The document discusses the movie Fight Club and how it relates to the hypodermic needle model theory. It examines how the violence and themes in Fight Club could influence viewers negatively and why the BBFC initially did not rate it as an 18. It also discusses the reception theory approach of Stuart Hall and how individual factors influence how each person interprets a movie. The document then analyzes the movie Juno in terms of the reception theory, discussing the author's negotiated interpretation of it based on humor, music, and plot elements. A survey about viewers' opinions on Juno is also summarized.

1. Fight club was directed by David Fincher in 1999. The movie genre is drama, thriller, crime film tis
was given an 18 certificate. The distributor of fight club was 20th century fox
Hypodermic needle modal are the attitude and feelings that people will take out of movies that they
which they may use in everyday life.
There are some things that was in the movie fight club that can be considered as being hypodermic
modal .For example there are huge amounts of violence in the original copy of the movie that could
encourage people to do the same because of this the movie was not able to even be places as an 18
certificate .The main reason for this was from the encouragement of fighting , suicide and terrorism
.The BBFC(British Board of film classification )it’s their job to choose what films age rating should be
,they would not allow the movie to be classed as even an 18 .Because of this Fight Club needed to
edit parts of the movie out this allowed the movie to be classed as an 18 .I think that they did not
allow it as an 18 at first because the movie can cause disorder in the public which is the BBFC job to
not allow that from happening .
There was a review by a man named Alexander Walker which related to the hypodermic model. ”a
toxic experience and inadmissible assault on personal decency …and on society itself .It resurrects
the Fuhrer principle .It promotes pain and suffering as virtues of the strongest .It tramples every
democratic decency underfoot.”
From this he states that anyone who likes or watches this movie will be influence by the use of
terrorism and be related the Nazis. This shows that he thinks that the use of violence and
destruction that is found within this movie .He believes that people will watch this movie this movie
and then suddenly support Nazism but this obviously is not correct a movie may be able to
influence somebody to do a bad thing but there will also be something psychological that has made
the person do that not just the copying of a movie.
The new laws that were created by the BBFC entitles any adult is to be able to freely choose what
type of entertainment that they which to watch. With this current rule the original version would
not be breaking any of the UK laws that means that it could be classed as an 18 without and edi ting
it to make it cleaner which they did.
Diversion- this is the where the view escapes form their daily life and gets enticed by the movie this
makes them forget about their own life for a short time until the movie ends .For me I found this
when following along with the plot of the movie I seemed to forget about what was happening in my
daily life for the duration of the movie.
Personal relations – this is where people get an emotional attachment to a character or character’s
usually because they are like you or someone you know this is why the use of soap operas can be so
popular .When watching this movie I got a personal attachment to Edwards Norton’s character who
suffers with schizophrenia so it was something that I wanted to find out what his story was
Personal identity – this is where you find some sort of relation between a character in the film and
yourself. When watching the movie I was not really able to find a character that both me and the
characters in the film have in common
2. Surveillance – This is where a person looks at a movie sees something that they like a try’s to follow
it in the real work e.g. clothing .For a media point of view I have I will like the shots and style of
movie that fight club does so if I end up making a movie of my own I may end up using this movie as
inspiration for it .Also the clothing of the movie can be considered as being surveillance ,although it
might be considered out of date now but when the movie came out it may have been considered
quite fashionable since Brad pit was wearing it might entice people to wear the same clothing as
him.
Juno (2008)
Reception theory (Stuart hall)
The reception theory was a theory that was came up with by Stuart hall .The theory was came up
with after the hypodermic model theory in order to show how it was wrong .unlike the hypodermic
model theory Stuarts halls said that a movie will not make a person do something .each person has
his own attitude and personality so each person will get a different feel from watching a movie
.Some of the things that can alter a person’s perception of a movie will be the following .Age
,gender , ethnicity ,social class ,history ,politics plus many more. For example my opinion of a 17 year
old male will differ from the opinion of a 50 year old because we will both see the movie in different
ways .
Preferred in terms of meeting the producers intentions
Negotiated agree with some
Oppositional disagree with most of the film
The movie that I have watched was Juno which is a comedy /drama/coming of age that came out in
2008 .I would say that when I was watching this film my representation of it would be negotiated I
would not say that I hated it but I did not love the movie ether .The reason for me saying this are as
followed .I did agree with the story line of the movie it gives of a good reposition of what teenage
pregnancy is about and how people deal with it .It also gives a good message about adoption and
shows how it can help someone .Some of the things that I disagree with in the movi e are the use of
humour ,one of the things that I thought brought the movie down is the use of humour .I think I did
not like it because the style of humour between Briton and the USA a very different and I personally
don’t like some American humour. I also felt like the song choses felt out of place at the beginning of
the movie they seemed to put the music in at strange times and I think that it did not fit well in it
.Another thing was a small plot point was based on her name being called Juno in the mov ie they
explain that Juno was a Greek god who was Zeus only wife, now that statements was wrong Juno
was a Roman God. When making a plot like based on that but still not having the facts right I think
they should of done there research on it properly. One think that will affect the opinion of the movie
is the time that I was watching it .For example when I was watching this I was forced to watch this
movie for a media assignment because I’m watching it for media I would be a lot more critical then I
would be if I was watching it at the pictures with my friends .Also because I am a male watching a
film that focuses on a girl dealing with underage pregnancy I could not really relate to it but I can see
how girls would be able too especially if they are going through the same thin themselves .
3. This movie was aiming to get a rating of a PG but unfortunate for them the BBFC set the movies
certificate as being a 12.I think that the reasons for this are the fact that there is a part that shows
acts of sex in it although I is covered up and the viewers are unable to see anything it is still not
something that is suitable for a PG .There are also some scenes of gore when the characters in the
movie were watching an old horror movie. There were also some scenes which could be considered
as being unethical for example the part where Juno goes to an abortion clinic.
survey
I have made a survey to find out the people who have watched and what they thought about it . The
first question that I asked was the gender of the people who watched it . Because our class is split in
gender and it was only people out of here that I asked also we was made to watch this movie .The
results were as followed there was 40 % male and 60 % female .But I think that if we had a choice of
watching the film the ratio between female and male would be much higher.
The next question that I asked was what is your age 100% of the people that I asked all said that they
were between the ages of 12-20 again this is because all the people in my class are around the same
age group so there will be no signicant different in the age group . This would change if I was asking
this survey after watching the movie in the cinema but I think the main audience will be teens
anyway.
The next question was how much did you enjoy the movie out of 10 . From this question I found out
that most people liked the movie 10% said 6 ,40% said 7 , 10% said 8 and 10% said 9 . This shows
that most people like the movie and nobody thought it was lower than a 6 .
In question 4 I asked what they liked or disliked about Juno the answers were as followed “I like the
humour.” “I enjoyed the humour and how the film addressed some of the difficulties of teenage
pregnancy, however, I think some of the representations weren't realistic because I don’t think the
parents would be as relaxed in reality as they were in the film when they found out about their
daughter being pregnant”.” thought it was good story line writing”” I thought it was a good, decent
film. It was realistic but slow and a bit boring at times. “The thing that a lot of people are saying as
being a good thing about them is the plot this might be the reason because of the age of the people
that I asked the plot will relate to them more since it is something that might happen to people at
that age.
I then asked what repensation that people had when watching the movie .From this I found out
what people thought about the movie .20%of the people I asked said they were Preferred and 80%
of the people that I asked said that they were Negotiated. This shows that most people think that
the movie is average.
Next I asked what age certificate that Juno should have been given. From this I found out that 100%
of people thought the movie age should be kept the same .This may be because of the age group
younger people may not of noticed the sex and gore scene so they might want it to be a lower
certificate .
The final question that I asked was would you watch this movie again 40% said yes and 60% said no .
Form this I found out that most people did not want to watch this movie again .But the 40% that said
4. yes are all female where as 40% that said no are male .This shows that this movie is more popular to
females
