UTILIZING NETWORKING AND
COMMUNICATIONS TECHNOLOGIES
FOR LEARNING

2. MEETING DATES
Synchronous Meeting Dates
We meet twice this summer synchronously in OpenQwaq, to
begin the semester, then to view your final project presentations.
The meeting dates are:
• Wednesday May 27
• Wednesday July 29
All meetings will be held in OpenQwaq ITC-5330 forum, starting at
7:30 PM

3. DISCUSSION GROUPS
Create your own discussion groups (3 to 4 members) for
exploring telecom discussions.
When: Now through end of June
Who: As a group (your choice of 3-4 members)
What:
• In your group, discover telecom and social networking tools.
• Post telecom resources and discuss potential instructional
applications
• Find resources and discuss online identity and safety.
Where: In Google Docs and our Facebook group.
Due: See the course schedule in AsULearn for more info and
specific due dates in June.

4. DISCUSSIONS
What:
• Create group & Google Doc (submit in AsULearn) – by June 1
• Explore potential telecom and social network tools – by June 7
• Issues and resources related to Online Identity – by June 14
• Issues and resources related to Online Safety – by June 21
Procedures:
• Work with your group on a shared Google Doc each week
• Post a couple of your unique findings (as a group) to Facebook
• Take turns as individuals posting to Facebook for your group

6. TOUR SCHOOL/DISTRICT
SERVER ROOM
When: Now through June 28
What: Arrange with local personnel to take a tour of a school or
district wiring server room/closet
Who: Individual or group (e.g., from same school/district)
Submit: An overview and outline (using tools of your choice) of
the school/district telecommunication facilities, support and other
relevant information. Please include photos, media, and other
materials.
Where: Submit overview presentation in AsULearn and
OpenQwaq
Due: June 28, in OpenQwaq and submit in AsULearn

LEARNING
NETWORK

8. DEVELOPING YOUR PERSONAL
LEARNING NETWORK (PLN)
When: June 29 to July 12
Who: As an individual
What:
• Explore topics on Personal Learning Networks (PLN).
• Post your comments on strengths and weaknesses, and
educational uses of PLN, on the Facebook group (from July 1
to 12).
• Develop a plan for beginning and developing your PLN,
become a member of at least two online communities relevant
to you professionally. Remember: This is an individual
project.
Due: Post your PLN plan and implementation project on the wall
in OpenQwaq on or before Sunday, July 12.

10. TEACHING WITH
TELECOMMUNICATIONS
When: Now to July 29
What:
Choose either option 1 or 2 below (work in groups or alone)
1. Develop and use (if possible) learning activities that employ a
telecom technology to help students learn some content or skill.
2. Develop a distance education course using web-based, MOOC,
video conference, virtual environment, or a combination of
asynchronous and/or synchronous telecom technologies.
For either option, include a summary of the unit/lessons, description
of the project, and example telecommunication tools.
Due: Post project on the wall in OpenQwaq on or before Sunday,
July 26. Present in class on Wednesday, July 29.

12. GETTING STARTED IN CLASS
• Signup for our class Facebook group, linked from AsULearn site
(wait to be approved)
• Choose a discussion group (3 to 4 members)
• Create a Google Doc to use for your group activities
• One group member post your Google Doc URL in AsULearn
• Begin to search, explore, and discuss telecommunications and
social networking tools for use in education.
