Adverts
Adverts have changed much
since the 1930’s. Nowadays we
aren’t even allowed to advertise
cigarettes due to the health
issues. In the 1930’s, they
believed they were good for you!
Coined Words
The Great Depression saw words such as:
-Hyperinflation (inflation of a very high rate)
-Skidrow (a run-down part of town)
-Hoovervilles (US term meaning a town built by the
unemployed)
-Reflation (reducing taxes to increase money supply)
-Roosevelt's “New Deal” policy (included short-term
work programmes and changing the interest rates)
Coined Words
Words coined from WWII as well as other military
terms. A lot more German words were now being
coined for obvious reasons:
-Brownshirts (a member of the Nazi Malitia)
-Swastikas (the logo or motif of the Nazi’s)
-Gestapo (Germany’s secret police)
-Nazi (a follower of the German movement led by Hitler)
-Fuhrer (a German title meaning leader)
-Air-raid (attack of bombs from aircrafts)
- Civil defense (training of civilians for battle)
World War II
World War II was the most influential part of the
1930’s. 60 Million people died and the world was left
to repair itself. Civilians were taught to fight on the
expecting that Germany would invade. That day
never came but the memories and the new coined
words stayed.
