Directly addressing malnutrition with Moringa(1 of 2) Numerous options exist for humans to access this fast-growing miracle plant's bio-availability: • Leaf - as Saag, Salad and Teas, or added to Roti or Chawal; • Green vegetable pods - as Subzi, Salon or Daal; • Dried seeds - crushed for Oil; • Roots - as a fresh vegetable, or as a base for Achar and Pickles.

- Welcome to this concise presentation and I trust that you will enjoy this opportunity to learn a little about Moringa Olifera (Sohanjana) and its scope in development programmes. Questions are most welcome, but please hold them until this brief slideshow has completed.
- With such a broad range of benefits, I feel strongly that Moringa has enormous capacity to improve human health and well-being - and really, isn't that what development programmes should be all about? So let's lift the veil and look at each in turn ...
- This is not something new - Ayurveda has made use of Moringa for millenia. And it only takes a little of this miracle plant to act as an effective nutritional supplement.
- So what does Moringa offer? As you can see from this slide, it packs a World Heavyweight nutritional punch.
- Apart from use as a general nutritional supplement, Moringa has proven effective in the treatment of a range of specific illnesses.
- Apart from being an alternative to expensive worm medication and harmful hormonal stimulants for Milk production, Moringa offers other gains for our four-legged friends - and healthier animals mean that their offspring and the humans with whom their products are shared, become healthier too.
- It follows that a healthier household will require less expenditure.
- A wholistic approach to development should not overlook the need to improve household income. However, I believe that while the export market is very attractive, we should always start at the farm gate.
- While I am not yet familiar with prices in Pakistan, these are up to date figures from Nepal.
- Value-adding in the production of tea-bags significantly offers an increase in the value of dried Moringa powder - from NPR 700 to NPR 3,500/kg.
- So how do we as civil society members bridge that gap between malnutrition and development? I think we have to be creative in exploring options that integrate well with community needs and donor priorities.
- My experience of development tells me that such a vision is likely to resonate well with the type of audience gathered here today.
- New models of cooperation need to be developed to ensure that primary producer's are not poorly paid slaves to brokers.
- Questions remain about production techniques which reflect sustainable development and making the world a better place for our children.
- Focus on health gains - don't start by trying to dazzle people with economic benefits.
- Remind people that even at large scale cultivation Moringa will grow well on marginal land.
- Beware of snake oil salesmen and top-down models.
- Pakistan's recent election offers an interesting and reassuring opportunity for these children and their families.
- Let me leave you with this quote from Gandhi-ji. "Recall the face of the poorest and the weakest man who you may have seen, and ask yourself if the step you contemplate is going to be of any use to him."
