This document outlines key factors to consider when evaluating a potential business opportunity:
- The product idea should address a market need and take advantage of technological or market discontinuities. Execution is more important than being first.
- The market size and growth rate should be sufficiently large. Barriers to entry like intellectual property protection, network effects, and business model innovation must be considered.
- The founding team must have relevant experience and the ability to recruit talent. Sufficient capital is needed but excessive funding can be risky.
- The economic model, risks, and business plan must demonstrate a viable path to profitability and returns for investors. Bootstrapping may work if the market is small with no dominant competitors

I’ve been in the software consulting and staffing business for many years, and have had my share of experiences with facing and overcoming the tribulations that come with running one’s own business. A lot of my experiences are specific to the technology business, but most of that experience applies to any form of consulting. At least half of your success as a consultant depends on your grasp and application of basic business knowledge and I am happy to share that with people.

Symantec announced the findings of a landmark study it commissioned from Forrester Consulting, which reveals that the leaders of small businesses launched during the Great Recession are dramatically different than those who launched their company prior to 2008. The recent recession put millions of people out of work or threatened their employment. It also ravaged the home equity and retirement accounts of countless recently retired professionals, leaving them to wonder whether they walked out of their previous employer through a one-way door to financial ruin. These unprecedented economic shockwaves spawned a new breed of entrepreneur: the accidental entrepreneur-- defined as a company founder who started his or her small businesses out of pure necessity rather than a lifelong dream of “being their own boss.” These accidental entrepreneurs are agile, highly educated, tech-savvy and battle-tested business professionals and the companies they founded and will found are born to grow.

The document debunks the myth that CIOs of SMBs are the primary decision makers for IT purchases. It summarizes that:
1) Most SMBs have fewer than 1,000 employees and lack dedicated CIO roles. IT decisions are made by generalists and staff within small IT departments.
2) Understanding the scale and needs of SMB segments (1-10 employees, 10-250, 250-500, 501-1000) is important for targeting marketing correctly.
3) Influencing IT staff who provide recommendations to management is key, as they can prevent vendors from reaching actual decision makers. Focusing solely on CIOs risks missing the majority of SMB opportunities.

Why CEOs don't get Technology, CIO conferencePeter Cosgrove
The document discusses challenges in the relationship between CEOs and CTOs/CIOs. It notes that only 30% of CTOs reported directly to CEOs in 2012, down from 40% in 2009. CEOs want a "one throat to choke" approach and prefer discussing tech trends rather than IT projects and costs. They also want CTOs to have a new set of skills around bringing in revenue and negotiating deals. The document advocates for CTOs to improve how they market and represent their teams, get IT professionals more visible in the business, and focus on talent strategies and hiring practices.

Application Security on a Dime: A Practical Guide to Using Functional Open So...POSSCON
This document discusses application security testing techniques and tools that can be used on a limited budget. It recommends establishing security governance through policies, standards and guidelines to provide structure for a security program. It introduces the Open Web Application Security Project (OWASP) as an open source community and lists some of their key resources like the Open Software Assurance Maturity Model (OpenSAMM) for evaluating security practices, and tools like AntiSamy and CSRFGuard for protecting against common vulnerabilities. The document advocates threat modeling to identify risks and provides examples of tools for static analysis and dynamic testing of applications to identify security issues before attackers.
Google Summer of Code is a program that provides stipends for university students to write code for open source software projects over the summer. The goals are to get more developers involved in open source projects, provide experience for students, and generate new code. Students work with mentors on proposed projects from March to August, completing evaluations along the way for payment. Over 10 years it has involved thousands of students from around the world who collectively wrote an estimated 50 million lines of code.
The document provides an introduction to AngularJS, including what it is, why it should be used, and how to get started. AngularJS is a JavaScript framework that uses two-way data binding and HTML templates to build applications. It simplifies code, promotes DRY principles, and is easy to test and integrate with other libraries. Getting started involves downloading AngularJS, adding the script to an HTML file, and then exploring core concepts like data binding, templates, controllers, services, and directives.
This document provides an introduction to Docker presented by Tibor Vass, a core maintainer on Docker Engine. It outlines challenges with traditional application deployment and argues that Docker addresses these by providing lightweight containers that package code and dependencies. The key Docker concepts of images, containers, builds and Compose are introduced. Images are read-only templates for containers which sandbox applications. Builds describe how to assemble images with Dockerfiles. Compose allows defining multi-container applications. The document concludes by describing how Docker improves the deployment workflow by allowing testing and deployment of the same images across environments.
Software Freedom Licensing: What You Must KnowPOSSCON
This document summarizes a presentation about software freedom licensing. It discusses how licenses are necessary to grant users rights to software under copyright law. Free software licenses, like the ISC license, grant users the four essential freedoms - to use, modify, copy and share software. Copyleft licenses, like the GPL, require that modified versions also be shared under the same license terms. The presentation explores how licenses implement policy goals and compares different licenses and their requirements.
In the realm of cybersecurity, offensive security practices act as a critical shield. By simulating real-world attacks in a controlled environment, these techniques expose vulnerabilities before malicious actors can exploit them. This proactive approach allows manufacturers to identify and fix weaknesses, significantly enhancing system security.
This presentation delves into the development of a system designed to mimic Galileo's Open Service signal using software-defined radio (SDR) technology. We'll begin with a foundational overview of both Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) and the intricacies of digital signal processing.
The presentation culminates in a live demonstration. We'll showcase the manipulation of Galileo's Open Service pilot signal, simulating an attack on various software and hardware systems. This practical demonstration serves to highlight the potential consequences of unaddressed vulnerabilities, emphasizing the importance of offensive security practices in safeguarding critical infrastructure.
Introduction of Cybersecurity with OSS at Code Europe 2024Hiroshi SHIBATA
I develop the Ruby programming language, RubyGems, and Bundler, which are package managers for Ruby. Today, I will introduce how to enhance the security of your application using open-source software (OSS) examples from Ruby and RubyGems.
The first topic is CVE (Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures). I have published CVEs many times. But what exactly is a CVE? I'll provide a basic understanding of CVEs and explain how to detect and handle vulnerabilities in OSS.
Next, let's discuss package managers. Package managers play a critical role in the OSS ecosystem. I'll explain how to manage library dependencies in your application.
I'll share insights into how the Ruby and RubyGems core team works to keep our ecosystem safe. By the end of this talk, you'll have a better understanding of how to safeguard your code.

[OReilly Superstream] Occupy the Space: A grassroots guide to engineering (an...Jason Yip
The typical problem in product engineering is not bad strategy, so much as “no strategy”. This leads to confusion, lack of motivation, and incoherent action. The next time you look for a strategy and find an empty space, instead of waiting for it to be filled, I will show you how to fill it in yourself. If you’re wrong, it forces a correction. If you’re right, it helps create focus. I’ll share how I’ve approached this in the past, both what works and lessons for what didn’t work so well.
"$10 thousand per minute of downtime: architecture, queues, streaming and fin...Fwdays
Direct losses from downtime in 1 minute = $5-$10 thousand dollars. Reputation is priceless.
As part of the talk, we will consider the architectural strategies necessary for the development of highly loaded fintech solutions. We will focus on using queues and streaming to efficiently work and manage large amounts of data in real-time and to minimize latency.
We will focus special attention on the architectural patterns used in the design of the fintech system, microservices and event-driven architecture, which ensure scalability, fault tolerance, and consistency of the entire system.
Dandelion Hashtable: beyond billion requests per second on a commodity serverAntonios Katsarakis
This slide deck presents DLHT, a concurrent in-memory hashtable. Despite efforts to optimize hashtables, that go as far as sacrificing core functionality, state-of-the-art designs still incur multiple memory accesses per request and block request processing in three cases. First, most hashtables block while waiting for data to be retrieved from memory. Second, open-addressing designs, which represent the current state-of-the-art, either cannot free index slots on deletes or must block all requests to do so. Third, index resizes block every request until all objects are copied to the new index. Defying folklore wisdom, DLHT forgoes open-addressing and adopts a fully-featured and memory-aware closed-addressing design based on bounded cache-line-chaining. This design offers lock-free index operations and deletes that free slots instantly, (2) completes most requests with a single memory access, (3) utilizes software prefetching to hide memory latencies, and (4) employs a novel non-blocking and parallel resizing. In a commodity server and a memory-resident workload, DLHT surpasses 1.6B requests per second and provides 3.5x (12x) the throughput of the state-of-the-art closed-addressing (open-addressing) resizable hashtable on Gets (Deletes).

Power Grid Model
The global energy transition is placing new and unprecedented demands on Distribution System Operators (DSOs). Alongside upgrades to grid capacity, processes such as digitization, capacity optimization, and congestion management are becoming vital for delivering reliable services.
Power Grid Model is an open source project from Linux Foundation Energy and provides a calculation engine that is increasingly essential for DSOs. It offers a standards-based foundation enabling real-time power systems analysis, simulations of electrical power grids, and sophisticated what-if analysis. In addition, it enables in-depth studies and analysis of the electrical power grid’s behavior and performance. This comprehensive model incorporates essential factors such as power generation capacity, electrical losses, voltage levels, power flows, and system stability.
Power Grid Model is currently being applied in a wide variety of use cases, including grid planning, expansion, reliability, and congestion studies. It can also help in analyzing the impact of renewable energy integration, assessing the effects of disturbances or faults, and developing strategies for grid control and optimization.
What to expect
For the upcoming meetup we are organizing, we have an exciting lineup of activities planned:
-Insightful presentations covering two practical applications of the Power Grid Model.
-An update on the latest advancements in Power Grid -Model technology during the first and second quarters of 2024.

Which ones?
●
Predictability
No nasty surprises, please.
●
Minimal downtime
A little is OK, though. Especially if it's scheduled.
●
Rapid recovery
An emergency on your part does not constitute an
unscheduled employee holiday on my part!
