The document discusses the future of journalism and outlines several trends:
1. Large online platforms like Facebook and Google are increasingly controlling the distribution of news content.
2. Mobile devices are changing how news is created, distributed and consumed on-the-go.
3. The public is playing a more active role as citizen journalists, content creators and commentators.
4. There is a need for news organizations to better curate and verify the large amount of user-generated content and online information.
Looking at how social media is influencing the way we consume news, who can produce and publish news and how these new platforms are influencing journalistic practices
Emerging platforms are using an evocative form of storytelling, called long form or immersive storytelling experiences, to effectively communicate information with readers. Built specifically for digital consumption, these immersive experiences have gained prominence as a result of The New York Times’ enormously successful piece Snow Fall that covered the 2012 Tunnel Creek avalanche. The piece won a Webby award and the author John Branch won the 2013 Pulitzer for feature writing. Snow Fall was praised as “the future of journalism.” But it’s not all positive; Snow Fall garnered heavy criticism too. Read on to find out what the pattern of modern media consumption reveals about the future of journalism.
ONA San Diego presentation on the top 10 trends to watch in 2017 by Tom Mallory of San Diego Union-Tribune and Amy Schmitz Weiss of San Diego State University (Presented Jan. 26, 2017).

Have you fallen victim to Social Media ‘sensationalism’? Find out why this rising phenomenon is causing waves online, and how to navigate the hype to stay ahead of the game in State of Social’s 10th edition!
Lead by Chris Walts, Social Strategy Director at Ogilvy UK, we explore the effect of sensationalism and what it means to marketers. Plus, the latest format updates from all the major platforms and a look at some best-in-class creative from the last quarter.
This presentation was delivered at Media Culture Days at Babeș-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca, Romania, on May 17, 2019. Linda Austin spoke as a Fulbright Specialist on 5 Trends to Watch in Journalism. Those trends include mobile, messaging apps, voice, artificial intelligence and audience. For each, she offered statistics, a case study from a media outlet, and a takeaway. Bonus slides at the end provide links to more reading.
This presentation is all about money. Well, more specifically, the ways that publishers and independent bloggers can combine a sharp focus on serving their market, with the latest ad models, to start making a profit from their internet news operations. The hyperlocal news model is one that certainly appeals to journalists in this market, since they are flooded with national and international news by a government that is attempting to distract the people from the wretched mismanagement and corruption occurring right under their noses...

In a May 9, 2024 paper, Juri Opitz from the University of Zurich, along with Shira Wein and Nathan Schneider form Georgetown University, discussed the importance of linguistic expertise in natural language processing (NLP) in an era dominated by large language models (LLMs).
The authors explained that while machine translation (MT) previously relied heavily on linguists, the landscape has shifted. “Linguistics is no longer front and center in the way we build NLP systems,” they said. With the emergence of LLMs, which can generate fluent text without the need for specialized modules to handle grammar or semantic coherence, the need for linguistic expertise in NLP is being questioned.
