George "Geordie" Nigel Douglas-Hamilton was born into an aristocratic Scottish family and was educated at prestigious schools in Britain and Europe. During World War II, he served in the Royal Air Force as Fighter Command's chief intelligence officer and received several honors for his service. After the war, Douglas-Hamilton held several ministerial positions in the British government and served as the UK High Commissioner for Singapore from 1959-1963. He succeeded his father as the 10th Earl of Selkirk in 1940 and had a long and distinguished career in public service.
