This document discusses holding a comic con event at two Connecticut libraries, the Avon Library and Ridgefield Library. It provides details on the populations and budgets of the two libraries. It then discusses why the libraries would want to host a comic con, how to get started planning one, and potential funding sources for the first few years of the events. The document also covers promotion strategies and logistical details to consider when planning a comic con at a public library.

Editor's Notes
Introduce ourselves one by one. Say what our fandoms are
Ask for audience composition: how many ref/youth/teen librarians? How many directors?
Ask how many people know what a ComicCon is? How many people have attended a Con?
You are at a Con right now! And by watching this presentation, you’ll find out what a con is.
Just so you know who we are…
Avon and Ridgefield are not that different.
Avon: story of attended NYCC and planning their own con on the train; Gnovel collections
Ridgefield: GERI SRP theme Superheroes, needed an all ages event, we held it on July 25, 2015.
JOHN we are in the midst of a superhero boom (TV and movies), the Library administration was hoping an event like this would broaden the public’s perception of us, we are not just books and shushing bunheads.
ANN we are all different kinds of nerds, and an event like this means we might get to see some people at the Library whom we don’t usually see at the Library.
Avon: started with the space we had, then imagined what events we could hold where.
Ridgefield: JOHN they put the three biggest nerds on staff in charge, we dreamt big, but had no money, so kept it real
Avon: partnered & forged connections with the Boy Scouts, got advertising into the elementary schools
Ridgefield:
GERI partnered & forged connections with NCL, Lion’s Heart, town businesses, Ridgefield Music Arts Center, and SRP volunteers
ANN Need support from the staff and administration. PLAN EARLY (we started in April for a July event), especially if you want speakers, get staff buy-in – we had many, many staff members work that day – even if they were not scheduled!
JOHN We partnered & forged a connection with Avon Library! They helped us with T-shirts, answered questions, offered support and decorations.
GERI This is a giving profession – ask around for help! You never know who will offer to help you.
How can your library spend time & money on such a thing?
Avon: Glenn says yes to everything! So we came up with a plan
Ridgefield: GERI Assistant Director wanted an all-ages program! It’s her fault!
Funding – how do we pay for all this?
Avon: Year One, regular program money, $1,200. Year two: grants, $10,000
Ridgefield:
JOHN Year one, Friends of the Ridgefield Library, $2,800 plus generous donations. Year two: fundraising: Hard Drive SMASH $960 so far
ANN Set up for the first year may be high, getting things you can use over & over decorations, t shirts.
1500 presenters, 700 t shirts, 500 decorations & face paint & green screen
Use your resources – we did a lot of DIY, photocopies and kids crafts supplies
Avon: elementary school advertising, Boy Scouts
Ridgefield:
JOHN town businesses, flyers to Comic Shops, ad in paper, cardboard cutouts around building
ANN We made a video, put it on the website & social media; also tell patrons ahead of time that this will NOT be a normal day
GERI MOOC meet up, The Rise of Superheroes and Their Impact on Pop Culture, Smithsonian course, presented by EdX, 5 weeks, weekly leading to the con; got the usual library patrons introduced to this unusual library program; free to do - just time
ANN: scavenger hunt, parades with no weapons policy for cosplay, crafts, drawing program, face painting, hang with Batman & Captain America & Spider-Man & Peggy Carter
JOHN: programs on lower level (presenters, gallery show, drawing duels) and lobby (raffle, door prizes, greeting photos)
GERI: upper level (green screen photos, 3D printing Iron Man, Hoopla demos, brackets, 3D animation demo, RMAC music)
JOHN: we floated around whole building troubleshooting, Batgirl social media reporter
Avon: food ended too soon, costume contest was hard, not enough center floor activities
Ridgefield:
GERI presenter cancelled last minute, lack of Stormtroopers
ANN craft supplies not available due to national demand,
JOHN we were run ragged, Nutmeg Festival same day; You may attract a unique audience who are not the usual library patrons. Just say no to each other!
Play Avon Con video

Avon: all ages programming, keep momentum going, creation of Fandom Club
stats from both years, compare & contrast
Ridgefield:
JOHN try & see attitude for first year; create RidgeCon branding for 2nd year, 2015 stats (500 people), it was our highest attended single day event in Ridgefield Library historyANN reading the interest level of our community – broadening things this year to include other fandoms (Downton Abbey)
GERI circulation boost, new demographics attracted, legitimization of graphic novels
