4. Why?
– In Creative Industries:
disruptive application or combination of existing technologies or
concepts
>> interface between ICT, “content” and creativity – “the digital
domain”
>> need for trained professionals
>> need for critical deepening of the body of knowledge

5. How?
– Humanities ahead > PhD in the Arts
– “File” with three components:
1. innovative design, product or service >> model, protototype,
design sketches, or any other suitable form
2. reflection about the search for suitable techniques, methods
and materials; justification of the chosen combination; “lessons
learned” >> essay
3. Possibilities to realise and/or exploit the product etc. >>
market analysis, businessplan, user appreciation

6. What?
– Pilot Call for proposals for three PhD projects
– Candidates will be employees of a university
– Full time (4 years) or 80% (5 years)
– Standard PhD tariff (50.000 € per year ~ 2.000 € per month)
– 50.000 € for materials, travel, hiring of external expertise
– Assessment by a mixed Dutch/international panel
(Nigten, Raaijmakers, Stikker)

7. When?
– Publishing call for proposals: “around the summer” (of 2011 ☺)
– Two months later: deadline for preproposals
– Next step: selection of max 6 candidates for workshop
– 6 weeks after workshop: full proposal
– Assessment committee interviews each of the candidates
– Ranking advice; NWO Council for Physical Sciences decides (appr.
Six months after deadline preproposals).
– Projects with their “own” money can enter the assessment
procedure >> quality check + to be part of the network
