Mobile learning has the potential to disrupt our traditional methods of training delivery. Our smartphones are constantly connected, the interactions we use such as swiping and tapping enable these devices to behave very differently to desktop or laptop computers. Yet our designs for learning remain focused on desktop interactions that just won’t suit mobiles.
We’ve been researching the use of mobile in organisations, including mobile learning, for a number of years now. In 2012 we conducted research into the State of Mobile Learning in Australia (see the results Part 1 and Part 2).
What has changed since that study?
A lot!
We now have newer, faster, more responsive devices - including a range of tablets, from iPads to Galaxy, to Surface. These devices and what we can do with them create enormous opportunities. However, they also can generate a number of complexities!

Overview: With the ever-evolving role of technology in the teaching and learning contexts, changes to the current adopted pedagogical approaches have become inevitable. AI plays an important role in personalizing education to enhance student learning experience for both mainstream student and student who have learning disabilities. Affective computing to understand student emotion and status during various learning activities provides valuable insight on methods that are constructive in the learning process and vise-versa. In addition, the analysis of student emotional and physical status helps reveal overlooked or hidden learning struggles that affect student learning ability. In particular, learning has a social component to it where students have shown the ability to learn effectively from their peers. This is the main basis of collaborative learning. However, a student’s negative attitude towards learning can stem from social anxiety issues and should be detected and addressed to facilitate a healthy relationship in learning. In addition to this, continuous integration of technology and learning has increasingly caused disruption to education, allowing more techniques to be introduced, developed, and tested. From online classes to hybrid settings, the progressive learning framework has been adapting different and new ideas to shape the pedagogies of tomorrow. For example, gamification in learning has shown promising results due to games being a source of motivation and continuity for young players. Coupling AI with gamified learning extends the concept of personalized learning beyond the classroom and supports student engagement. This panel will discuss the importance of personalized education and how AI, affective computing, and gamified learning can be used to support student learning.
Building an Online Learning Community

The State of Mobile Learning - Part 1
Mobile learning is predicted to become a major disruptor to traditional learning environments. However, there is currently a disconnect between how smartphones and tablets are integrated into personal lives versus educational and workplace settings. A survey found that while Australians widely use mobile devices personally, there has only been limited adoption of mobile learning initiatives in educational institutions and workplaces. Common barriers to adoption include a lack of skills and understanding of mobile learning, high development costs, and concerns about supporting multiple devices and ongoing upgrades. For mobile learning to realize its potential, it needs to be better integrated into overall learning strategies rather than viewed as a separate initiative.

Three-dimensional (3D) virtual worlds have been used for more than a decade in higher education for teaching
and learning. Since the 1980s, academics began using virtual worlds as an exciting and innovative new
technology to provide their students with new learning experiences that were difficult to provide any other way.
But since that time, virtual worlds have failed to maintain their popularity as learning spaces; many builds
falling into disuse and many disappearing altogether. The aim of this article is not only to determine why virtual
worlds have not become a mainstream teaching tool, but to ascertain why they have even failed to maintain their
popularity. In order to do this, the research team surveyed over 200 academics about the barriers and enablers to
the use and perceived affordances of virtual worlds in teaching and learning. These responses are examined in
relation to academics’ past, present and future use, experience and knowledge of virtual world environments.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software Fuzzing
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.
