From 2012 to now…
GivingTuesday is a vital part of the end-of-year fundraising
cycle now, but it is still a fairly new idea.
- GivingTuesday started as a movement to raise
awareness of generosity in 2012.
- In 2021, over 2.7 billion dollars was raised (on and
offline) for non-profit organizations all over the world
- Over 35 million people participated in GivingTuesday in
the United States un 2021.
- In 2021, Facebook matched $8 million dollars of Giving
Tuesday giving.
- GivingTuesdaySPARK is a new movement for youth to
encourage volunteerism, kindness, and giving back.
- GivingTuesday will celebrate 10 years in 2022.

Best Practices for
Thanking Donors
1. Be prompt, sincere, and accurate.
2. Personalize.
3. Be warm, personable, and conversational.
4. Give the donor the credit and remove yourself
as the middleman.
5. Reflect on what a kind, compassionate and
generous person they are.
6. Write at a 6th-grade reading level and use twice
as many “you’s” as organizational-centric
language.
7. Make it engaging by starting the middle of the
action, using photos, unexpected narrators, or
sharing a quick story from one person you’ve
helped.
8. Don’t use the same exact copy month after
month.
9. Include your tax id #, gift amount, and date of
the gift so it can serve as their tax receipt.
10. Leverage the P.S.

While GivingTuesday has caused a peak in
giving, it is also important to remember:
- Facebook’s 8 million dollar match in 2021
was gone in seconds!
- If GivingTuesday is not your biggest
giving day, you are not alone.
- December will likely be a greater
opportunity of giving than
GivingTuesday.
- GivingTuesday needs to be part of a
comprehensive fundraising strategy.
