I. PURPOSE
To establish a uniform procedure for the issuing, securing and tracking of animal traps by
Field Operations personnel.
II. POLICY
Animal traps are to be used in instances where conventional means of confining animals
are not effective and the capture of an animal is essential (e.g., injured, dangerous, biting,
etc.).

Applicable to all Field Operations personnel.

VII. PROCEDURE
A. Property Receipt
Approval from the Field Sergeant or Watch Commander must be obtained by the
Officer requesting use of a trap. The Property Receipt is to be completed by the
Officer as follows:
1. Date trap is delivered for use.
2. Date trap is to be picked up.
3. First initial, last name and badge number of Officer issuing trap.
4. Engraved number located on the trap(s).

5. Description of the trap(s) (e.g. brown cat trap) and any accompanying
chains, locks, etc.
6. First and last name of person accepting responsibility for the trap.
7. Street address of person accepting responsibility for the trap.
8. City and Zip Code of person accepting responsibility for the trap.
9. Contact phone number for the person accepting responsibility for the trap.
10. Signature of person accepting responsibility for the trap.
11. Date trap is picked up by an Officer.
12. Signature and badge number of Sergeant or Watch Commander designee
checking trap into the storage room.
B. Form Distribution
1. The white copy will be provided to the person accepting responsibility for
the trap.
2. Attach the yellow copy to the document (copy of Activity Card or
Bite/Scratch Report) that resulted in the trap request which will be filed in
the Future Call Box based on the date the trap is to be picked up.
3. For record keeping purposes, place the pink copy on the Field Officer’s
log. It will then be placed in the Trap Records File, which is maintained
by the Operations Desk Sergeant.
4. When the Property Receipt is returned with appropriate staff signature,
return the yellow copy to the Operations Desk Sergeant. The yellow and
pink copies are to be placed together in the “Closed” section of the Trap
Records File.
5. The Trap Records File is to be reviewed weekly. The Closed section of
the file will be maintained for one month then purged.
C. Additional Instructions
1. Each trap is to be individually numbered and identified as property of OC
Animal Care, prior to using.
2. Prior to removing a trap from the storage room, the Sergeant will fill in the
information on the checkout list on the clipboard in the storage room.
3. Citizens who receive traps will be advised that they are accountable for the
traps security. They will also be advised that they are responsible for the
health and welfare of the trapped animal and OC Animal Care is to be
notified as soon as possible when an animal has been confined in the trap.

4. County supplied chains and locks may be used to ensure security at the
placement site (notation of use will be indicated in the description).
5. The Officer returning the trap is responsible for contacting a superior and
ensuring the trap is thoroughly cleaned and disinfected prior to being
secured in the storage room by the Sergeant or Watch Commander. Traps
are not to be left outside of the storage room unattended.
