This study investigated the relationship between water fluoridation, socioeconomic status, and tooth wear in 14-year-old children in northwest England. The prevalence of tooth wear was compared between children in fluoridated versus non-fluoridated districts. Tooth wear was scored on anterior and molar teeth. The results showed that children in non-fluoridated districts were 1.5 times more likely to have tooth wear compared to children in fluoridated districts. Additionally, fluoridation and using fluoridated toothpaste twice daily provided protection against dental erosion. The risk of tooth wear was also found to increase with greater affluence.

The document examines the relationship between fluoride concentrations in public water supplies and the prevalence and severity of developmental defects of enamel (DDE) among 12-year-old children in Hong Kong in 1983, 1991 and 2001. Standardized photographs of the children's teeth were assessed for DDE. The fluoride concentrations in the water during enamel development of their maxillary incisors were 1.0 ppm in 1983, 0.7 ppm in 1991, and 0.5 ppm in 2001. The study found a decrease in both the prevalence and severity of DDE that corresponded to the reductions in water fluoride concentrations during enamel development.
Why do poor adults rate their oral health
Australia has a high standard of oral health overall, but there are socioeconomic inequalities. Poorer people have higher rates of complete tooth loss. In the 1990s, the oral health of migrants, rural dwellers, and Indigenous Australians received attention. A study used data from 1999 surveys to examine the psychosocial factors associated with both household income and self-rated oral health. It found that poorer adults had poorer oral health and felt less control over their lives with more stress. Health is sensitive to social conditions, so interventions should address socioeconomic position.

Chlorhexidine is the most effective antiplaque agent known. It acts on bacterial cell walls, causing osmotic imbalance, membrane extrusion, and cytoplasm precipitation. As a bactericidal agent at high concentrations and bacteriostatic at lower concentrations found in saliva, it is considered potent. Substantive agents with retention of 25-30% after rinsing have the highest impact by remaining active for hours. Combining mechanical plaque removal with chemical reduction of remaining bacteria provides the greatest efficacy in dental plaque control.

Erosion is the loss or wear of dental hard tissue by acids not caused by bacteria.
Erosion may be caused by intrinsicfactors (e.g., excessive vomiting or acid reflux in case of G.E.R.D) and/or extrinsicv factors (e.g., diet) .
Soft drinks, particularly carbonated sodas ( eg. coca cola,pepsi ) and sports drinks (e.g gatorade), appear to be the most significant extrinsic cause of erosion.
Drinks containing high concentrations of calcium, like milk, may reduce risk of erosion.

- 2. Dental erosion in children and adults is a growing concern in dentistry, especially as it relates to the rising consumption of acidic beverages. Studies reported an increase in the loss of hard dental tissue after the consumption of acidic soft drinks including fruit juices and carbonated beverages.

Periodic application of 5000 ppm fluoride may be beneficial in individuals at risk of acidic erosion associated with soft drink consumptions.
