The automotive
● It wasn't until the 1900s that
automobiles were considered a
strong alternative to the horse.
● As transportation technology
increased, so did the
vocabulary.
The automotive
Invented was ...
words for parts of the car:
● dashboards
● radiators
● speedometers
words for the type of car:
● saloon
● limousine
● motor bicycles
words for the roads:
● loop roads
● flyovers
● bypasses
Aircraft
● In 1903 the Wright brothers
(Orville and Wilbur) built the
first successful airplane known
as the Wright Flyer I.
● When the Wright brothers’
plane took to the sky more
terminology needed to be
assembled quickly.
Aircraft
Many words originated from the French:
● aeroplane
● fuselage
● aileron
● pilot
Most of the words we still use today, however
there are some that we don't:
● aerial liner
● aeroplanist
● hydroaeroplane
The South African (Boer) War
● The war was between the
British Empire and the South
Africans.
● It was because of the discovery
of gold in the Boer territory
having much more value than
the diamonds.
● The South Africans put tax on
the gold and dynamite which
ignited the war.
● The war ended in 1902 with the
Treaty of Vereeniging.
The South African (Boer) War
Many terms that were used in WW1 made their
debut in this war. Words such as:
● Dug-out
● Tin hat
● No man’s land
● Firing squad
● surprise attack
Most were compound words, using two existing
words to create a new meaning. There was
some words that changed meaning due to the
war:
● Gas was resembled as a weapon rather
than a state of matter
● Bomb was used as a verb
Cinema
● The first public cinema was
built in 1895
● It wasn't until the 20th century
that the film industry became
serious.
Cinema
They watched films in:
● Cinema theatres
● Picture palaces
● Nickelodeons- this has narrowed into
a TV channel
All these words are recognisable but we
wouldn't use any as compound words as seen
above.
● Bioscopic-simply means a film, didn't
last long except in South Africa
● The term kinemacolor also stopped in
1914. It was the process of watching a
black and white film in colour through
coloured filters
