The digital identity landscape in Europe is a patchwork of solutions with various levels of maturity across countries. Most current solutions are provided by governments for public use, while private initiatives are growing but not widely adopted. There are three main trends in the digital identity market: 1) Banks are increasingly providing identity services using existing Know Your Customer processes to verify identities; 2) Growing eGovernment services are driving demand for digital identity solutions; 3) A variety of initiatives are being launched calling for interoperability between solutions.

The market for Identity Solutions is at various stages of maturity per country, ranging from most mature with a government provided identity solution that can and is used in the private sector for authentication to least mature in a market without government/national identity solution and lacking private initiatives that are mature enough to provide a viable alternative.

The market need is growing and driving services, a patchwork of solutions is created. Interoperability will be essential to success, and is partially driven by (EU) regulation (eIDASregulation, Stork initiative). For any given solution the strength of the solution and it’s reach will be elementary for its success.

3.A patchwork of initiatives for digital identity solutions and identity service providers and brokers drives the need for interoperability, both technically and on a business level.
Initiatives include existing parties expanding to identity solutions (e.g. ATOS, Salesforce), technology providers moving upstream (e.g. Vasco, Ping), and new entrants with a pure identity service provider focus (e.g. Signicat).
