PUT ME IN COACH
OBJECTIVES
At the end of this session you will be able to:
 Distinguish between the basic differences of a few coaching models
 Recognize the names of two bodies that certify life coaches
 Explain the focus of life coaching
 Recall some examples of common coaching topics
 List some of the benefits of coaching
SPORTS COACHING
 The word coaching is often times related to sports, with good reason
• Successful sports coaches help to develop athletes into top performing players
• Sports coaches teach and reinforce skills that endure long into the future
 Coaching techniques and approaches vary
• Mike Rice of Rutgers is well known for his use of embarrassment and humiliation as teaching tools
• Michael Phelps‘s coach leveraged Michael’s strengths, and used routine, and visioning techniques to
achieve record breaking results.*
*Summarized from The Power of Habit: Why we do what we do in Life and Business (2014), written by Charles Duhigg.
“Phelps finished a career that spanned five Olympics with 28 medals, 23 of them gold.” Source:

Situational Leadership® II Four Basic Leadership Styles - Source: Blanchard, K., & Zigarmi, P. (1985). Leadership and the
one minute manager: Increasing effectiveness through situational leadership. New York: Morrow.
Style 1: DIRECTING (Autocractic)
THE LEADER PROVIDES SPECIFIC DIRECTION AND CLOSELY MONITORS TASK ACCOMPLISHMENT.
Behaviors: Structure, Organize, Teach, and Supervise
Style 2: COACHING
THE LEADER CONTINUES TO DIRECT AND CLOSELY MONITOR TASK ACCOMPLISHMENT, BUT
ALSO EXPLAINS DECISIONS, SOLICITS SUCCESTIONS, AND SUPPORTS PROGRESS.
Combines both direction and support
Style 3: SUPPORTING
THE LEADER FACILITATES AND SUPPORTS PEOPLE’S EFFORTS TOWARD TASK ACCOMPLISHMENT
AND SHARES RESPONSIBILITY FOR DECISION-MAKING WITH THEM.
Behaviors: Praise, Listen, Ask, Explain, and Facilitate
Style 4: DELEGATING
THE LEADERS TURNS OVER RESPONSIBILITY FOR DECISION-MAKING AND PROBLEM-SOLVING
TO PEOPLE.
In leadership
models, including
Ken Blanchard’s,
coaching is
considered a
leadership style
that is more
supportive than
directive.
This style can be
employed in the
workplace as a
tool for
supervisors.
COACHING AS A LEADERSHIP STYLE
EXECUTIVE COACHING
 An executive coach often incorporates
consulting and mentoring skills into their
sessions
 The executive may seek out one-on-one
coaching as an individual
• Motivation often includes a desire for personal
transformation, to explore challenges, and
improve performance
 The coach may be hired by their company
• Focus is defined by the company (i.e., leadership
development or deficiency)
• Status updates are provided to the company
• Beneficiaries are often senior leaders only
Consultant
• Noun
• A person who
provides
expert advise
Mentor
• Verb
• To advise or
train

you can, begin it. Boldness has
genius, power, and magic in it.”

LIFE COACHING MODEL
 The client has all of the power in the
relationship
 The coach leverages core competencies,
skills, and techniques like powerful
questions, design thinking, and affirmative
inquiry to co-actively work with the client to
achieve lasting and repeatable results
 The client is responsible to take the steps
necessary to move forward
“Coaching is partnering with clients
in a thought-provoking and creative
process that inspires them to
maximize their personal and
professional potential.”
- International Coaching Federation
LIFE COACH
CERTIFYING BODIES
International Coaching Federation (ICF)
• ICF offers the only globally recognized,
independent credentialing program for
coach practitioners
• ICF Credentials are awarded to
professional coaches who have met
stringent education and experience
requirements and have demonstrated a
thorough understanding of the coaching
competencies that set the standard in the
profession www.coachfederation.org
Center for Credentialing and Education
(CCE)
• CCE is an affiliate of the National Board
for Certified Counselors (NBCC)
• CCE offers a dynamic portfolio of
services including six volunteer
credentials, assessments and examination
services and customized solutions through
our business support and licensure
services
www.cce-global.org
LIFE COACHING EXPERTISE
 Anyone can call themselves a coach
 Similar to working with a doctor or general contractor it is wise to check credentials
before hiring a coach
 ICF coaches start as generalists (life coaches), may leverage their expertise and
continue their training into a specialty area (i.e., wellness or executive coaching),
and are life long learners in order to maintain their credential
 BCC coaches are academics at all levels that have completed additional training to
bridge a gap between the learning obtained for their degree and the criterion for
becoming certified by the board

BENEFITS OF COACHING
Benefits of coaching include:
 Increased self-awareness
 Enduring behavioral change
 Achievement of goals
IN SUMMARY
 Each coaching model has a slightly different focus area
1. Sports coaching focuses on the development of team work, skills, and a winning team.
2. Executive Coaching focuses on the needs and performance of a business and/or the
performance of a leader.
3. Life coaching focuses is on an individual’s growth and personal development.
a) The client has the answers.
b) The coach co-actively works with the client to achieve the client’s desired results.
 There are two life coaching certifying bodies, one of which requires more coach
specific training and testing (ICF), but many coaches forgo certification all together
 In all models, coaching topics vary depending on the needs of the client
 Benefits are impactful and far reaching
