Interview:
I am planning to interview a friend who I am aware is extremely interested in Hama beads. I know that she
will be more than willing to cooperate and complete my interview if I ask her.
I am also considering trying to ask a seller on Etsy, who I can see makes and sells these crafts across the
internet and the planet. This would give me an idea of how they have made a business out of the creations
that I am trying to make a fanzine around.
Interview Questions:
1. Why is it that you like Hama beads?
2. Do you create them or just like the appearance of them?
3. What do you do with the finished products?
4. Do you create your own patterns or find pre-existing ones online & why?
5. How long have you been interested in this activity?
6. Do you sell your creations? If so, where? How did you get into selling them? How do they sell?
7. What would be your favourite topic to create/favourite pattern?
8. Are you active in the online community? Where are you mostly active?
9. Do you participate in any real life communities or is it more of a solitary activity for you?
Interview Evidence:
I asked a friend that I know in real life.
I knew that she would respond relatively fast
to this as she had already assured me that
she would be happy to help me with this.
I have also contacted a creator that I found on Etsy who
may be willing to reply. This will create a new perspective
on the beading as they sell their products as well as
creating.
I have not received a response from him, and that is fine
as I was using him incase I could but I did already have one
response.
Interview:
1) Why is it that you like Hama beads?
Like it there is no limit to what you can do with them, you can make 3d and 2d and keyrings, earrings etc.
2) Do you create them or just like the appearance of them?
Create with them.
3) What do you do with the finished products?
Depends what I had in mind when making them e.g. Keyrings, gifts etc.
4) Do you create your own patterns or find pre-existing ones online & why?
Mixture of both.
5) How long have you been interested in this activity?
As long as I can remember.
6) Do you sell your creations? If so, where? How did you get into selling them? How do they sell?
No, but I might start.
7) What would be your favourite topic to create/favourite pattern?
Don’t really have a favourite pattern or topic, it's just whatever I want to create when the time comes.
8) Are you active in the online community? Where are you mostly active?
Nope.
9) Do you participate in any real life communities or is it more of a solitary activity for you?
Was by myself but now its with friends

Fanzine Title
I am currently unsure with what I would like to be the title of my fanzine so I have got a list of a few possible options, and
sent them out in a survey to a possible audience, to help have more of an accurate view of what they would be more
likely to read or find interesting from the reader point of view. I know that this is a fanzine so it is not essential that I must
appeal to readers instead of myself, but as I have some possible readers for this topic I would like an opinion from them.
After getting back some results,
I have found that most of my
respondents prefer the name
“Hama Time” which will be what
I use.
I did not have any other
suggestions from my audience.

Main- The theme for this edition is… Halloween.
So all you black cats and spoopy plumpkins better stick
around for the fun contained here. We have so many fun
patterns for you. Also an exciting interview from a long-time
fan.
Page 2: Title- Editor’s Choice
Top-Tips:
You can use a hot skewer to make holes in your designs
to add key rings or string or anything you like.
Try using tweezers to pick up some in more delicate
areas.
Pages 3&4: Title- Storage
There are many different ways to store your beads, and it is all down to personal preference. This is just a short
guide of how I have found for a simple way to store them and my opinion on each.
Packaging it comes in. You could decide to store your beads in the tubs that they were in when you bought
them. I dislike this method as it means they are very mixed up still and I find it harder to get the colours you
want if you are getting a mixed tub, which I often do. Or if you get a single colour bag, its not resealable.
Pros- A pro of this one is that you do not have to buy more storage methods.
Another pro is that you do not have to spend time organizing them.
Cons- A con of this is that it would be a lot harder to find the colour that you want. Especially if you are wanting
to fill a big area.
You also can’t tell how many of each colour you have left to know if you have enough for a design or need more.
Divided boxes. You can find boxes with dividers in almost every good craft shop, and I find them quite effective
ways to store a good amount of beads in a range of colours.
Pros- They are kept together so you only need to grab a small amount of tubs to start your beading session, this
makes it convenient and easy.
You can colour coordinate your tubs – You can make them into a rainbow, Keep all of one colour together, or all
of one pack – e.g. all pastel or all neon.
Cons- They can only fit a very limited amount of each colour so you can end up filling a section very fast and
needing more storage.
If you’re low on a colour next to a colour that is pretty full, it can look very uneven.
Individual tubs. You could buy a lot of small tubs to sort your beads into so you can fit a lot in.
Pros- You can fit a lot of each colour in a tub.
You can buy the tubs at many different sizes for how many beads you own.
You can get shelving units to store them in or stack them easily.
You only need to pick out the colours that you need for the particular project.
Cons- If you are stacking these then it can be a little harder to get one of them out from under others.
This method does use a lot more space than the others as it is a lot of individual things.
This can also cost a lot more seems it is is buying as many as 52 just for the regular colours, never mind the striped,
pastel, neon, translucent, or any other they decide to release.
Resealable bags. You could store all the beads in separate resealable bags that can be put in a box or wherever you
choose to store these.
Pros- This would let you choose the size of the bags and is very universal.
You could pick up bags like this in so many places for a relatively small cost, so that makes this one the cheapest
option for having them separated.
These can be stored in almost any container white taking up a small amount of space.
This is a good back up for the divided tubs as if they do not all fit in, could store extras in this method.
Cons- These can be harder to fill than tubs as the opening often closes or they fall and tilt.
These can split and you would have to clean up a bead-splosion.
If you’re using smaller bags, you may need to use quite a few.

Pages 7 & 8: Title- Now What?
Now that you’ve laid out your beads and ironed them, what now? What do you do with this sheet of plastic?
Well lucky for you, I’ve got a couple ideas that you can use.
Wall décor- You could just stand it up against a wall, stick it with sticky tape or any other way you can think to
simply attach it. All depends on if you want to risk your walls.
Keyring- Simply attach some jump rings, and a keyring. Simple yet effective. Best to use pliers and to not pull the
jump rings apart.
Badge- Glue a badge back to it and you can attach it to your clothes, bags, or whatever else. This also works with
pin badges.
Necklace- You can find an old necklace chain or buy new, and sting it on, or any other way you prefer.
Earrings- Buy some earring findings- stud backs, or hooks for a more dangled design. Easy to string on with jump
rings or glue them on.
Magnets- Glue a magnet to the back and use it to keep hold of important notes or just for some decoration.

I have also contacted a creator that I found on Etsy who may be willing to reply. This will create a new perspective on the beading as they sell their products as well as creating. I have not received a response from him, and that is fine as I was using him incase I could but I did already have one response.
  • 5. Interview: 1) Why is it that you like Hama beads? Was by myself but now its with friends Replies from Steph, aged 22
  • 6. Fanzine Title I am currently unsure with what I would like to be the title of my fanzine so I have got a list of a few possible options, and sent them out in a survey to a possible audience, to help have more of an accurate view of what they would be more likely to read or find interesting from the reader point of view. I know that this is a fanzine so it is not essential that I must appeal to readers instead of myself, but as I have some possible readers for this topic I would like an opinion from them. After getting back some results, I have found that most of my respondents prefer the name “Hama Time” which will be what I use. I did not have any other suggestions from my audience.
  • 7. Copy: Page 1: Title- THEME Main- The theme for this edition is… Halloween. So all you black cats and spoopy plumpkins better stick around for the fun contained here. We have so many fun patterns for you. Also an exciting interview from a long-time fan. Page 2: Title- Editor’s Choice Top-Tips: You can use a hot skewer to make holes in your designs to add key rings or string or anything you like. Try using tweezers to pick up some in more delicate areas.
  • 8. Pages 3&4: Title- Storage There are many different ways to store your beads, and it is all down to personal preference. This is just a short guide of how I have found for a simple way to store them and my opinion on each. Packaging it comes in. You could decide to store your beads in the tubs that they were in when you bought them. I dislike this method as it means they are very mixed up still and I find it harder to get the colours you want if you are getting a mixed tub, which I often do. Or if you get a single colour bag, its not resealable. Pros- A pro of this one is that you do not have to buy more storage methods. Another pro is that you do not have to spend time organizing them. Cons- A con of this is that it would be a lot harder to find the colour that you want. Especially if you are wanting to fill a big area. You also can’t tell how many of each colour you have left to know if you have enough for a design or need more. Divided boxes. You can find boxes with dividers in almost every good craft shop, and I find them quite effective ways to store a good amount of beads in a range of colours. Pros- They are kept together so you only need to grab a small amount of tubs to start your beading session, this makes it convenient and easy. You can colour coordinate your tubs – You can make them into a rainbow, Keep all of one colour together, or all of one pack – e.g. all pastel or all neon. Cons- They can only fit a very limited amount of each colour so you can end up filling a section very fast and needing more storage. If you’re low on a colour next to a colour that is pretty full, it can look very uneven.
  • 9. This can also cost a lot more seems it is is buying as many as 52 just for the regular colours, never mind the striped, pastel, neon, translucent, or any other they decide to release. Resealable bags. You could store all the beads in separate resealable bags that can be put in a box or wherever you choose to store these. Pros- This would let you choose the size of the bags and is very universal. You could pick up bags like this in so many places for a relatively small cost, so that makes this one the cheapest option for having them separated.

  • 11. Pages 7 & 8: Title- Now What? Now that you’ve laid out your beads and ironed them, what now? What do you do with this sheet of plastic? Well lucky for you, I’ve got a couple ideas that you can use. Wall décor- You could just stand it up against a wall, stick it with sticky tape or any other way you can think to simply attach it. All depends on if you want to risk your walls. Keyring- Simply attach some jump rings, and a keyring. Simple yet effective. Best to use pliers and to not pull the jump rings apart. Badge- Glue a badge back to it and you can attach it to your clothes, bags, or whatever else. This also works with pin badges. Necklace- You can find an old necklace chain or buy new, and sting it on, or any other way you prefer. Earrings- Buy some earring findings- stud backs, or hooks for a more dangled design. Easy to string on with jump rings or glue them on. Magnets- Glue a magnet to the back and use it to keep hold of important notes or just for some decoration.

Editor's Notes

  1. You should document the process of getting your interview. You should produce a range of questions and also a list of interviewees. You should provide an unedited transcript of the interview as well as at least one draft of it. Interviews can be written in whatever style you prefer.
  2. All the other written elements of your fanzine are up to you but should be documented here. If you decide to write a review, a polemic, an article or anything else, it needs to be documented here. Drafts are good so it is worth writing a first draft then producing a second which not only checks for spelling and grammar errors but also ensures that your work has a consistent style, quality and structure. Recording your research, as and when it happens, is also a very strong idea. If you need to look up a fact or read an article, record that.
