Pearson are developing a new tech award for 2017.
Designed for pre-16 learners to study whilst at
school alongside other level 2 qualifications.
No ‘drop down’ level 1 option.
New BTEC Level 2
It will be designed to fully meet performance
measures.
Focus on motivational and engaging tasks for
students to enable informed progression to:
•post-16 learning
•NQF BTEC Level 3 Sport and Sport and Exercise
Sciences qualifications
Approaches to Assessment
• Majority of the qualification will be internally
assessed.
• External assessment is going to be more
vocational – task based approach.

• We are in discussions with DfE and other
stakeholders about the most appropriate grading
system.

Sport and Active Leisure
Re-accredited until 2018.
Available in 3 sizes – Award, Certificate

  • 18. New BTEC Level 2 Pearson are developing a new tech award for 2017. Designed for pre-16 learners to study whilst at school alongside other level 2 qualifications. No ‘drop down’ level 1 option.
  • 19. New BTEC Level 2 It will be designed to fully meet performance measures. Focus on motivational and engaging tasks for students to enable informed progression to: •post-16 learning •NQF BTEC Level 3 Sport and Sport and Exercise Sciences qualifications
  • 20. Approaches to Assessment • Majority of the qualification will be internally assessed. • External assessment is going to be more vocational – task based approach. New BTEC Level 2
  • 21. Grading • We are in discussions with DfE and other stakeholders about the most appropriate grading system. New BTEC Level 2
  • 22. Current QCF BTEC Level 1 in Sport and Active Leisure Re-accredited until 2018. Available in 3 sizes – Award, Certificate and Diploma. All internal assessment.
  • 23. New BTEC Level 1 in Sport Start Sept 2016. Graded – Pass, Merit and Distinction. Progression on to level 2 BTECs Skills focussed in a broad sense to include sector, functional Maths and English and transferable pre-employment softer skills.
  • 24. New BTEC Level 1 in Sport Qualification is made up of • Personal Skills • Sector Skills
  • 25. New BTEC Level 1 in Sport Certificate 180 GLH 2 Sector Skills 3 Personal Skills Diploma 360 GLH 4 Sector Skills 6 Personal Skills

  • 27. Current NQF BTEC Level 2 Due for re-accreditation in 2017. Uncertain if this will continue alongside new level 2 developments.

  1. Jim Then hand over to the 3 AO who will take you through their specifications – order NCFE, OCR then Pearson. 10 mins each AO, then they will be sat at a table and delegates can choose an AO (or multiples) to find out more about the specification and network with colleagues.

  3. Cambridge Nationals are vocational qualifications suitable for 14-16 year olds and are ideal for offering a broad and balanced curriculum to your students. The aim of our session is to provide you with a brief outline of the qualification structure and it’s assessment methods. And demonstrate how innovative practice of your vocational sports programme can support yours students learning of English and maths.
  4. OCR offers two Cambridge Nationals for sport: Sport Science Sport Studies Both qualifications are available at Level 1 and Level 2; and in two different sizes: Award = 60 GLH Certificate = 120 GLH Delivered over two years at KS4. Progress 8 DfE KS4 Performance points 120 GLH = equivalent size to 1 x GCSE

  7. OCR provides post 16 progression for your sports students. The Cambridge Technicals were launched in September 2012 as a replacement for OCR Nationals. Due to the DfE’s vocational reform we have now redeveloped to meet their requirements. The 2012 suite is still available; but the new Cambridge Technical in Sport and Physical Activity is available for first teaching September 2016. We’ve designed the Sport and Physical Activity suite to meet the very specific needs of the sector – and the requirements that today’s universities and employers are demanding.   8. We know the arrival of Progress 8 is starting to impact curriculum time for sport and PE. Although up until the end of KS4 PE is still part of the national curriculum, time devoted to the subject is being squeezed as other subjects – particularly English and maths take priority. Using sport as a catalyst for whole school improvement is not a new initiative. Since the arrival of Sports Colleges in the early 2000’s - sport has been used to raise attainment, engage students at risk, improve motivation levels, teach generic transferable skills, and mentor gifted and talented students. So I hope we’re preaching to the converted!
  9. We know that in 2014: 27% of students did not achieve an A to C in GCSE English; and 31% did not achieve an A to C in GCSE maths. We also know it’s difficult to engage learners in English and maths at post-16 unless they feel it is going to be relevant to their lives. Therefore, achieving A-C GCSE while in KS 4 is not only beneficial to school attainment targets – but massively important for the success of a students progression at post 16. Data from 2014 also shows that for post 16 students re-sitting English or maths they’re not meeting the required standard. Of those re-sitting - 38% achieved GCSE English; and 39 % achieved GCSE maths. Ofqual have stated that ‘competence and confidence in these subjects are the passport to good quality employment’. So we’re looking into how can embedding English and maths within Cambridge Nationals in Sport can help improve students success.
