3D printing, also known as additive manufacturing, is a process for making three-dimensional objects from digital files. It was first developed in 1984 and allows virtual models from CAD files to be printed layer by layer. 3D printing is now used to create objects for industrial design, dental and medical implants, prosthetics, and art. It allows for a clean process with negligible waste and is faster and more affordable than traditional manufacturing methods. The global 3D printing industry is growing rapidly and was valued at over $12 billion in 2018.
