The presentation outlined the successes of a pilot program using climate services to manage risk in the agricultural sector. The second portion explored opportunities for establishing an integrated data management system to support climate and disaster risks planning across key socio-economic sectors. I hope there are lessons for all readers to apply similar thought process in your respective countries and where applicable provide feedback to strengthen this proposal. This presentation discusses the critical importance of the “Communication for Development” (ComDev) approach in ensuring that the voices of all stakeholders are heard in the decision-making process that will be needed in Agricultural Adaptation to Climate Change, but especially illustrates how ComDev can engage those whose livelihoods are most vulnerable and most dependent on natural resource bases. Illustrative examples will be drawn especially from Small Island Developing States (SIDS) in the Caribbean, including the “Voices for CC” initiative in Jamaica as well as best practices in ComDev from RARE Radio in St. Lucia, Toco Radio in Trinidad, among others.

Participatory platforms enable the co-production process of climate services (CS) and provide an
opportunity to strengthen the link between the DoM and technical departments of MAFF through
regular exchange of climate information and understanding of the CS demand from agriculture
sector to develop tailored agro-advisories for planning and decision-making.

Effective dissemination of agro-advisories to last-mile users requires a combination of approach
(LTAC), enhancement of decision-support tool (CDT + SESAME), and utilization of various
communication channels (printed posters, Telegram, face-to-face meetings) compounded with
multi-stakeholder cooperation including government, private sector, NGOs, relevant programs and
farmer organizations, among others.

Collaboration with national hydromet center is critical for timely access to official seasonal climate
and short-term weather forecasts for the translation into agro-advisory. However, this necessitates
improved capacity of hydromet to provide reliable and accurate downscaled climate information
which entails further technical and financial support from government, potential donors, and private
sector cooperation to deliver agro advisory that is most appropriate to farmers’ needs on the ground.

The objective of this work is to contribute to valorization de Nephelium lappaceum by the characterization of kinetics of drying of seeds of Nephelium lappaceum. The seeds were dehydrated until a constant mass respectively in a drying oven and a microwawe oven. The temperatures and the powers of drying are respectively: 50, 60 and 70°C and 140, 280 and 420 W. The results show that the curves of drying of seeds of Nephelium lappaceum do not present a phase of constant kinetics. The coefficients of diffusion vary between 2.09.10-8 to 2.98. 10-8m-2/s in the interval of 50°C at 70°C and between 4.83×10-07 at 9.04×10-07 m-8/s for the powers going of 140 W with 420 W the relation between Arrhenius and a value of energy of activation of 16.49 kJ. mol-1 expressed the effect of the temperature on effective diffusivity.

9. 1. We Built awareness of available weather products which
include:
Farmers bulletin disseminated to extension officers monthly
Web portals that allow persons to get 5-day weather forecast for
specific communities across the island
Text messages indicating severe weather conditions (drought or flash
flood alerts)
Training of extension officers (RADA, Banana Board, Coffee Industry
Board and researchers from Bodles), as well as post training review
Specific successes of the project to
date:
10. 2. Conducted assessment of the usefulness of monthly farmers’
bulletin through:
o Focus group discussions held with farmers and extension staff
o Stakeholder consultation (RADA, JMS, Commodity Boards, FAO,
Bodles Research Unit and CARDI)
o ACDI/VOCA in collaboration with RADA and JMS are conducting a
series of farmers’ forum to prepare them for possible severe
weather systems that could occur in the current and near future.
