I. PURPOSE
To establish a uniform guideline for issuance of microchips.
II. POLICY
It is the policy of this Department that all dogs, cats and rabbits adopted from OC Animal
Care shall be microchipped and that the service is also made available to those redeeming
their pets.

Applicable to all personnel involved in the adoption or redemption of a pet.

VII. PROCEDURE
A. Spay/Neuter Animals
1. Animals requiring sterilization shall have the microchip implanted at the
time of surgery by a Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT).
2. The microchip bar code and the animal ID tag will be placed in a 3x4-1/2
manila envelope. The outside of the envelope will be labeled with the
animal ID number and cage number.
3. The surgery staff will deliver to Customer Services staff the surgery log
and attachments no later than 8:00 AM the day following surgery.

4. For those animals already implanted with any brand of microchip,
Customer services staff will create a Tag/Link Window and Store (F9) the
record.
5. Customer services staff will update the Tag/Link Window with the
corresponding microchip number by scanning the barcode into the tag link
window and will attach the remaining bar code labels on top of the
adoption packet.
6. Customer services staff will explain to the customer the importance of
keeping their information with the microchip company current.
7. Customer services staff will contact the veterinary staff via “walkies” to
signal veterinary staff of an animal release.
8. If the animal is in the clinic, an assigned RVT will respond to the call from
kennel customer services staff and take the animal from its cage, verify
animal ID and release the animal to the new owner.
9. At the time of animal pickup, an RVT or Kennel Assistant will scan for
the implanted microchip before releasing to the new pet owner.
10. Customer services staff will attach a bar code on the Avid Certificate and
explain microchip information.
B. Previously Sterilized Animals
1. At the time of the adoption examination, the clinic veterinarian or the
RVT shall implant the microchip.
2. For those animals already implanted with any brand of microchip,
customer services staff will create a Tag/Link Window and store the
record.
3. Upon conclusion of the medical record update, customer services staff
shall complete the Tag/Link Window by deleting the “U” number, replace
it with the microchip number and update the record.
C. AVID Enrollment
Chameleon will automatically transfer all information to Avid electronically.
D. Home Again Microchips

The Customer Service Supervisor will run a Microchip report. The supervisor
will then complete applications for Home Again, mailing them out at least
weekly.
