- 2. Introduction
- 3. What is a Jack and Slide: • AKA Jack and Roll • Jack object up • Insert slide mechanism under • Move to desired location
- 4. When to use the Jack and Slide Method: • Obstruction prevents object from being lifted with a crane • Object is enclosed in a structure • Moving an object under obstacles • More economical
- 5. Examples of Jack and Slide: • Moving machinery inside buildings • Sliding loads under piperacks or other obstructions • Sliding loads off railcars/trucks • Moving objects from congested areas
- 6. Every jack and slide job is different: • Hours of engineering and planning • Require creativity and ingenuity • How to get J&S equipment to worksite
- 7. Jacking
- 8. Jacking Process: • Goal = jack object to needed height to insert slide system • Stair step • Use cribbing • Crisscross cribbing for stability
- 9. Types of Cribbing: • Variety of different thicknesses • Plywood • 4x4 ; 8x8 ; 12x12 • Small steel plates – distribute load on cribbing • Manageable to be carried by hand • High capacity Ekki Wood Timbers
- 10. • Need a device to facilitate the jacking portion • Need a power source (hydraulic) Enerpac Jacks have multiple styles and models to accommodate jacking needs
- 11. Toe Jacks: • Get under low equipment • 1” minimum ground clearance • Lifting points on both the toe and top
- 12. Gantry System: • Pick objects off SPMT or foundation • Set onto slide system
- 13. Sliding

- 15. When choosing what slide system to use, consider this: • Confines of the jobsite • Weight of object being moved • Ground conditions • Directions of travel
- 16. Air Bags / Air Castors
- 17. Air bags / Air Castors: • Used for light load inside shops • Takes only one or two people to move loads • Multi directional • Floats on thin layer of air
- 18. Limits: • Light capacity • Levelness: ¼” over 10’ • Flatness: ¼” over 10’ • Smoothness: Machined concrete floor or vinyl tile • 30 to 40 psi • Needs high volume of air • Consult operator manual for air requirements vs. weight of load
- 20. Rollers
- 21. Rotating Caster Skates: • Low capacity • Multi directional • Urethane roller = no floor damage
- 22. • Hilman Rollers are typically use for heavy loads/heavy duty applications • Roller selection depends on application & job site conditions • High capacity rollers are more cumbersome to maneuver
- 23. When using rollers: • Always be sure to have a hold back system in place • Use wedges in front of roller travel direction as another safety precaution • Always make sure ground/structural steel can support loads • Always choose the points on the load that will give the best distribution (corners) • Align rollers parallel • Avoid metal to metal on top of roller (wood/pad)

- 25. Basics of a Skid System: • Skid track • Skid shoe • Hydraulic cylinder
- 26. • Teflon wear pads • Overcome frictional force • Saddle pockets if needed
- 27. • Jack up object • Lay foundation for skid track • Lay skid track • Insert skid shoes/cylinders • Hook up power pack • Lower object onto skid shoes • Start skidding process • Always keep a point of contact as for safety
- 29. Case Study #1 Compressor Jack & Slide
- 30. Scope of Work: • Jack compressor skid up on trailer • Insert channel iron and roller under load • Skid to foundation and lower
- 31. Jacking the skid up on the trailer and inserting channel iron and rollers
- 32. • Used squat cans to bridge the gap between truck and support steel • Wedges used as safety stop for roller
- 33. • Come along to facilitate the slide • Special jacking lugs were fabricated to fit on lifting lugs of skid to use as jack points • Lower skid onto foundation

- 35. Case Study #2 Flue Gas Cooler Elevated Jack & Slide
- 36. Scope of work: • Jack and slide Flue Gas Cooler out of an elevated structure • Remove with crane • Insert new one back in place
- 37. • Assembled gantry system • Fabricated and attached jacking lugs • Jack cooler to required height to insert ramp and rollers
- 38. • Slide ramp under cooler • Pre welded channel iron and snatch block
- 39. • Crane hoisted to facilitate slide • Used wedges as safety stops
- 40. • Removed old cooler • Inserted new one
- 41. Tips
- 42. • Inspect equipment before each use • Always be sure to have a hold back system in place • If using rollers, wedges work well for stopping loads • Always make sure ground/structural steel can support loads • Slow and Steady wins the race! • Jacking lugs can be fabricated if there are no jacking points • Want slide to be as level and smooth as possible • Channel iron/I-Beams work well with rollers • If using air castors, seal cracks in floor with tape (refrigerator tape). Also, lay vinyl over ridges for smooth transitions • Lubricate skid track • Creativity and Ingenuity are key on Jack and Slide projects • When you think you have enough cribbing, better grab some more.
