Joint initiatives are in both of our nations’ enlightened self interest – from immediate and sustained economic and environmental gains to long-term well being and prosperity of our peoples – and will make a major, essential contribution to finding global solutions to the devastating risks facing hu- manity and the biosphere.
‘Scenarios for Policy: Transforming Farming, Landscape and Food Systems for the 21st Century’ was a side event held at the Hunger for Action Conference: 2nd Global Conference on Agriculture, Food Security and Climate Change. This session, coordinated by the CGIAR Research Program on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS) considered future policy options for the major transformative changes needed in farming, landscapes and food systems to make climate-smart agriculture a reality.

Environmental Impacts of Animal Agriculture - Part 2Paul Mahony
This article compares the "per hectare" performance of an animal-based food product
(beef) with four plant-based products (soy, wheat, rice and potatoes) in terms of: (a) nutrition levels;
(b) greenhouse gas emissions; and (c) water usage.
A comparison on a “per hectare” basis is necessary if we are to consider the amount of land used
to produce different food products, with impacts on the natural environment, including forests.
Some key observations are:
1. The greenhouse gas emissions and water usage of beef are extremely high relative to its
nutritional value per hectare, particularly in the context of results for plant-based food
products.
2. All the plant-based foods included in the report provide more protein, energy, iron, zinc,
omega-3 and calcium per hectare than beef.
