Sterilization involves removing all microorganisms including bacteria, spores, fungi, parasites and viruses. It can be achieved through physical methods like heat, radiation, and filtration or chemical methods. Heat sterilization involves dry heat using an oven or hot air, or moist heat using steam or boiling. Moist heat above 100°C in an autoclave is the most effective at sterilizing. Filtration removes microbes from fluids using small pore filters. Chemical disinfection reduces microorganisms using agents like phenols, alcohols and dyes but does not destroy all microbes like spores.
