you've spent a
lot of time on. Organizing your flipcharts into folders will make them easier to find when you need
them.
Click on Object Browser to see layers. Every image, button, or text box you put on the page is a
separate object and sometimes they get hidden behind each other. In the Objects Browser, click on
an item in the list to see where it is on the flipchart page (handles will appear). Drag list items up and
down to place them on top of, or underneath, other objects. Anything higher on the list will be on top
of those things that are lower on the list. For a review of the various browsers, see the browsers
tutorial in Module 7.
Click on the Notes Browser and add notes to each page (i.e., overview, interactivity, suggested
activities). For flipcharts you will be sharing, this will be very helpful for others who use your flipchart.
When you use the flipchart in the future it will refresh your memory.
Edit content, design, and functionality. Use ActivInspire's spell check feature to check individual pages
or the entire document. On pages with interactive components, make sure you lock those
components that you want to keep in place. Also, do a run-through at the board to make sure
everything works the way you want it to.
Use rubric (Step 2 above) to evaluate your flipchart and make final edits as needed.
4. Share Your Flipchart
Before sharing outside of your school district, double-check district policies.
Copyright protected images and content should not be shared. Exceptions: If you hold the copyright
you may share as you wish use Creative Commons to license your work. Flipchart content that is
derived from district-owned resources (science book, for example) may be shared within the district.
Many districts have an Intranet in which teachers may share resources amongst themselves. D109
teachers are encouraged to upload flipcharts to their Collaborative Team Portal.
Flipcharts can also be uploaded to Promethean Planet. Again, please check your district's policies
before doing so.

Module 9: More Fun with Tools
Overview:
In this module, learners will be introduced to and practice using a variety of tools and techniques: Math
Tools, Other Tools, customizing your toolbox, and advanced techniques (containers, restrictors, and
embedding media/links).
Tasks:
1. Explore Math Tools
Use tools to model and practice measurement.
You will find all the math tools in the toolbox when using the Mathematics Profile and tools can be
placed in the toolbox for any profile by customizing your toolbox (see #4 below).
Ruler: Click on the ruler in the toolbox or tools menu to add it to the page and activate the ruler's
menu. Click on the ruler's menu icon to modify attributes: Top Scale, Bottom Scale (mm, cm, in,
none), and Show Angle (checked, unchecked). Mouseover the rule to activate move/rotate capability
and use handles to shorten or lenthen the ruler. To remove the ruler from the page, click on the small
menu icon and select 'Close.'
Protractor: Click on the protractor in the toolbox or tools menu to add it to the page and activate the
protractor's menu. Click on the small menu icon to modify attributes: Full Protractor, Half Protractor,
Arc, Closed Arc, and Show Angle. Adjust size and rotation as with the ruler. Mouseover curved edge
to adjust size. To remove the protractor from the page, click on its menu and select 'Close.'
Compass: Add compass to page and modify attributes via menu icon as with the ruler and protractor.
Use pen modifiers to select color and thickness then click and drag pencil lead to rotate compass and
draw.
Calculator: Click on the calculator icon to open the gadget. The calculator does not become part of
the flipchart.
Dice Roller: Click on the die icon to open the gadget. Like the calculator, it does not become part of
the flipchart. Use drop down menu and slide to adjust number of dice and speed. Click "roll" to roll
the dice and 'Output to flipchart' to send that number to the current page of your flipchart. The
number will appear with whatever text format settings (font, size, color) are currently selected.
The dice roller and calculator are accessible outside of ActivInspire via the Desktop Tools
Wonderwheel.

Magic Ink: View the "Eraser vs. Ink" video in ActivTips (it's about two-thirds of the way down this list
in the player window). Magic Ink is a very dynamic tool for flipchart interactivity!
Revealer: The revealer allows you to cover part of a flipchart page without altering its content. The
revealer can be opened from the top, bottom, or either side to reveal content underneath. Revealer
color and animation speed can be modified in Edit/Profiles (Authoring)/Settings/Effects. Click on the
color cube to change the color: select a color from the palette or use the Color Picker (eyedropper) to
choose a color that matches your flipchart page or "World" color.
Spotlight: The Spotlight masks page content allowing just a portion to be seen. Unlike the revealer,
that portion may be anywhere on the page. The Spotlight can be circular or square and the size can
be altered by clicking and draging the border. A number of attributes can be modified, including
border color and thickness, in Edit/Profiles (Authoring)/Settings/Effects.
Use the Properties Browser to add/remove Page Tools in your flipchart. Steps: 1) Navigate to desired
page in flipchart, 2) Open Properties Browser/Tools, 3) Select revealer or spotlight from Page Tools
drop down menu, 4) Select desired Revealer/Spotlight Mode, 5) Go to the next page in the flipchart
and select desired page tools. "Tools Off" will remove any tools that were on the previous page. "As
Before" will retain tools used in the previous page. Default is "As Before."
Handwriting Recognition: This allows you to "type" at the board without using the onscreen
keyboard. Handwritten text is converted to typed text and can be edited (color, font, size) on the
spot, as you would any other text.
Shape Recognition: Drawing made with the pen tool will be converted to a standard shape.
Clock: The clock can be used to see the current time and can also be used to count up or count down
during an activity. Time can be displayed in analog or digital form (or both) with or without a second
hand, 12 or 24 hours. Clock size can be adjusted and the clock tool is one of the desktop tools
available outside of ActivInspire. Click on the down arrows to use the clock to count up or down a
desired number of hours/minutes/seconds.
4. Customize your Toolbox
Now that you have had a chance to explore a number of tools, it's time to customize your toolbox.
Deleting unused tools (clutter) will make it easy for you and your students to locate the tools you
need and adding often used tools will eliminate the need for navigating menus during instruction.
By default, ActivInspire has five profiles: Authoring, At the Board, Languages, Mathematics, and
Media.

You can use the Screen Recording and Sound Recording tools while at the computer or at the board.
If you are recording at your computer and it has a built-in microphone, no other equipment will be
needed.
If you are recording at the board or computer without a built-in mic, you will need a microphone. A
headset microphone, or any other computer microphone with an 1/8" (3.5mm) mini-connector will
work. At the board, plug the microphone into the jack that is labeled "MIC to PC." A USB microphone
can be used as well. Plug the cord into the USB port on the Promethean Board and the microphone
will work as it would if plugged into the computer's USB port.
If you don't want to see the recording tools during video playback, you can hide them. Select
'Edit/Profiles/Settings' then 'Recordings.' Next, check the box that says "Hide screen recorder toolbox
whilst recording."
Select 'Fullscreen recording' to capture the entire flipchart.
Select 'Sound recording' for audio only. Before recording, you will need to tell ActivInspire where you
want the completed recording to be stored. Select 'Edit/Profiles/Settings' then 'Recordings.' Next,
check on the drop down menu that says 'Sound recordings'. If you select 'Add to flipchart' the sound
button will appear on that page. If you select 'save to disk' the audio file will be saved on your
computer. Clicking 'both' will send the audio to both locations.
3. Practice Making Screen and Sound Recordings
At the board or a computer, practice making screen and sound recordings. Remember, you can access
the recording tools through 'Tools/More Tools/Sound recorder and Screen recorder.
If you are using a PC, the file will be saved as .avi. If using a Mac, the file will be saved as .mov.
When you have finished a recording, open the movie/audio file so you can see how it turned out.
Note: Sound quality of your recording will only be as good as the microphone you are using. If you
have more than one type available, consider trying different ones to see which gives you acceptable
sound quailty. If you don't want to pick up room sounds a headset microphone will work well. If your
goal is to include classroom sounds, a desktop microphone may serve your purposes well.
4. Sharing a Screen Recording
If you will be uploading the movie file or linking it from a Web page/blog, consider providing a link to
a player: DivX Plus Software for Windows or DivX 7 for Mac is the best way to watch your DivX AVI
files. MOV files can be viewed with Quicktime: http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/
Screen Recordings, like any other digital file, can be shared by sending them as an e-mail
attachment, putting them in a shared network folder, or in a digital drop box.
Screen Recordings, like any other video file, can be uploaded to YouTube and shared via a link or by
embedding. For school use, it is recommended that YouTube videos be shared with students and
shown in class via SafeShare.TV link (http://www.safeshare.tv/) instead of accessing the video
directly from YouTube.

Module 11: ActivInspire Without a Promethean Board
Overview:
In this module, learners will find tips and tricks for taking advantage of Promethean technologies in
classrooms that do not have a Promethean Board installed. Completion of this module is expect to take
about 20 minutes.
Technology Decision-Making:
When school districts determine which teaching locations will be outfitted with technology resources many
factors are considered, not the least of which is available funding. If your classroom is one that does not
have a board, it could be due to any number of factors. Perhaps you are slated to get a board in the
future, but your classroom is not in the "first wave." Perhaps you teach in a location in which equipment
security and safety is an issue, so there will never be Promethean Board in that location. Never fear, there
are a great many features of ActivInspire that can be used without a Promethean Board!
Tasks:
1. Software
ActivInspire software may be downloaded from the Promethean Planet Web site:
The free version of the software comes with basic tools. Full features may be accessed if/when the
software is registered.
Schools that purchase Promethean Boards and ActivInspire software are licensed to install the
software on multiple computers. For those attending the on-site training, your building Technology
Coach can provide you with a registration code that will unlock the full features of ActivInspire.
With ActivInspire installed on your classroom computer or a laptop, and a projector at your disposal,
you're ready to go!
2. At the Computer
Authoring and modifying Flipcharts is typically done at the computer so those tasks are identical
whether you have a board or not.
The Learning Response System is used exactly the same way with or without a board. Student
responses go to a hub that is attached to the computer - the screen is for viewing only so a projected
image on a "regular" screen works just as well as a board for this. Using the LRS is a powerful tool as
ongoing formative evaluation allows instruction to be modified on the spot to meet the learning needs
of students. If there are Promethean Boards in your building there are likely several sets of ActiVotes
and ActivExpressions as well. Share :)
The screen recorder can be used equally well with or without a board. As long as there is some
means of input - keyboard, mouse, ActivSlate - audio and visual content can be captured.
3. At the Screen Work-Arounds
The author of this training site used the ActivInspire software in the classroom for six months prior to
having a board installed and found several work-arounds. Here are some possibilities:

Use the Mouse: Using the mouse on the computer parallel's what the ActivPen would do on the
board. Instead of standing at the board, you or your students could to be at the computer next to the
board - still interactive and still viewable by the whole class.
Magic Mallet: Have students use a Magic Mallet, or other non-metalic pointing device, to 'move'
things on the screen. Yes, they will quickly figure out that it is you using the mouse to follow the path
that the Magic Mallet travels, but a bit of silliness helps make it fun. The students' actions with the
Magic Mallet (pointer) won't actually control the software - wherever they made the Magic Mallet go,
you will use the mouse to follow the same pathway. Even with a board installed, keeping the Magic
Mallet handy will make reaching to the top of the board quite easy (a very inexpensive alternative to
an ActivWand).
Drag and Drop: Using Drag and Drop instead of writing with the pen tool allows students to easily
manipulate content from the screen, using a pointer or Magic Mallet. If you have a fill-in-the-blank
activity, include a word bank so students can "drag" their choice onto the line.
Text Tool: Are you working with text? Instead of writing on a Promethean Board using the pen tool,
add a text box and type in the content.
4. Challenges and Opportunities
There are obvious limitations if you don't have a board to work with but you would be surprised at how
much you can actually do. You will likely find that some learning activities will still work much better with a
chalkboard or document camera. Being open to finding ways to include Promethean interactivity in your
lessons will open up learning opportunities for your students. Interactivity and student engagement may
not be as high as it would be with a Promethean Board, but it will likely be greater than if you didn't use
the software at all. Should you have the opportunity to teach with a Promethean Board in the future you
will have provided yourself with a great head start and it will certainly ease the way once the board is
installed.
5. Practice and Discussion
Using the ActivInspire software, projector and a pointer, work with a partner to practice following a
Magic Mallet (pointer). Take turns with one partner navigating a Flipchart while the other uses the
mouse to complete the actions.
Locate some completed Flipcharts (see links in Module 7). With your partner, discuss how they could
be modified for use in a board-less teaching space.
Discuss: What subject areas or topics do you think would lend themselves to using the ActivInspire
software sans board?

Module 12: Exploring Promethean Planet
Overview:
In this module, you will be introduced to the resources and information available on Promethean Planet,
the support site for Promethean hardware and software. If you completed earlier modules in this series
you will have seen the site already - this is your chance to explore more deeply. If you are new to
Promethean Planet, this module provides some structure for exploring a rich resource. Completion of this
module is expected to take at least 15 minutes.

This two-minute introduction to the Promethean Planet Web site provides an overview of various
resources that may be access through the site.
Explore the Web Site:
1. Register
If you are not yet a registered user, take the time to register now - it is a very quick process. Those who
are attending on-site training are encouraged to use their school e-mail address when they create their
account.
2. Menu
Hover your mouse over the horizontal menu bar at the top of the page to see sub-categories and related

3. Lessons
If you haven't had a chance to explore the lesson flipcharts, take a few minutes to see what's there. Select
Resources/Resource Type/Lessons. Filters in the sidebar allow you to limit search terms and entering
keywords in the search bar will narrow your search even further. Look for the drop down menu in the
upper left corner of the results window - you can sort results.

Lessons are age and subject specific flipcharts that have been created and uploaded by Promethean
Planet members. Most flipcharts can be downloaded free of charge and all can be previewed in the Web
page. Those attending on-site training and are using red Netbooks, are asked to wait until they are at
their classroom computer to download files. Previewing flipcharts is a great way to get a feel for the ways
in which interactive components can be incorporated. Below you will find links to a few lessons that are
particularly well done. You will note that they follow the design principles discussed in Module 6, utilize a
variety of tools, and contain multiple opportunities for student interaction.

A wonderful feature of the Promethean Planet Web site is the ability to search for Lessons by State
Standard: Resources/Search By State Standard then use drop down menus. While any good flipchart will
help engage learners, alignment with district curriculum is of primary importance.
4. Resource Packs
Resource Packs are downloadable files with backgrounds and images you can use in your own flipcharts.
Select Resources/Resource Types/Resource Pack. As with Lessons, filters in the sidebar allow you to
narrow your search and you can sort results. Seasonal as well as subject matter specific Resource Packs
are available.
5. ActivTips
ActivTips are a series of short how-to videos that demonstrate the use of various tools and features of the
software. Select Professional Development/ActivTips. On the ActivTips page you can scroll through the list
of topics and play the video right on the page. You can also click on the link to subscribe to the ActivTips
podcast and get past episode of interest and have new episodes delivered to your iTunes. Take a few
minutes to explore ActivTips.
6. Support
Hardware: Newest drivers are available along with technical information allowing those using
ActivInspire on their personal computers to keep software up-to-date. D109 teachers, all updates for
school equipment are done for you - do not download anything please.
User Guides and Docs: Many of the documents linked within these training modules can be found on
Promethean Planet. They provide excellent text description and visual support for using ActivInspire.
Quickstart Guides are a handy for novice users - they are brief and provide quick reference for
commonly used tools.
Software: Find the newest information here and download the Personal Edition of ActivInspire for
home use. Check with your school's Technology Coordinator to see if registration codes are available -
this will enable you to turn your Personal Edition into the Professional Edition at no charge.
