Kwame Nkrumah: Neocolonialism
Kwame Nkrumah: Neocolonialism
● Was born around 1909 in British-controlled Gold Coast
in Africa
● Lived and studied in Pennsylvania, New York, and
London (1935-47)
● Spent time in Harlem, involved in Black community
organizing there
● Returned to the Gold Coast and helped lead its
independence movement
● Ghana became independent nation in 1957
● Nkrumah elected first president
● A 1966 CIA-backed coup overthrew Nkrumah’s
government, and realigned Ghana with the western bloc
