This is a presentation of the European Environment Agency's 'Environmental indicator report 2013'. The report explores the implications of a transition to a green economy, focusing on the interaction of resource consumption, environmental trends and human well-being. The report aims to support implementation of the European Union’s 7th Environmental Action Programme (7th EAP), which sets the long-term objectives of environmental policymaking in the EU.
Green Infrastructure (GI) facilities have capacity to enhance health and mitigate Environmental Sustainability Challenges (ESC). However, the extent of the mitigation and health benefits is unclear in developing countries. This study examined the impact of GI on ESC and Perceived Health (PH) of urban residents in Lagos Metropolis, Nigeria. Multi-stage sampling technique was used to select 1858 residents of Lagos Metropolis who completed semi-structured questionnaires. Descriptive statistics and chi-square test were used to explore data distributions and assess association of the availability of GI with resident’s PH and ESC. Odds ratio with 95% confidence interval (OR;95%CI) were estimated for good health and ESC mitigation. Participants were mostly men (58.9%) and younger than 50 years old (86.3%). Good health (20.5%) and high mitigation of ESC (collection and disposal of waste-52.7% and official development assistance-63.9%) were reported where GI is mostly available. Participants were more likely to report good health (OR:1.40; 95%CI:1.02-1.92) and high mitigation of ESC [water quality (OR:1.42; 95%CI:1.12-1.81) passenger transport mode (OR:1.41; 95%CI:1.06-1.89)] where GI are mostly available. Availability of Green infrastructure is supporting health and mitigating environmental sustainability challenges in the study area. Green infrastructure should be provided in urban areas where environmental sustainability is under threat.

Three major problems associated with our management of the world's ecosystems are already causing significant harm to some people, particularly the poor, and unless addressed will substantially diminish the long term benefits we obtain from ecosystems First, approximately 60 15 out of 24 of the ecosystem services examined during the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment are being degraded or used unsustainably, including fresh water, capture fisheries, air and water purification, and the regulation of regional and local climate, natural hazards, and pests. The full costs of the loss and degradation of these ecosystem services are difficult to measure, but the available evidence demonstrates that they are substantial and growing. Many ecosystem services have been degraded as a consequence of actions taken to increase the supply of other services, such as food. These trade offs often shift the costs of degradation from one group of people to another or defer costs to future generations. Second, there is established but incomplete evidence that changes being made in ecosystems are increasing the likelihood of nonlinear changes in ecosystems including accelerating, abrupt, and potentially irreversible changes that have important consequences for human well being. Energy and water are central to sustainable development and poverty reduction efforts globally. They affect all aspects of development, whether social, economic, or environmental. Sustainable energy and water are core business in meeting the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in most developing countries. The eight goals that comprise the MDGs build on agreements made at United Nations conferences during the 1990s.1 They represent commitments by countries around the World to reduce poverty and hunger, and to tackle ill-health, gender inequality, lack of education, lack of access to clean water and environmental degradation.

Africa has significant natural wealth but its greatest asset is its largely youthful population. The population of Africa is fast expanding and the youth continue to face a multitude of challenges, including unemployment and environmental degradation.
Unemployment is particularly challenging and in the next few years there will be many
young job seekers. This can only serve to exacerbate poverty, and the ripple effects of
youth unemployment in Africa are already resulting in social unrest and unsafe migration even as they threaten global peace and security. The other pertinent issue
across Africa today is how much the continent should invest in environmental
sustainability, being that the region contributes very little to the burning challenges of
global warming and environmental degradation, while it suffers the most in terms of
health, economic, geographical and social consequences. Water pollution, air pollution,
and droughts are the continent’s most serious environmental issues, all of which have
very strong negative effects on the health of Africans.
In order to mitigate both unemployment and environmental degradation, there is a need
for new development models that can drive youth job creation while drastically reducing
environmental risks and ecological scarcities. The green economy offers a world of
business and job opportunities. However, many of these avenues remain unknown and
therefore untapped in this part of the world. An inclusive green economy is a pathway
towards eradicating poverty, achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development
and safeguarding the ecological thresholds which underpin human health, well-being,
and development.
Waste Or Create Hub has developed a new strategy, Environmental Workforce For
Africa. This 5-year strategy breaks down how we intend to enable the youth to the work
opportunities that abound in the green economy and provide skills training that will
equip the workforce to take up challenges and innovate with the knowledge acquired,
thereby providing a sustainable and viable means of livelihood that the youth can
embrace. The strategy gives the youth the opportunity to become young environmental
sustainability professionals and the enabling environment to develop their experience in
the green economy space with adequate tools, knowledge, and resources. This strategy

adapt to the dynamics in the industry. The strategy gives individuals, private and public
stakeholders, global communities, donors and partners, the opportunity to see the need

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. A Global Scorecard for the Environment
While the world faces enormous environmental challenges, the story
is a lot more nuanced than headlines might suggest. The
Environmental Performance Index tracks the performance of 178
countries on environmental issues ranging from air and water quality,
to fisheries and forests, to human health, to climate change, painting
a picture of disappointment side-by-side with hope.

2. The EPI provides a stocktaking of what is working in international
environmental governance and what isn’t. Among the nine categories it
measures, about a half show no or negative progress. Environmental
issues directly tied to public health, like access to water and sanitation
and child mortality, tend to show the most hopeful signs.

5. Air Pollution
China and India often get a lot of attention for their bad air
quality, and rightly so. Cities in those countries have levels of
harmful particulate matter way beyond healthy levels. Air
quality in emerging nations is particularly bad, with industry the
main cause.
In India alone, premature deaths from outdoor air pollution
increased from 100,000 to 600,000 between 2000 and 2010.

Brazil is often cited as a main culprit of
deforestation in the Amazon. However
new satellite data confirms that Brazil
actually gained forest cover in the
decade from 2000-2010. While experts
cast some doubt on this data’s ability to
differentiate between old growth forest,
sustainable reforestation, and
monoculture or plantation forests, this
seemed to be a good sign—until
Brazilian deforestation rates shot up in
2013 by almost 30%.
8. Critical Habitat Protection
Critical Habitat is under threat worldwide.
Only 33% of terrestrial ecoregions, 13% of
marine ecoregions, and 22% of expertdefined sites reach targets for protection. Of
all countries in the 2014 EPI, only Peru
demonstrated improvement in protecting its
critical habitat.

10. Access to Sanitation and
Drinking Water
In Afghanistan the percentage of households with access to
clean drinking water went from 5% in 1991 to 61% in 2011.
Since 1990, more than
have gained access
to improved drinking water and proper sanitation, exceeding
Millennium Development Goal targets and improving global
well-being. Health-related goals have been realized thanks to
clear targets and policies.

clear targets matter
and are deeply connected.
The EPI helps policymakers take stock of the world’s
environment. Improvements this year give it the
greatest coverage yet: 178 countries, 99% of the
world’s population, 98% of its landmass, 97% of its
GDP.
