88. 5S Implementation Guidelines
Sorting involves going through all the tools, furniture,
materials, equipment, etc. in a workplace to determine
what needs to be present and what can be removed. A
workspace will be better off without unnecessary items
or items used infrequently. Consider the following
options when you determine that some of the items
found in your area are unnecessary:
DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION
DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION –SCHOOLS DIVISION OF SOUTH COTABATO
89. 5S Implementation Guidelines
Give the items to the different sections/departments;
Turnover documents to the Records In-Charge for
proper disposal as per NAP guidelines;
Turnover equipment to the Property Custodian for
proper inventory of items and disposal, and/or
Put items in the storage area/red tag area.
DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION

90. 5S Implementation Guidelines
Set in Order is to create good visual management. During
this phase, every personnel should determine what
arrangements are most logical. School personnel should
always allocate and store items in accessible and
navigable spots. Labelling or color coding of
items/documents so that they are easier to find and
identify is one of the important points in this phase.

91. 5S Implementation Guidelines
Shine focuses on cleaning up the work area,
which means sweeping, mopping, dusting,
wiping down surfaces, putting unnecessary tools
and materials, etc. Everybody is responsible in
cleaning his/her office/classroom.

92. 5S Implementation Guidelines
Standardize is to systematize everything that
just happened and turn one-time efforts into
habits. To standardize is to assign regular tasks,
create schedules, and post instructions so these
activities become routines.
DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION

93. 5S Implementation Guidelines
Sustain refers to the process of keeping 5S running
smoothly, but also of keeping everyone in the
organization involved. Sustain is about making 5S
a long-term program, not just an event or short-term
project. And when 5S is sustained over time, that's
when businesses will start to notice continuous
positive results.
