A Friendly Localized Platform for Multilingual Semantic Communication

Institute of Information Systems (HES-SO)

The new economy and the globalization trends have brought new needs for increasing international business communication and cooperation. However, it is often difficult to discover relevant information across languages and cultures in conventional information management system. In this study, we have proposed a multilingual semantic communication for automated information management through a user-friendly localized system. The theoretical model is made of a multilingual ontology based on linguistic knowledge from Wikipedia in order to provide a powerful search engine and suggestion system. Our current solution includes English, French and Chinese.

The presentation describes the eLanguage Project, an effort by the Linguistic Society of America (LSA) to advance open access publishing electronic of academic papers in linguistics. The presentation was held on 5 November 2007 at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany. It compares eLanguage and the World Atlas of Language Structures (WALS), an extremely successful resource in language typology that has been developed at the Institute.

Poster: Using Open Source Tools to Improve Access to Oral History Collections

Presented at the Library Technology Conference 2011 in St. Paul, MN. Program Description: Oral history collections provide a wealth of information, yet current practices in metadata creation and access limit the amount of information within the interview transcripts that can be discovered. This poster describes the Miami University Libraries current project of using Open Source Software in creating enhanced access to our Oral History collection. The Oral History Project at Miami University contains over 100 interviews pertaining to experiences at the University, with transcripts for over half of the interviews. The poster will describe the process of batch processing transcripts using OpenCalais, a web service that automates the creation of metadata for content using natural language processing and machine learning, and displaying both the transcripts and metadata in the content management system Drupal using various modules. We will discuss the results from the comparison of machine generated and human generated metadata in this project and the benefits and concerns surrounding both methods. Future project developments will also be included.

The modern library web environment consists of multiple content sources and applications that perform essential functions that often overlap and could potentially create a fractured user experience. For example, content in a library’s Drupal website may be replicated in LibGuides or WordPress blogs. Search functionality in a discovery platform may be replicated in a federated search tool or the ILS OPAC. This presentation provides tips, tackles technical and political challenges to building a single web experience for users, discusses solutions and use of APIs (application programming interfaces), provides concrete examples, and more.

Creating an optimal travel plan is not an easy task, particularly for people with mobility disabilities, for whom even simple trips, such as eating out in a restaurant, can be extremely difficult. Many of their travel plans need to be made days or even months in advance, including the route and time of day to travel. These plans must take into account ways in which to navigate the area, as well as the most suitable means of transportation. In response to these challenges, this study was designed to develop a solution that used linked data technologies in the domains of tourism services and e-governance to build a smart city application for wheelchair accessibility. This smart phone application provides useful travel information to enable those with mobility disabilities to travel more easily.

Après une courte introduction qui va présenter une définition de leadership stratégique, cet atelier va se baser, comme fil rouge, sur les 10 principes communément admis du leadership stratégique (suite à une large étude de PWC). Pour chacun de ces principes, nous allons interagir avec les participant-e-s tant des comportements à (haute) valeur ajoutée que ceux plutôt toxiques ; puis débattre autour des indicateurs de mesures possibles (ou déjà expérimentés par les participants) L’objectif principal est que chaque participant-e s’interroge sur son leadership stratégique et la valeur amenée dans l’entreprise/organisation et qu’il-elle soit parfois défié par le regard d’autres participant-e-s.

A 3-D Riesz-Covariance Texture Model for the Prediction of Nodule Recurrence ...

We propose a novel imaging biomarker of lung cancer relapse from 3-D texture analysis of CT images. Three-dimensional morphological nodular tissue properties are described in terms of 3-D Riesz-wavelets. The responses of the latter are aggregated within nodular regions by means of feature covariances, which leverage rich intra- and inter-variations of the feature space dimensions. The obtained Riesz-covariance descriptors lie on a manifold governed by Riemannian geometry requiring specific geodesic metrics to locally approximate scalar products. The latter are used to construct a kernel for support vector machines (SVM). The effectiveness of the presented models is evaluated on a dataset of 92 patients with non-small cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC) and cancer recurrence information. Disease recurrence within a timeframe of 12 months could be predicted with an accuracy above 80, and highlighted the importance of covariance-based texture aggregation. At the end of the talk, computer tools will be presented to easily extract 3D radiomics quantitative features from PET-CT images.

How to detect soft falls on devices

At the Knime Berlin summit 2016, Prof. Dr. Dominique Genoud presented a novel way to implement a KNIME workflow that perform machine learning and signal processing on an Android platform. The use case was to detect soft falls (not from a standing position) using an Android watch. This application has a big impact on how we can detect automatically when elderly people fall from their bed of their chair. This work was originally based on the Master Thesis in Business Administration realized by Vincent Cuendet in 2015 at the HES-SO with the help of the FST (Fédération Suisse pour les Téléthèses), an organization that helps disabled and elderly people to keep their autonomy.

FUNDAMENTALS OF TEXTURE PROCESSING FOR BIOMEDICAL IMAGE ANALYSIS

Presented by Adrien Depeursinge, PhD, at MICCAI 2015 Tutorial on Biomedical Texture Analysis (BTA), Munich, Oct 5 2015. Texture-based imaging biomarkers complement focal, invasive biopsy based biomarkers by providing information on tissue structure over broad regions, non-invasively, and repeatedly across multiple time points. Texture has been used to predict patient survival, tissue function, disease subtypes and genomics (imagenomics and radiogenomics). Nevertheless, several challenges remain, such as: the lack of an appropriate framework for multi-scale, multi-spectral analysis in 2D and 3D; localization uncertainty of texture operators; validation; and, translation to routine clinical applications.

Mocodis is a web application facilitating the transfer of skills between senior and junior associates. It can be used in companies, institutions to capitalize on the experience of older employees, or can be used to train employees top down. Mocodis automatically generates dynamic micro-courses combining text, audio and video resources, and uses an algorithm to analyze user satisfaction to produce better courses at the next request.

This paper aims at reporting on the findings of two quantitative studies and one qualitative study conducted among HES-SO undergraduate and graduate students. We have outlined the characteristics of the “digital natives” generation of students attending our courses and have submitted a sample of these students to an experiment using the Google Glass, in order to assess whether the use of this new device could meet the students’ expectations for accessing enriched learning resources. This paper also presents some thoughts for consideration regarding future research to be lead in the field of innovative technologies and learning processes

DESIGN & DEVELOPMENT Multilingual database •  Wikipedia Database: multilingual, web-based, freely available knowledge –  Java-based Wikipedia Library (JWPL) –  Extracting lexical semantic knowledge from Wikipedia –  21 Millions articles, 280 languages –  Three different types of information : •  Synonyms, •  Hyponyms ("type-of"), •  Meronyms ("part-of")
