The space shuttle program began in 1981 and has achieved many records and accomplishments over 30 years, carrying people into orbit and building the International Space Station. As NASA's first reusable spacecraft, the shuttles pushed boundaries through advanced technology and human effort. Thousands of people contributed to mission success and the goal of space exploration. Unlike other spacecraft, shuttles launched like rockets, served as orbiting space habitats and labs, and landed like airplanes, launching and retrieving satellites and enabling servicing of the Hubble Space Telescope. Shuttle research advanced understanding of Earth and space.
