1. Brief overview of research project and major accomplishments expected.
The present research project aims at investigating Italian cinema from the mid-1940s to
the early 1960s – particularly during the twenty-year period from 1943 to 1963 – in rela-
tion to the construction of the image of the young Italian man. The main objective is to
understand how the cinematic apparatus throughout these two decades gave shape to
male national identities that emerged at the same time as the burgeoning youth culture
produced by the new Italian consumer society.
The project’s rationale is based on two general assumptions. Firstly, the conviction
that the cinematic institution at the time and its representations reveal the crisis of con-
ventional male authority and control at a moment of great historical, social and cultural
change. From this perspective, the young Italian man functions as a multi-faceted trope
that challenges the patriarchal conventions and values embodied by older men. Se-
condly, there is an urgent need for greater attention to Italian cinematic masculinity; in
this respect, this project will ascertain the vital but neglected role played by cinema du-
ring these twenty years in constructing youth culture, so carefully defined and investiga-
ted in its constitutive peculiarities by history and sociology.
The overall accomplishment expected in conducting this research project is to re-
consider Italian cinema of the mid-1940s to early 1960s and its spectatorial receptions
in the light of the more accurate and informed methodologies – namely those from the
field of Anglophone Italian cultural studies – able to treat film forms as more than ae-
sthetic works and thus expand their meanings in terms of social and cultural practices
related to a specific historical era. The monograph that will be the major output of the
project will present this reconceptualisation of Italian cinema and masculinity.
2. Long-term career objectives.
This project will allow me to complement and complete my postdoctoral career within
the specific fields of film analysis, cultural production and gender studies. Given my ex-
tensive academic background in Italian studies and gender/sexual representations, the
Marie Curie fellowship will propel my research skills and capabilities to the desired level
of professional maturity and allow me to be recognised at an international level.
The acquisition of new and powerful methodological approaches will allow me to de-
velop my competence in two distinct but complementary ways. Firstly, in terms of aca-
demic production, the fellowship will give me the opportunity to disseminate my re-
search through the publication of a monograph on the figure of the young Italian man in
the cinema of the long post-war period; this output will enable me to enrich my track re-
cord and thus acquire more credibility and opportunities in my academic field. Se-
condly, in terms of educational engagement, through this project, I will develop my
skills in applying new hypotheses and methodologies to elaborate a media literacy mo-
del capable of integrating the imperatives of my approach with the need for forms of
public training about gender issues; in this case, my professional trajectory will be ap-
propriate within the framework of the educational institutions devoted to ‘formal’ and
‘non-formal’ education.
According to the lines of reference just described, the fellowship will focus on two
specific kinds of training actions. The first one relates to my professional development
as a media educator. At least two workshops and two seminars will be planned in
which the research outputs will be reformulated so as to integrate the academic profile
and agenda of the project and the demands of media education curricula about gender
and media representations and reception. These events, and the work in collaboration
with the Department of Italian, the Department of Film and Television and the Screen
Research Cluster at Bristol, have a double function. The first one deals with their capa-
city to enrich the theoretical organisation and development of the project with knowled-
ge, skills and competences about the cultural and social meanings of gender forma-
tions and their reception; this will be the occasion in which I will transfer my ideas and
notions about Italian masculinity and its historical transformations via cinematic appara-
tus to scholars of the field from different academic traditions. The second one concerns
the didactic potential of the workshops and seminars scheduled in collaboration with
the host insofar as they constitute frames of reference to implement strategies of ‘popu-
lar’ dissemination and critical pedagogy in relation to issues about the history of mascu-
linity in Europe, ‘technologies’ of gender proliferation like cinema, and the related prac-
tices of consumption and modelling.
The second training activity of the fellowship aims to maximise my chances of step-
ping rapidly into a major research role in the European academic community. In the
process of attaining this overall objective, I will also aim to broaden my disciplinary ran-
ge, increasing my expertise especially in literary and cultural theory; to improve my ex-
perience of archival work and of the analysis of materials thus collected; to develop
new contacts in local, national and international networks. The University of Bristol of-
fers various workshops on complementary skills, and I will attend several training cour-
ses. A small selection of these are as follows: Papers: rapid, focused first draft; Presen-
ting with confidence and flair; Effective networking for research; Managing your re-
search projects successfully; Strong roots: Managing the early stages of your research
career; People management skills for researchers; Preparing to manage research
groups.
3. Short-term objectives.
3.1 Research results.
Publications in major peer-review journals, chapters of edited books, and conferences
presentations and/or proceedings are expected on the basis of the progress of my re-
search and the specific results obtained. The main topics covered within such pubblica-
tions deal with the cultural notion of masculinity, its performances within film and audio-
visual texts, and its historical configurations as gender identity.

3.2 Research skills and techniques.
The present project will be modulated on and in synergy with three fields of study which
are part of a core group of research themes that cut across the Bristol departmental
and faculty boundaries: the gender research theme focuses on questions of gender
and contemporary social change, building on a long-standing tradition at Bristol of re-
search and teaching on gender and feminist theory; the area of reception explores the
relationship between past and present and the role of the receiver (the reader, viewer
or listener) in the transmission of culture; and, finally, Screen Research@Bristol is an
interdisciplinary group working in screen studies, a broad field that incorporates film,
television and digital media technologies.
Extensive training in each of them will provide me with a productive platform in order
to accomplish the project objectives outlined above. Under the direct guidance of the
supervisor and other members of the Department of Italian, the Department of Film and
Television, and the Multimedia Centre, I will actively contribute to the development of
these research areas through the organisation of seminars, discussions and other oc-
casions in which knowledge exhange will be possible.
3.3 Research management.
This section is not relevant to me, as I am already on a major grant.
3.4 Communication skills.
The Marie Curie Individual Fellowship constitutes an invaluable opportunity to work on
my personal presentation, research, and communication skills. Indeed, the international
conferences, workshops and seminars that I will plan to attend, according to my career
development plan, will be crucial in further developing my research activities and com-
munication skills.
The outcomes of the research project will be communicated by means of a number
of dissemination initiatives directed both at academic communities and general audien-
ces. Public engagement activities will be conducted in accordance with the University
of Bristol. The strategy proposed here includes several ways to create ‘popular’ aware-
ness principally about one of the main topics of the project – the fact that masculinity is
not a natural entity but a product of several converging forces and factors, and that ci-
nematic technology is a powerful force in the creation of forms of gender identification.
On the other hand, as a visiting scholar, I will be expected to contribute to the extant
research culture in the Department of Italian. The Department aims to ensure that all
academic visitors are fully integrated into it. This would normally include the following
activities: delivery of a research seminar paper on the proposed research; attendance
at regular research seminars and workshops within the School of Modern Languages
and other research centres within the University; publish research papers in refereed
journals; and attendance at international conferences as speaker. All these activities
just listed will help me to improve my oral and written scientific communication skills.
3.5 Other professional training (course work, teaching activity).
At the moment, no other professional training activities or practices are defined. Teach-
ing assistantships of undergraduate students, mentoring of younger researchers, and
other activities of this kind will be considered in due time, when the opportunity arises.
3.6 Anticipated networking opportunities.
During my stay at the University of Bristol as a Marie Curie Research Fellow, I will plan
to work in close collaboration with my academic advisor, Dr. Catherine O’Rawe, and
the other colleagues of the Department of Italian. Additionally, I will be in contact with
the Screen Research@Bristol research group, an interdisciplinary and interdepartmen-
tal group working in screen studies.
The fellow will be in direct contact with other network partners, like the Transnational
Masculinities project, an interdisciplinary workshop series funded by Bristol’s Institute of
Advanced Studies and coordinated by Dr. Connor Doak (Department of Russian, Uni-
versity of Bristol) and Dr. Bradley Stephens (Department of French, University of Bri-
stol). Additionally, I will be in contact with the Italian Research Network in Celebrity Cul-
ture (Dipartimento delle Arti, University of Bologna) and the Group of Research on
Masculinity in Media and Performing Arts (University of Turin).
Finally, international conferences and other mobility possibilities allowed by the fel-
lowship (i.e. the anticipated conferences presentations, and seminars and workshop
attendances listed above) will constitute a great opportunity to meet well-known re-
searchers form around the world.
3.7 Other activities with professional relevance.
At the moment, no other professional activities or practices are defined.

2.-MARIE-CURIE-1St-Year-Career Development Plan-Bristol

  • 1. Career Development Plan-year 1. Name of fellow: Enrico Biasin Department: Department of Italian Name of Supervisor: Catherine O’Rawe Date: 15th November 2016 1. Brief overview of research project and major accomplishments expected. The present research project aims at investigating Italian cinema from the mid-1940s to the early 1960s – particularly during the twenty-year period from 1943 to 1963 – in rela- tion to the construction of the image of the young Italian man. The main objective is to understand how the cinematic apparatus throughout these two decades gave shape to male national identities that emerged at the same time as the burgeoning youth culture produced by the new Italian consumer society. The project’s rationale is based on two general assumptions. Firstly, the conviction that the cinematic institution at the time and its representations reveal the crisis of con- ventional male authority and control at a moment of great historical, social and cultural change. From this perspective, the young Italian man functions as a multi-faceted trope that challenges the patriarchal conventions and values embodied by older men. Se- condly, there is an urgent need for greater attention to Italian cinematic masculinity; in this respect, this project will ascertain the vital but neglected role played by cinema du- ring these twenty years in constructing youth culture, so carefully defined and investiga- ted in its constitutive peculiarities by history and sociology. The overall accomplishment expected in conducting this research project is to re- consider Italian cinema of the mid-1940s to early 1960s and its spectatorial receptions in the light of the more accurate and informed methodologies – namely those from the field of Anglophone Italian cultural studies – able to treat film forms as more than ae- sthetic works and thus expand their meanings in terms of social and cultural practices related to a specific historical era. The monograph that will be the major output of the project will present this reconceptualisation of Italian cinema and masculinity. 2. Long-term career objectives. This project will allow me to complement and complete my postdoctoral career within the specific fields of film analysis, cultural production and gender studies. Given my ex- tensive academic background in Italian studies and gender/sexual representations, the Marie Curie fellowship will propel my research skills and capabilities to the desired level of professional maturity and allow me to be recognised at an international level. The acquisition of new and powerful methodological approaches will allow me to de- velop my competence in two distinct but complementary ways. Firstly, in terms of aca- demic production, the fellowship will give me the opportunity to disseminate my re- search through the publication of a monograph on the figure of the young Italian man in the cinema of the long post-war period; this output will enable me to enrich my track re- cord and thus acquire more credibility and opportunities in my academic field. Se-
  • 2. condly, in terms of educational engagement, through this project, I will develop my skills in applying new hypotheses and methodologies to elaborate a media literacy mo- del capable of integrating the imperatives of my approach with the need for forms of public training about gender issues; in this case, my professional trajectory will be ap- propriate within the framework of the educational institutions devoted to ‘formal’ and ‘non-formal’ education. According to the lines of reference just described, the fellowship will focus on two specific kinds of training actions. The first one relates to my professional development as a media educator. At least two workshops and two seminars will be planned in which the research outputs will be reformulated so as to integrate the academic profile and agenda of the project and the demands of media education curricula about gender and media representations and reception. These events, and the work in collaboration with the Department of Italian, the Department of Film and Television and the Screen Research Cluster at Bristol, have a double function. The first one deals with their capa- city to enrich the theoretical organisation and development of the project with knowled- ge, skills and competences about the cultural and social meanings of gender forma- tions and their reception; this will be the occasion in which I will transfer my ideas and notions about Italian masculinity and its historical transformations via cinematic appara- tus to scholars of the field from different academic traditions. The second one concerns the didactic potential of the workshops and seminars scheduled in collaboration with the host insofar as they constitute frames of reference to implement strategies of ‘popu- lar’ dissemination and critical pedagogy in relation to issues about the history of mascu- linity in Europe, ‘technologies’ of gender proliferation like cinema, and the related prac- tices of consumption and modelling. The second training activity of the fellowship aims to maximise my chances of step- ping rapidly into a major research role in the European academic community. In the process of attaining this overall objective, I will also aim to broaden my disciplinary ran- ge, increasing my expertise especially in literary and cultural theory; to improve my ex- perience of archival work and of the analysis of materials thus collected; to develop new contacts in local, national and international networks. The University of Bristol of- fers various workshops on complementary skills, and I will attend several training cour- ses. A small selection of these are as follows: Papers: rapid, focused first draft; Presen- ting with confidence and flair; Effective networking for research; Managing your re- search projects successfully; Strong roots: Managing the early stages of your research career; People management skills for researchers; Preparing to manage research groups. 3. Short-term objectives. 3.1 Research results. Publications in major peer-review journals, chapters of edited books, and conferences presentations and/or proceedings are expected on the basis of the progress of my re- search and the specific results obtained. The main topics covered within such pubblica- tions deal with the cultural notion of masculinity, its performances within film and audio- visual texts, and its historical configurations as gender identity. Anticipated publications: 1. Enrico Biasin, Federico Zecca (eds), ‘Inside Gonzo Porn’, special issue, Porn Stud- ies, vol. 3, n. 4, 2016, pp. 332-410.

Enrico Biasin, The Online Star Text Connection in Contemporary Italian Male Film Celebrities, paper to be given at the International Conference of the Journal of Ital- ian Cinema and Media Studies - Innovations and Tensions: Italian Cinema and Me- dia in a Global World, The American University of Rome, Rome, 9-10 June 2017. 7. Enrico Biasin, paper to be given at the 9th International Conference on Textual Analysis What Is Cinema?, University of Valladolid, Valladolid, 18-21 October 2017. 3.2 Research skills and techniques. The present project will be modulated on and in synergy with three fields of study which are part of a core group of research themes that cut across the Bristol departmental and faculty boundaries: the gender research theme focuses on questions of gender and contemporary social change, building on a long-standing tradition at Bristol of re- search and teaching on gender and feminist theory; the area of reception explores the relationship between past and present and the role of the receiver (the reader, viewer or listener) in the transmission of culture; and, finally, Screen Research@Bristol is an
  • 4. interdisciplinary group working in screen studies, a broad field that incorporates film, television and digital media technologies. Extensive training in each of them will provide me with a productive platform in order to accomplish the project objectives outlined above. Under the direct guidance of the supervisor and other members of the Department of Italian, the Department of Film and Television, and the Multimedia Centre, I will actively contribute to the development of these research areas through the organisation of seminars, discussions and other oc- casions in which knowledge exhange will be possible. 3.3 Research management. This section is not relevant to me, as I am already on a major grant. 3.4 Communication skills. The Marie Curie Individual Fellowship constitutes an invaluable opportunity to work on my personal presentation, research, and communication skills. Indeed, the international conferences, workshops and seminars that I will plan to attend, according to my career development plan, will be crucial in further developing my research activities and com- munication skills. The outcomes of the research project will be communicated by means of a number of dissemination initiatives directed both at academic communities and general audien- ces. Public engagement activities will be conducted in accordance with the University of Bristol. The strategy proposed here includes several ways to create ‘popular’ aware- ness principally about one of the main topics of the project – the fact that masculinity is not a natural entity but a product of several converging forces and factors, and that ci- nematic technology is a powerful force in the creation of forms of gender identification. On the other hand, as a visiting scholar, I will be expected to contribute to the extant research culture in the Department of Italian. The Department aims to ensure that all academic visitors are fully integrated into it. This would normally include the following activities: delivery of a research seminar paper on the proposed research; attendance at regular research seminars and workshops within the School of Modern Languages and other research centres within the University; publish research papers in refereed journals; and attendance at international conferences as speaker. All these activities just listed will help me to improve my oral and written scientific communication skills. 3.5 Other professional training (course work, teaching activity). At the moment, no other professional training activities or practices are defined. Teach- ing assistantships of undergraduate students, mentoring of younger researchers, and other activities of this kind will be considered in due time, when the opportunity arises. 3.6 Anticipated networking opportunities. During my stay at the University of Bristol as a Marie Curie Research Fellow, I will plan to work in close collaboration with my academic advisor, Dr. Catherine O’Rawe, and the other colleagues of the Department of Italian. Additionally, I will be in contact with the Screen Research@Bristol research group, an interdisciplinary and interdepartmen- tal group working in screen studies. The fellow will be in direct contact with other network partners, like the Transnational Masculinities project, an interdisciplinary workshop series funded by Bristol’s Institute of Advanced Studies and coordinated by Dr. Connor Doak (Department of Russian, Uni-
  • 5. versity of Bristol) and Dr. Bradley Stephens (Department of French, University of Bri- stol). Additionally, I will be in contact with the Italian Research Network in Celebrity Cul- ture (Dipartimento delle Arti, University of Bologna) and the Group of Research on Masculinity in Media and Performing Arts (University of Turin). Finally, international conferences and other mobility possibilities allowed by the fel- lowship (i.e. the anticipated conferences presentations, and seminars and workshop attendances listed above) will constitute a great opportunity to meet well-known re- searchers form around the world. 3.7 Other activities with professional relevance. At the moment, no other professional activities or practices are defined. Enrico Biasin Catherine O’Rawe 15th November 2016 15th November 2016
