Homily: The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity Sunday 2024.docxJames Knipper
Countless volumes have been written trying to explain the mystery of three persons in one true God, leaving us to resort to metaphors such as the three-leaf clover to try to comprehend the Divinity. Many of us grew up with the quintessential pyramidal Trinity structure of God at the top and Son and Spirit in opposite corners. But what if we looked at this ‘mystery’ from a different perspective? What if we shifted our language of God as a being towards the concept of God as love? What if we focused more on the relationship within the Trinity versus the persons of the Trinity? What if stopped looking at God as a noun…and instead considered God as a verb? Check it out…

The Book of Joshua is the sixth book in the Hebrew Bible and the Old Testament, and is the first book of the Deuteronomistic history, the story of Israel from the conquest of Canaan to the Babylonian exile.
In Jude 17-23 Jude shifts from piling up examples of false teachers from the Old Testament to a series of practical exhortations that flow from apostolic instruction. He preserves for us what may well have been part of the apostolic catechism for the first generation of Christ-followers. In these instructions Jude exhorts the believer to deal with 3 different groups of people: scoffers who are "devoid of the Spirit", believers who have come under the influence of scoffers and believers who are so entrenched in false teaching that they need rescue and pose some real spiritual risk for the rescuer. In all of this Jude emphasizes Jesus' call to rescue straying sheep, leaving the 99 safely behind and pursuing the 1.

Examples from Philippi
Philippi was the city where the church was first
established in Europe. There was no more strategic place
in all of Europe. From Philippi the gospel would be able to
quickly spread to all of Europe.
Paul visited Philippi on the second missionary jour-
ney perhaps around 52 AD. Paul had seen in a vision a
man of Macedonia pleading with Paul to come over into
Macedonia and help them. When Luke writes of their
journey in Acts 16 he calls Philippi “the first of the district”
ASV. Other translations render it as the chief or the fore-
most city. The former translation suggests s that Philippi
is the first city they came to on their inward journey. If this
is correct then brother Coffman adds, “from the stand-
point of Christianity, this is not merely the first of the dis-
trict, but the first of Europe, for it was here that the gospel
message was planted by means of the conversions re-
lated in this chapter.” The latter translation suggests that
Philippi was the most important city in that district. Either
rendition is possible.
William Barclay pointed out that there were three
people who were of importance to Paul’s work in Philippi.
The first of these was Lydia, a woman from Thyatira. It
has been suggested that it is a bit of irony that while Paul
was not allowed to go and preach in Asia, that his first
convert in Europe was a woman of Asia. Thyatira
was a Roman colony known for its manufacturing and
commercial center. There were more trade guilds in
Thyatira than in any other Asian city. Later Thyatira would
be one of the seven churches to whom Jesus would write
(Rev. 2:18-29).Lydia is described as a seller of purple.
The purple dye came from the small gland in the neck of
the murex, a mollusk. Since the cost of such dye and the
cloth colored by it was outrageously high (Barclay said
that one pound of cotton dyed purple cost about $60.00),
this meant that the wearer of purple would be limited
mostly to kings and queens. From what is said
Lydia must have prospered greatly from her trade.
Luke also describes Lydia as one who
“worshipped God.” The word translated here as
“worshiped” means “To revere, stressing the feeling of
awe or devotion” (Vine, p. 235). Some believe that Lydia
was a “God-fearer.” This would be a Gentile that believes
in God but has not completely been converted. Others
believe that she was a proselyte to the Jewish religion.
Though she is far away from her home, she still
engages in the worship of God along with her household.
Her household was probably the other women that are
mentioned here who are involved in this worship. Thus
Lydia willingly gave up an opportunity to make more
money when she chose to worship God on the Sabbath
rather than using that time to sell her wares.
The Lord opened her heart and she listened to
what Paul said. Since faith comes by hearing and hearing
by the word of God, Lydia came to believe in Jesus. And
in keeping with what Jesus had said in giving the
Great Commission, “He that believeth and is bap-
tized shall be saved” (Mk. 16:16), Lydia responded by
being baptized. Thus Lydia is an example of those who
are well prepared to receive the gospel!
