Today, mental disorders, violence and injuries are more prominent in low and middle income
countries (Rebeiro, 2013). Violence stems from all age groups and genders, however, Brazil faces
disproportionately high rates of violence. Violence is a major contributor to morbidity and
individual and collective costs (Reichenheim, 2011). Unfortunately, nearly 90% of people living in
Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro faced at least one lifetime traumatic experience and if only
investigating events constituted as direct exposure to violence (assaultive violence), 59.4% of
residents in Sao Paulo and 63.4% in Rio de Janeiro reported a lifetime exposure (Ribeiro, 2013).
Overall, crime is ignored in Brazil, especially interpersonal violence. The corruption in the
government and police force in conjunction with weapons, drugs, and alcohol create a system
vulnerable to violence (Reicheinheim, 2011). The relationship between population growth, which
more than tripled from 52 million in 1950 to 170 million in 2000, directly relates to increasing
rates of violence. Additionally, there is also a direct relationship with the rapid growth, and
economic burdens associated with mental disorders (Ribeiro 2013, Becker, 2013). Rates of mental
disorders surpass major categories of noncommunicable disease including diabetes, cardiovascular
diseases, chronic respiratory diseases, and cancer (Ribeiro 2013;

The Senior Dance concert, 9 o clock showing consisted of seven dance pieces. The first piece
was called Heavy Dew , this piece was comprised of a six person group dance. The backdrop was
a blue shading. The sounds in this piece were waterfalls, and rainforest sounds. The movements
made me feel as though the dancers were creatures in a wilderness or a rainforest, it was fast
paced. For the first part of the performance the group of girls are dancing in front of the audience
together, then as the musicturns to be more serious and intense, there is just one dancer on the
stage. Then, once all the dancers come back onto the stage, the music starts to soften and slow
down again and the lights begin to dim for the remainder of the performance. The second
performance was a solo act given the title of Love You, Possess Me. The title says it all. This was

These children do not understand that the violence is shown strictly because the public wants to
see it. They cannot grasp the meaning of ratings and entertainment as well as adults can. All they
know is, if the TV portrays violence as cool, then it must be cool! The problem isn t the violence
in the media though; it is the media s failure to show the consequences of violence. This is
especially true of cartoons, toy commercials, and music videos. Children often do not realize that
it hurts to hit someone else because they see it all the time on TV. Everyday a cartoon character is
beat up, injured, or killed, only to return in the very next episode, good as new. As a result, children
learn that there are few, if any repercussions for committing violent acts.
In a recent incident in Norway, two children beat another child by jumping and kicking the child
in the head and other parts of her body numerous times. As a result, the child died from being left
out in the cold because she was not able to move due to her injuries. Later the officials had
discovered that the barbaric incident was due to the fact that the children had watched the violent
cartoon Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. The children thought that the girl would later get up
because in the show the characters never die. Consequently, the show Mighty Morphin Power

In one of ours s trips to Colombia, we were going from Louisville to Bogota with scale in Huston,
TX. In Huston, We took our next plane, and when we were in the middle of the trip a lady who was
