Faith Photo: Linda Ogwell/Oxfam “ The plastics recycling plant will greatly boost our income and create employment for young people in our slum thereby reducing the number of unemployed youth who idle around and can be easily lured into crime.”
Hope Photo: Linda Ogwell/Oxfam “ After sorting the garbage, we sell the plastics to middlemen who in turn take them to the manufacturers; however they exploit us because they know that we are desperate. This project will eliminate them from the equation and we will get our goods worth”
Dignity Photo: Linda Ogwell/Oxfam “ Choosing Mukuru as the site for the plant has restored our confidence and hope that the youth in Mukuru have not been forgotten. We have been given a chance to prove that we are not just about idling, receiving handouts or being involved in crime.”
Empowerment Photo: Linda Ogwell/Oxfam “ Once we set up the plant, we will buy plastics at a good price, then wash, pallet and mould for sale to manufactures. The profits from this will be shared out equally by the groups. Later on, we hope to have the youth directly operating the machines . ”

Accessable, multi-use facility Photo: Paul Muchire “ Our path ways will no longer be littered with human waste, we will now have a nearby toilet for everyone including the children and women who experience problems especially at night when they can't walk to the toilets that are far away. In addition, we can have our community meetings in the meeting room”
Pride of work Photo: Paul Muchire “ This is an innovative and practical initiative geared towards improving water and sanitation conditions within the informal settlements, giving alternative green and clean energy sources, as well as addressing social-economic needs of the people, an example of a best practice . ”
Health and safety Photo: Paul Muchire “ I am always afraid to walk a long distance to the toilet, but now we will have one nearby and am happy with that. We will also have water so I don’t have to walk far away when my mum sends me.”

Editor's Notes

1. We're going to look at some ways in which people in Nairobi's slums - supported by Oxfam and its local implementing NGO partners - are making a better life, through two different types of recycling. To do this, I’ll be sharing with you a brief glimpse at both an emerging and an established project in Nairobi.
2. There are more than 66 slums in Nairobi, which are home to 60% of the city’s 3.2 million inhabitants - and the people who make up that 60% (1.92 million) are crowded onto only 5 per cent of the land - without adequate shelter, clean water or decent sanitation. 90% have no access to piped, clean water. Disease is rampant. Employment prospects are minimal and/or exploitative.
3. Does your office look like this? Recycling of waste is the one of the ways Oxfam is supporting people to move out of poverty. Evans Song (in the yellow coat) and other members of Oasis Youth Group are working at a dumpsite in Mukuru slum. The group will benefit from a recycling plant to be established by MSDP, with support from Oxfam.
4. The second project is recycling something we’re a bit hesitant to talk about - but it happens in the round building at the rear of this photo - a bio-centre to deal with the waste you and I produce every single day.
5. Back to recycling number one. Young people are already active in this field, but are at the bottom end of the business value chain - and we’ll see how they feel about that shortly. John Odong is a member of Lunga Lunga Youth Group working here at the group’s plastics sorting site in Mukuru. Lunga Lunga is another beneficiary of the proposed recycling plant.
6. Would you and I turn our noses up at this job? Khalil Gibran wrote: "Work is love made visible. And if you cannot work with love but only with distaste, it is better that you should leave your work and sit at the gate of the temple and take alms of those who work with joy. For if you bake bread with indifference, you bake a bitter bread that feeds but half man's hunger." These guys - members of the Kingstone Youth Group - certainly seem to be enjoying their work of collecting garbage.
7. It’s early days for this project, but this is the proposed site for the Mukuru Plastics Recycling Plant that will benefit several youth groups working in waste management from the slum. By working with Mukuru Slum Development Programme (MSDP) Oxfam is helping people to improve their environment and make a living that can lift them out of poverty.
8. Let’s see what young people themselves think of this programme. “ The plastics recycling plant will greatly boost our income and create employment for young people in our slum thereby reducing the number of unemployed youth who idle around and can be easily lured into crime” Faith Nzisa, 20 year old member of Bedjos Garbage Collection Group in Mukuru, Nairobi.
9. Here’s Evans – the guy in the yellow coat in our earlier photo – looking forward to securing a better deal. “ After sorting the garbage, we sell the plastics to middlemen who in turn take them to the manufacturers; however they exploit us because they know that we are desperate. This project will eliminate them from the equation and we will get our goods worth” Evans Song, 24 year old member of Oasis Youth Group, Mukuru, Nairobi.
10. And Musa – he’s looking for a chance to escape stereotyping and build self-esteem. “ Choosing Mukuru as the site for the plant has restored our confidence and hope that the youth in Mukuru have not been forgotten. We have been given a chance to prove that we are not just about idling, receiving handouts or being involved in crime” Musa Gitau, 29 years old, Vijana Tufanye Kazi Youth Group.
11. Nahashon, one of our partner NGO’s Project Officers, is excited about local ownership and the prospects of empowering through development. “ Once we set up the plant, we will buy plastics at a good price, then wash, pallet and mould for sale to manufactures. The profits from this will be shared out equally by the groups. Later on, we hope to have the youth directly operating the machines” Nahashon Murimi, Youth Officer, Mukuru Slum Development Project (MSDP).
12. At this stage (April 2011) we are busy with building community support and youth group capacity as the plant and equipment is being installed. Here we see youth group members listening keenly during a sensitization and mentoring meeting.
13. And so, on to the ‘other’ recycling, where community ownership is a key focus. The Mukuru Environmental Project committee - who are overseeing the bio-centre construction - meeting near the site.
14. So, here we have .. A hole dug in preparation to construct the bio-centre’s waste digester in Mukuru.
15. Looking more like an examination of something that landed from outerspace … members of Mukuru Environmental Project working on the final touches of the bio centre’s methane-collection dome.
16. And here we are at the ground floor. As we’ve already seen the completed bio-centre, let’s move on to see what people have to say about its impact on their lives, as we see members of Mukuru environmental project take a photo at the site of the construction site.
17. “ Our path ways will no longer be littered with human waste, we will now have a nearby toilet for everyone including the children and women who experience problems especially at night when they can't walk to the toilets that are far away. In addition, we can have our community meetings in the meeting room.” Isaak Odera, 38 years, resident of Mukuru.
18. “ This is an innovative and practical initiative geared towards improving water and sanitation conditions within the informal settlements, giving alternative green and clean energy sources, as well as addressing social-economic needs of the people, an example of a best practice.’’ Paul Muchire, Project Officer, Umande Trust.
19. The last word goes to seven year old Mirium, who’s happy that some of the gender-based issues faced by women and girls in Nairobi’s slums, are being addressed. “ I am always afraid to walk a long distance to the toilet, but now we will have one nearby and am happy with that. We will also have water so I don’t have to walk far away when my mum sends me” Mirium Mweni, 7 yrs, student at Gatoto Primary School, Mukuru.
